Dr. @gavinyamey.bsky.social & I highlight the serious risks of the U.S. withdrawing from the WHO,both for American & global health security. When the WHO is supported, the world benefits. In the face of rising infectious & chronic disease threats, we need solidarity, not isolation. #GlobalSolidarity

In a new peer-reviewed article in @nejm.org, @boghuma.bsky.social & I discuss the public health implications of Trump withdrawing the U.S. from the WHO & pausing the future transfer of U.S. funding to the organization www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

don't forget the race science

Donald Trump fired the people who make sure you and your parents get the health care you need. The people who make sure medical devices are safe for you to use. The people who approve the lifesaving drugs you rely on. How does this help working people?

DOGE team now firing the people who cut the checks to make sure your Medicare and Obamacare is current www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

“I never thought antivaxx policies would be put first in MY state,” sobs man who single-handedly cleared the way for antivaxxers to dictate health policy for the entire country

🎺 Sunday evening listening Might be my favorite Jon Hassell album—ethereal, looping, layered, floating, dubby, jazzy, searching soundscapes Streams at jonhassell.bandcamp.com/album/listen...

As a long-time critic of medical misinformation, I have often gotten push back for taking on fringe targets: supplement peddlers like Dr. Oz or anti-vaxxers like RFK Jr. Why not focus on the people in power, I was told? Sadly, now I am.

RFK Jr—extreme anti-vaccine activist—is doing exactly what he planned to do. His supporters knew this was his plan.

Decimating cancer research: the nation’s health is going exactly according to RFK Jr’s plan. He promised to “disrupt” health/health research—slashing cancer research is certainly highly “disruptive” Patients who were about to be enrolled in trials were told they no longer could enroll—such cruelty

The nation's health under RFK Jr, going exactly according to his plan.....

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

Just as we had dashboards to track the Covid pandemic, we need a tracker to document the mounting devastation by Trump, Musk, RFK and the MAGA gang They have sparked a global crisis

Your moment of zen From his astounding 1965 debut on Blue Note The story behind the recording is a wild, wild ride (jazztimes.com/features/col...) youtu.be/KFFs9XsZKvw?...

America, this is your new reality under HHS Secretary RFK Jr

So the US is now kidnapping whole families and trafficking them to random countries that the US has coerced into imprisoning them for some unspecified period of time

I reflect on the apocalyptic impact of Trump’s policies on global health, while also striking a note of optimism on how the “story” of global health is one of progress even in the face of setbacks

It’s ironic that the people most interested in finding someone to blame for COVID are now trying so hard to make the next pandemic their own fault…

Yup

RFK Jr wasted no time in bringing a wrecking ball to US public health & health research, just as everyone knew he would

Marco Rubio wrote these words on World AIDS Day 2017: www.foxnews.com/opinion/sen-... How does a man go from being a very staunch defender of PEPFAR to being the guy who gleefully blows PEPFAR up & nonchalantly watches people being denied their HIV medicines & transmission rates spike?

Doing the unthinkable: The deep cuts to the #CDC's workforce today are expected to decimate the Epidemic Intelligence Service, a program that has trained public health rapid responders for decades. Envy of the world. Poof! www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

The cruelty and callousness of what the US government is doing here, the pain it is inflicting, the waste of time and energy and taxpayer money, the risks it is creating are just staggering… #IDsky 🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

I do not know how it is that I had never heard this until today—but wow am I glad that it came into my life It’s the greatest track I have listened to in a very, very, very long time Recorded when she returned to South Africa from exile (she fled after Sharpeville) youtu.be/mTprM49tLUA?...

One example (of thousands) where EIS was invaluable: 2023, a rare fungal outbreak at a paper mill infected workers CDC EIS helped trace the source, stop the outbreak, and informed future prevention efforts Now multiply that by 100+ responses every year #PublicHealth 🔗 www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes...

Half of EIS, the CDC's renowned "disease detectives," gone. These folks respond to emergencies in the US and around the globe, and are now in tatters.

If this reporting stands up (and it appears confirmed by multiple sources): devastating. The EIS is the front-line SWAT team of disease detection in the US and globally, and also the training ground for new generations of public health workers. No EIS, no boots on the ground for outbreaks. ->

Established in 1951, the EIS fellowship program is for our nation’s best and brightest. Abruptly firing these dedicated fellows is unconscionable, ghoulish, dangerous. I’m furious. www.cdc.gov/eis/php/abou...

Make no mistake. This is an all-out attack on health in America. Not only is the EIS vital to controlling infectious disease; it was where a remarkably high fraction of our public health leaders received formative training and experience. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

Yes, now is the time 👇👇👇

reads like something out of a Soviet textbook...

In this tumultuous, perilous moment, here is some unalloyed joy At the age of 100, on Valentine’s Day, Marshall Allen has released his debut solo album, and it is enchanting and achingly beautiful Neneh Cherry on guest vocals Music as a healing force marshallallen.bandcamp.com/album/new-dawn

Yes it is. We start each class by examining Trump’s policies & their impacts on US & global health—the situation is rather apocalyptic I do say to my students, with optimism, that the history of global health is one of progress even in the face of setbacks & headwinds (this is one GIANT headwind)

An absolutely scorching OpEd by Harold Varmus, Nobel laureate, on Trump's destruction of the vaunted US scientific & biomedical enterprise & on Trump's kooky picks to lead the US health & science agencies Gift link to share far & wide www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.

Wow This is an extraordinarily dangerous and self-defeating act The CDC’s EIS officers are some of the world’s best respected & trained experts in investigating & controlling outbreaks (they’re nicknamed the “disease detectives”)

The New York Times is out there claiming how 'sexy' it is to be a Republican right now, while Trump unleashes pain, suffering, and death

With RFK Jr saying he wants to stop NIH doing infectious disease research “for 8 years” and Trump now slashing the NIH and CDC workforce, what exactly is the plan for tackling the H5N1 bird flu outbreak?

NEW: Medications for HIV treatment and prevention were supposed to resume around the globe. But they haven't, multiple sources told me. Not only are there basically no employees left to carry out USAID projects -- the waiver itself was extremely limited. www.npr.org/sections/goa...

“The rebellion at Stonewall would not have happened without trans people. To attempt to erase their existence is utterly shameful.”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s beliefs are "hardly a laughing matter," the epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves writes. Now that Kennedy has been confirmed as health secretary, "I am afraid for our country because I know what happens when science denialism comes into power."
