For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

RFK Jr. thinks that a clinical trial should be done for the entire childhood vaccine schedule. Here’s why that will never happen. 1. You can’t do a randomized trial of something that we already know is safe and effective. There would have to be a placebo group that didn’t get vaxxed. Unethical.

Simply awful... the National Parks system is one of America's greatest treasures. www.sfgate.com/california-p...

I'm going to stick with Apple Maps #gulfofmexico

My Macross: Do You Remember Love? physical media collection gained a new member this week. Now I have VHS (purchased back in the 80s!), LaserDisc, DVD, and Blu-ray HD/UHD. Also happy to finally have official subtitles in the new Blu-ray release.

Make it make sense. Cutting staff just to cut them is not efficient. I guess it's an attempt to clean house but the Salt Typhoon investigation was still in ongoing. Without a review & clean handover, the progress made could be lost. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

No lie!!! Snoop Dogg, Nelly, and other black performers at Trump’s inauguration dishonor the black community.

College was a special time because of all the big Star Trek events and changes: I said farewell to the TOS crew, hello to Deep Space 9, a brief goodbye to TNG before it made its big screen appearance in Generations, and then a big welcome to Voyager. A lot of good memories over those 4 years.

NEW: My staff just got ahold of this memo from House Budget Committee Republicans. It's lengthy and hard to digest but it tells us exactly how Republicans plan to sell out the American people for another round of tax cuts to the rich. We're breaking down the highlights as we go:

Good evening! Share a comic you feel nostalgic about! ❤️ My first Spider-Man comic book...

So much California and fire response misinformation being promoted. I've given up on directly commenting on posts by friends and family and instead try to share factually-based information when I can.

At CES 2000, I worked on part of a Home Audio Video Interopability demo. My piece didn't get shown but I was in the audience recording the presentation. It's an interesting look at the 1394/FireWire connected world that Sony and other consumer electronics companies thought might be the future.

Between Christmas and New Year's, I did some clean up on LEGO sets that had been disassembled but not put away for a long time. A few pieces are still missing. Besides the Friends Downtown Flower & Design Stores and the Friendship House, I also worked on a Camper Van and UniKitty set.

Finishing up 2024 by picking up the latest issue of the series that got me regularly going back to my local comic book shops: Ultimate Spider-Man. Happy New Year!

Lower Decks ended as it was from the start: a love letter to and celebration of all things Star Trek. I know many are hoping for more but I feel fully satisfied with the 5 season we got. Seems almost unbelievable to have gotten 50 eps. of near perfection!

This is a great short animation: Star Trek the 80's Anime. And I'm totally here for the Gundam inspired fight moves!

In Star Wars there's theory on fungible currencies being taught in schools and I'm sure a lot of big money movement electronically but in the end everyone just wants and uses cold, hard cash for personal transactions. #SkeletonCrew

Had dinner at Kizuki Ramen & Izakaya at the Tacoma Mall. They're having an Attack on Titan promotion including food combos with collectibles like cups, keychain & cards. Other merch is also available too. It was fun having the anime's theming around in the restaurant and the food was good too.

Star Trek 3.5 was a favorite game of mine as a kid. It was written in BASIC and was an early experience in me trying to understand code someone else wrote. I made some mostly cosmetic mods to it but it was still exciting to me. It too me a while to find and repurchase this copy a few years ago.

In college, my friends and I saw Star Trek: Generations. Being the nerds we were talked about how the Stellar Cartography room would work. The processing and display tech seemed out of reach. Add 30 years and we've got the Las Vegas Sphere. Science fiction continues to become regular science!

My final Venture Bros. Shirt Club order arrived. I ordered on the last day of the sale so it took about 2 months for fulfillment. I decided to go with shirt themes I already had: getting 4 Hanks to go with Dean! & adding 3rd OSI shirt. Go Team Venture! ✌️✌️

Sony Aibo robots were one of the few tech gadgets I wanted but could not justify spending the money on. They were really cute and sophisticated for the time. Interestingly the original models ran a Sony proprietary RTOS called Aperios which came from a research project.

Got my invite code to here on Friday and I was so excited I took another 2 days to sign up. I think not going to Twitter everyday broke my need for these kinds of social apps. It will probably be along time before I build another, similarly curated list of people I'm following... if ever
