There are two clear messages here: 1. A second Trump administration would be full-on fascist, and their team is not shy about saying as much. 2. There's a not insignificant number of Americans who support this fascism outright, and even more who merely shrug at it. www.nytimes.com/2023/11/11/u...

Australian race-baiting gutter journalism from Murdoch media. I often wonder what people whose careers have amounted to only this think of themselves and their place in this world. www.news.com.au/finance/real...

Responding to the growing controversy around protests planned for 11 November, the IHR's History and Policy publishes this important intervention by Adrian Gregory pointing to the complex and contested nature of Remembrance and its regular reinvention. www.historyandpolicy.org/opinion-arti...

Ransomware, AI, and social engineering all set to be 2024's biggest security threats

"... deliberate misinformation..." being disinformation. www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11...

Whilst I have some gripes with some elements of the China Project (which is normal, nobody agrees with everything - particularly when it is as complex and important as understanding China is), this is still sad and unfortunate news: #China thechinaproject.com/2023/11/06/s...

Just in case you feel that there is still a glimmer of hope for humanity, just read the public submissions for this bill. It'll sort you out 😉 www.parliament.act.gov.au/parliamentar...

What is the value of this for Kyiv? Why would they remove specialised forces from the front with Russia to hit mercs in another hemisphere that pose no immediate threat to Ukraine? Honest questions, I assume that there's a reason and I just don't know what it is. www.kyivpost.com/post/23722

Russia is deporting Ukrainian children from their home to "Russify" them. This is genocide. We still need about 6000 signatures to reach 50 000 - the quorum needed for the German Bundestag to discuss the petition. The organizers are in contact with the Bundestag to this end. Please sign & share!

Given some of the reporting of the last week, it’s clear that we’re in for another wave of discussion about whether Ukraine should be pushed to the negotiating table. A long🧵(also posted on the other site).

Government officials have drawn up deeply controversial proposals to broaden the definition of extremism to include anyone who “undermines” the country’s institutions and its values, according to documents seen by the Observer. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023...

Reposting for truth.

Exec: so what are the names of the gross pasty nerd billionaire and his weird girlfriend? Writer: Musk and Grime Exec: and the embezzler? Writer: Sam Bankman-Fraud Exec: and the politician and his son who do organized crime? Writer: Don and Don Junior Exec: get the fuck out of my office

It's interesting that when people predict the end of humanity via robots they imagine the robots being to blame and not the money obsessed billionaires behind them, racing to replace ineffective humans with AI and machines for maximum profit.

I never understand why people say "It lets you know that you're alive!". Do these people sometimes think that they are dead, or were never born in the first place? How does one get like that in life? Good lord, my stupid alarm clock reminds me of my own brutal existence at 6am every damned morning!

How do we secure the future of liberal democracies? In the new episode of #BerlinsideOut @AaronGBurnett & I spoke to Paul Mason Jessica Toale & Chris Alexander about how to defend our free societies from outside threats - & what we need to fix at home. berlinsideout.podigee.io/7-defending-...

UN experts call on the Taliban to free 2 women rights defenders from custody in Afghanistan

As protests for Palestine are demonised, banned in places protesters arrested & UK home secretary about to chair a Cobra meeting into "Increased risk of Terrorism" Am reminded of this from Hong Kong: “It’s you who taught me that peaceful protests are useless”. The right to protest must be defended

"Stop killing people" pretty much sums up my politics these days, whether we're talking genocide, covid, the environmental/healthcare/housing crisis, food insecurity, police brutality, lack of disability rights, attacks on LGBTQ+ folx, no access to reproductive medical care, etc etc etc. Just stop.

A multi-layered problem in the north of Australia. Some common threads are racism, alcohol and disadvantage. The big question is the accountability of the state when violence is done, ostensibly in their name. www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10...

what the hell did he know

Multiple things can be true at once: 1. Oct 7th was the worst collective trauma Jews have experienced in our lifetimes 2. The war on Gaza is a horror 3. Antisemitism is rising 4. Islamophobia is rising Those trying to use one of these to cancel others are making things worse

Republicans are going to use the war as a way to double down on targeting protestors and Muslims. And as MTG has shown, they’ll also be coming for progressive Jews. Very important we understand that this war is being used by fascists in Israel and here to secure power.

Things in Myanmar are unraveling fast: “All trade routes with China, including the busiest border in Muse, are now reportedly under Brotherhood Alliance control and currently closed due to ongoing fighting”

Great episode of my old pod with friend and former colleague Rory Medcalf speaking to Rowan Callick and Richard Maude about PM Alanese's visit to China. Quality, clear eyed thinking on the relationship with China from Australia's perspective. shows.acast.com/13de84ee-6f5...

Watching the pro-gun folk in the US do mental contortions and triple brain flips with a twist to justify the right to own firearms designed for armed combat is exhausting.

Totally does my head in that so many research and similar papers exist without any indication of the date of publication - especially those which reference a particular point in time. Why do we do this? Case in point: sea.org.pl/wp-content/u...
