What a state we’re in when most of the world is rooting for China over the U.S. in the trade war.

wow the three month orgy of breaking long-standing agreements, abrogating contracts and shredding the constitution has damaged the full faith and credit of the united states that the entire global financial system rests on? might've been a bigger deal that Tim Walz' national guard retirement idk

Hopefully we're now over the idea that Trump and Putin are seven-dimensional chess geniuses. They're chancers and opportunists. Putin royally miscalculated his invasion of Ukraine in 2022, losing almost a million soldiers KIA/WIA, and now Trump is causing trade carnage everywhere

*shrugs* why isn't yet obvious that the first part of any Trump retaliation strategy is to boost trade ties with everyone else since the clown show in DC is here to stay for a while

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

* I was born in LA when they were just *starting* to clean up air pollution * leaded gas was still in use * I would have died from pneumonia in childhood without antibiotics * acid rain and the ozone holes were major concerns we need to remember all these things

Hope the Trump era makes more people realise that whether people respect institutions and the rule of law is so much more important than standard ideological differences between left and right.

i am fascinated by the outright refusal of people in the professional political commentary class to just consider the possibility that there is no plan and that trump really is a braying idiot with the more acute case of narcissistic personality disorder on record

Canada picked a guy with a PhD in economics from Oxford. Mexico chose a woman with a degree in physics and a PhD in energy engineering. The U.S. handed the job to a carnival-barking senior citizen, with multiple felonies and six bankruptcies under his belt.

Pour François Bayrou, manifester contre une décision de justice n’est « ni sain ni souhaitable », à la veille du rassemblement du RN en soutien à Marine Le Pen

So technically there is no law that a sitting president can be criminally prosecuted, just a memo. That is the flimsiest excuse. Article 84 of the South Korean constitution “ The President shall not be charged with a criminal offense during his tenure of office except for insurrection or treason.”

Just to be clear, my view is that the technical (and economic) effects of Trump’s tariffs are less important than the fact that it’s going to be really hard for *anyone* to deny that the US government is now batshit.

The suffering that will be unleashed on Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos is horrific. And that's not because they have "raped" America. It's because they're poor, they can't afford many US goods but they can become wealthier by exporting to rich countries.

So Trump is gutting the tourism and flight industry in the U.S., tanking the economy, sparking a global recession and limiting international trade and production. Does he know that he is actually probably lowering co2 emissions and this could thus be viewed as an action to protect the climate?

Never has the meme of playing chess with a pigeon been more apt.

Hey, MAGA Americans ... the UK doesn't pay those tariffs, the EU doesn't pay those tariffs.... China does not pay those tariffs... Indonesia doesn't pay those tariffs YOU pay those tariffs. You just got taxed to within an inch of your lives.

Trump's surrender in Ukraine is about a million times worse than Biden leaving Afghanistan. NATO's stalwart 80-year stand all undone Our European allies stabbed in the back. A great Cold War victory, handed over to Putin. How terrible is that? Dishonorable, pathetic.

Trump and Putin are old men trying to make the world the way it used to be, because they don’t understand it the way it is.

Quick reminder: Le Pen wasn't found guilty because the French courts hate democracy. She was found guilty because she broke the fucking law. open.substack.com/pub/iandunt/...

I've written up more extensively some of my thoughts about the reaction to the Le Pen trial at the link below. Quick thread. 1/n benansell.substack.com/p/for-my-ene...

After 2 months of the current administration, it's clear Putin has no idea how to run the United States

Are we great again yet?
