Is there an underpinning constitutional theory guiding the Trump administration? Some suggest that this is the case. MICHAEL MEYER-RESENDE (@meyer-resende.bsky.social), however, is skeptical and argues: a power grab is not a constitutional theory. verfassungsblog.de/a-power-grab...

Straight from the authoritarian playbook: Trump weaponizes the DoJ against the prosecutor who investigated (one of) his crimes AND goes after the law firm that would allow the prosecutor in question to defend himself in court.

Herein lies a big difference between Brazil, where the rule of law still exists, and the US, where the Roberts Court decided to officially shred it. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

Good. 👇

NEW: The Washington Post has pulled out of an agreement to run an ad in its newspaper criticising Elon Musk. This is despite signing an agreement to publish it. Democracy dies in darkness. Here is the ad. Let’s share it far and wide! Screw the Post.

Vance’s speech is a shame. The “most fundamental values of democracy do NOT include endorsing the storming of parliament when losing elections, as his boss organised. Welcome to the 1930s, only worse— at least back then the US was, or rather ended up, on the right side.

This.

Yes, Macron's warning was *five years ago*. What makes us think that now EU leaders will wake up to the new geopolitical reality? If anything, the EU is more divided today than it was then.

Quote of the day: “The road to the authoritarian state is lined with people who advise you not to exaggerate”

How the far-right normalization proceeds on the international scene. Note Orban's choice of words, identical to Elon Musk's. Far-right AfD is ‘future’ of Germany, says Hungary’s Viktor Orbán www.ft.com/content/e3d9... via @ft

Your regular reminder that the single greatest threat to transatlantic democracy, security, & prosperity is neither 🇷🇺, nor 🇨🇳, nor any other external threat, but rather the authoritarian calls coming from inside the house

Straight from the authoritarian playbook— make no mistakes: this is not about having a discussion about the appropriate limits of judicial power. It is about executive aggrandizement against *any* limits to its power imposed by independent courts.

Every professor should join the AAUP right now if you haven't. www.aaup.org Also join your local campus workers union, or any other union relevant to your work (they do different things!). If the government won't protect us, and our administrations won't protect us, we need to protect each other.

One year ago, large demonstrations against the AfD led to a dip in the polls for the party, which unfortunately proved to be temporary. More sustained mobilization underscores that the AfD is not a normal party and supports its political isolation.

A delightful man. I am very sorry to hear this news.

Five years on: stuck. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog on how the latest news (the 'wobble', PEM, AI, regulatory capacity, Trump etc.) shows there's still no post-Brexit strategy & perhaps none is possible - but UK is still not ready to admit it: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2025/01/five...

What exactly is oligarchy? And which anti-oligarchic measures have proven effective in the past? New Guardian column.

Courage. 👏👏👏

Et voila'. Bardella signals his alignment with Elon Musk by pretending that he is fighting for free expression (he isn't) and the 🇪🇺 wants to limit free expression (it doesn't). The DSA only limits the way algorithms can boost somebody like Bardella because he kisses up to Musk. x.com/j_bardella/s...

Welcome to 2025. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. A look at how the year has started both quietly and noisily in terms of Brexit-related news, how that's the shape of things to come, and how to stay sane: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2025/01/welc...

…or with the EU.

Europe unites to demand Commission enforce the DSA

Elon Musk is trying his best to empower puppet governments in🇪🇺 countries. And he might just succeed, given that there are elections in February in 🇩🇪, there may be elections in🇫🇷 next fall, and that the 🇪🇺 commission is doing nothing. Time to wake up and enforce the EU DSA, which can protect elections.

🚨🚨 "Kemi Badenoch’s Refusal to Distance Herself From Elon Musk is an Act of Moral Cowardice". I wish to tread carefully on UK politics, but this absolutely spot-on assessment by @adambienkov.bsky.social of Badenoch's "Musk-appeasing" actions. @bylinetimes.bsky.social. bylinetimes.com/2025/01/06/k...

Yes. The sooner, the better.

"Acknowledging the threat that Trump poses to American democracy does not require accepting that he is unbound by law. On the contrary, taking the risk seriously requires taking seriously the legal and political mechanisms available to prevent the worst of Trump’s intended abuses."

Thanks to the Republican Congress, and a tsunami of lies from Musk and others, the only US agency dedicated to tracking and exposing Russian and Chinese propaganda around the world ceases to exist www.france24.com/en/live-news...

Breaking News: Jimmy Carter has died at 100. A one-term president and peacemaker from Georgia’s farmland, he was beset by crises in office. nyti.ms/49WdF3G

Point is not that every move by aspiring autocrats is tactical or strategic genius. Important not to fall into the trap of "authoritarian inflation," i.e. overestimate these figures. Point is that much of our political language obscures agency altogether.

Norms don't just "erode;" democracies don't just "slide." It's conscious destruction and direction. Actors have agency. Which means: One can hold particular people accountable. "Processes," not so much.

This platforming now gets justified as necessitated by "journalism." Journalism would have been to ask questions, press for answers, etc.

My thoughts on how Trump is following the Orban playbook . .. and I'm honored to be on the Background Briefing with Brooke Harrington who knows everything there is to know about plutocrats! (Read her new book Offshore: Stealth Wealth and the New Colonialism. wwnorton.com/books/978132...)

MARIA SKÓRA (@mariaskora.bsky.social) examines the Polish government's efforts to restore the rule of law. At the same time the European Union must remain vigilant against trends of democratic backsliding in other member states. verfassungsblog.de/restoring-th... @democracyreporting.bsky.social

A reminder at a moment when many seem to sink into historical defeatism.
