How beautiful is this little carved peapod? Dating from around 1500, it shows 10 biblical scenes within the peas, including the Crucifixion, the Creation of Adam and Eve, the Nativity, and the Annunciation. It measures 10cm long and was made in North Germany. Held at the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin.

I absolutely adored finally speaking to Amy after years, and meeting Alix too - we had the most wonderful chat which took so many unexpected twists and turns. And what a fantastic summary of the podcast: "Expect folklore, faith, power, and the strange beauty of lives lived on the edge of history."

Not super historical, but I love them (and they're 19th century images so deff counts!) - been doing more decorating of our home today and after living here a few months I finally got my Mucha pieces up on my study wall. Now I get to look at these lovely ladies above my desk every day!

I've been super busy the past month doing loads of book talks & podcasts and it's been exhausting but so much fun!! Now that I have 3 books there's such a bank of stuff that I get to chat about, and it's equally fun revisiting old stuff as exploring the new. I still look at things fresh every time

A little bear to start your weekend off well 🐻 Made from amber, it dates to c2000 BC, and was found in a bog near Słupsk, Poland, in the late 19th century. Measuring 10.2x4.2x3.5cm, it has little legs, ears and facial features. The bear is considered exceptional for its soft carving & its elegance.

🌟New post!🌟 Today I'm excited to be sharing my review of the upcoming "Lionessheart" by Catherine Hanley, a stunning biography of a little-known medieval royal woman who led an incredible life 📚

Another fab podcast I was on recently! Carol Ann always has such great insight

Marking to read later!! Female scribes feature in my latest book, Women in the Middle Ages, (including the lovely Guda in the preview image) and their work was so important. Their surviving manuscripts are great ways to trace their often unrecognised contribution and also find named individuals 📚

Had so much fun chatting with @ifitaintbaroquepod.bsky.social again! Always one of my favourite podcasts ☺️

Went to the Renaissance exhibition at the King's Gallery at Buckingham Palace today, and had a wonderful time. Some stunning works, including a fantastic wealth of da Vinci.

🌟New post!🌟 Today on the blog I'm exploring the wonderful Liber Manualis, an instruction book written by a 9th-century Frankish noblewoman for her eldest son. It is an incredible artefact, especially for hearing about Dhuoda's life and thoughts from her own pen. justhistoryposts.com/2025/02/24/h...

Today I learned that hobby horses date to at least the 1630s. What a great painting!

I love the exquisite detail in this carved cello made in Parma in 1691. It was made by a well-known carver and musician named Domenico Galli for Duke Francesco II d'Este. The duke had learnt violin as a child and had a love for music, being a generous patron of musicians in his lifetime 🧵

Being Valentine's Day, I had to share the wonder of Victorian Cobweb Valentine's cards. Created by carefully cutting paper, an image on the top could be lifted up to reveal another image or hidden message below, seen through a 'cobweb' concertina. 👇 John Johnson Collection, Bodleian Library

73 years ago today, George VI died making his daughter Queen Elizabeth II. She was Britain’s longest-lived and longest-reigning monarch, and the longest serving female head of state in the world, but her life before becoming queen is not always as well known: justhistoryposts.com/2022/09/11/e...

Here's a little octopus to brighten your day. This mosaic was made between 101-300 AD and was discovered in Villaquejida, León, Spain. Originally part of a Roman villa, this fragment measures 50cm by 43.5cm. It is held today at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid.

My latest newsletter is up! This month I chat about my visit to the Mary Rose Museum, and catch up on some historical news, including digitisation, historic wills, and Viking hoards. Check it out! justhistoryposts.substack.com/p/new-year-n... #history

Giving a Zoom talk tomorrow about Royal Witches, so as it's been a while I thought I'd read through it this evening to refresh my mind. Finding myself getting engrossed by something I wrote, which is always a giddy feeling! Like, well done past me 😂
