The young vote in Germany, by gender. 😳

Fascinating chart showing how Die Linke - which used to have much support from older people in East Germany - has revitalised itself as a party of the (progressive) youth:

In Görlitz hat fast jeder Zweite AfD gewählt. Das Direktmandat geht erneut an AfD-Bundesvorsitzenden Tino Chrupalla, der 13% mehr als 2021 erreicht und auf 48,9% der Erststimmen kommt.

This is quite funny. In his district (which happens to be most of my family’s district), Lindner got fewer votes than the FDP.

AfD does less well with over 60s (born before 1965) though they are comparatively more conservative Argument to move on from holocaust education & to regard the Nazi era as a detail of German history has a lower ceiling among older voters. Nazi salutes from American allies of AfD may hinder too

"Es geht nur um Migration"...

The word 'basis', a borrowing from Ancient Greek, has the same Proto-Indo-European ancestor as Dutch 'komst' and German '-kunft' (arrival). This illustrates that related words don't have to look alike at all. Greek and the Germanic languages underwent very different sound changes. Click for more:

German election: The Left and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) are both projected to make significant gains in today’s election — in part due to support from young voters 👇 Follow along with our live blog for more analysis: www.politico.eu/article/germ...

Preliminary thoughts on the German election results so far: 1) Chasing the far right vote by demagoguing on migration has brought the CDU/CSU it's second worst performance in history. It's in first place, but it's a weaker result than anything Merkel posted.

German friends and colleagues: please vote today! 🗳️ 🇩🇪 Put at least as much thought into your decision as these architects did while designing ballot boxes / election urns for the Architekten-Verein, Berlin, back in November 1878. (via Architekturmuseum, TU Berlin) #BTW25 #BTW2025

When you learn a language, you’re also learning history, geography, religion, music, politics, sociology, sport, food and maths, amongst so many other things. Even if you’re not ‘into languages’, there will be something in any new language to interest you and broaden your mind.

@okwonga.bsky.social looks at the state of German politics as Germans are heading to the polls today, with Friedrich Merz, the likely new chancellor, seemingly taking “every available opportunity to alienate the same people he is trying to attract to his nation.” www.theguardian.com/world/commen...

As Germans head for the polls today, the stakes could not be higher for Germany‘s future and Europe. My in-depth analysis on Merz‘ huge mistakes, but also some hope that the centre will get its act together in light of what happened since Munich.

Why I voted today and think democracy is worth fighting for. This is my grand uncle Franz, born in 1911. Born into a German-Polish family he volunteered to spy for the Second Polish Republic on Nazi Germany in 1937, was caught in 1940 and executed by guillotine in 1942.

Die Linke long looked unlikely to make the Bundestag. Now it's surging prior to German elections. I wrote about the party's rebuild, unprecedented organizing campaign, and how its fate - and that of other smaller parties - could impact the next government:

The word 'sorry' is quite similar to 'sorrow', both in terms of form and meaning. However, 'sorry' and 'sorrow' aren't etymologically related in any way. 'Sorry' derives from 'sore'. It's related to Dutch 'zeer' (pain; painful). 'Sorrow', in turn, is related to 'zorg' (worry; care). Here's more:
