They’re going to try and prosecute their political enemies

If you’ve been waiting for a five-alarm fire to raise your voice: it's here. Last night, the president signed executive order giving himself carte blanche to decide what actions are or are not legal. This is the story to focus on. Protest this executive order like democracy depends on it.

Now we find out whether democracy has died.

More brave

My devotion to @kairyssdal.bsky.social is for his moral and intellectual clarity and his bravery

@kairyssdal.bsky.social bravo on your statement about democracy and the rule of law on Marketplace this evening. I made my children listen to hear what bravery sounds like.

Read the human cost to our USAID diplomats of stranding them abroad.

Bwahahaha.

After judge shopping every issue from DACA to the Affordable Care Act to abortion—and being granted nationwide injunctions—the GOP is currently telling Trump to ignore the judiciary. Rule of law party, my ass.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Administrative Law is holding a hearing at 10 ET on “Reining in the Administrative State”: judiciary.house.gov/committee-ac... I’m the minority witness. My testimony offers some thoughts about reining in the *real* executive branch abuses we’re currently seeing.

Today, this bad Catholic is proud to be one

Go go USAID contractors!

The hopeful version: courts will slap Trump lawyers and administrators with contempt orders until they cry uncle. The realistic version: the administration will ignore the contempt orders.

We are in deep, deep trouble

We’ve had checks & balances & separation of powers embedded into the founding of our national govt specifically because the Framers anticipated that some day an executive might come along like Trump. For over 2 centuries we have also had judicial review. It’s all under siege now.

"One was fired by email at 12:47 am. Another wept with colleagues as security escorted her from the office. A third frantically tried to fill a prescription after she got a 24-hour notice that her health care was ending." Stories of the purged. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/09/u...

Ahem. See my bio: our hope for reproductive rights is advocating locally.

Maternal mortality is preventable through adequate and timely care. Letting women die due to pregnancy is therefore a political choice, and Sen. Cassidy has made his values and his racism clear.

Bondi's Justice Department looks poised to prosecute blue state doctors who mail abortion pills into red states, probably under the Comstock Act. She's also very likely to restrict access to medication abortion WITHIN blue states by declaring that *all* mailing of abortion pills is unlawful.

Postdocs around the country had their salaries frozen. They are leaving in droves, unable to pay rent, sharing announcements from other countries happy to take them. This will set the US back centuries (assuming the US survives).

Bravo, @normeisen.bsky.social!

Gross

I served as a USAID contractor on several public health projects in poor countries. The work was vital, and my colleagues were of the highest caliber.

Fun one from today that nobody seems to be clocking amidst all the more substantive chaos. The White House comms department is now declaring that Trump can now "sign [an] executive order into law" without a bill passing Congress. Have never seen this language from a prior White House.

Federal health workers are expressing fear and alarm after a website called “DEI Watch List” published the photos, names and public information of a number of workers across health agencies, describing them as “targets.”

I thought Musk et al were capitalists. Turns out, they’re nihilists

Donald just said, standing next to Netanyahu: "The US will take over the Gaza Strip ... we'll own it." Which is ludicrously insane. So he’s sending troops to the Middle East, to Gaza, is that right?

It is atrocious how our leaders are treating our USAID foreign service officers. abcnews.go.com/US/state-dep...
