Thanks to these principled and brave federal workers who gave up their livelihoods rather than participate in the destruction of essential government services. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/02/25/n...

I’m old enough to remember what city air looked (and smelled) like before the Clean Air Act and its kin, but we’ve enjoyed the benefits for so long, it’s easy to take them for granted. But now we see, nothing is guaranteed—we’ll need to fight tooth and claw for our very right to breathe.

No time like the present.

We’ve descended to indiscriminately shackling parents in front of their children, stripping them of their papers so they have no identities or hope, and throwing them into jungle prisons to be forgotten — or to be sent on to their deaths. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

I figure we need more of this right now.

Why is it that tech, music, and teen publications — and comedians — are willing to say these things out loud while the great journalistic institutions cower more and more? www.theverge.com/politics/613...

An old truth, essential for this moment: “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

If you think the proposed cuts to American science are because science is unpopular, this are wrong. DON'T BELIEVE THEM. 1. 76% of Americans express trust in scientists, more than for police officers and school principals (Pew). 2. 80% say federal funding of science is vital to our nation (STAC)

When our days are filled with the haze of chaos and destruction, quiet moments are essential.

Following norms only makes sense if all parties are attempting to do so. That one side shows total disregard for the Constitution — much less mere rules and civility — makes it absolutely clear that the time for politeness is over. www.americaamerica.news/p/our-genera...

I, for one, do not welcome our new brobot overlords. open.substack.com/pub/anntelna...

maniacal activity + wanton destruction ≠ making people’s lives better

The pain of an early flight is sometimes rewarded.

ICE raids aren’t just about persecution of people of color, MAGA, and racism. As with everything in this administration, policy intersects with the bottom line—big money is flowing to private prison corporations and circling back as political contributions. www.instagram.com/reel/DFWMIhV...

Waking up to snow cover in Houston and the whole of the country flipped into a menacing new state, it feels very much like being in the upside-down.

As promised, that guy is doing something about crime on day 1 — by releasing violent convicted criminals from prison and trying to kick American babies out of the country.

Walking a path at dusk that reflects the moment’s grief and loss.

With each step, the crackle of icy snow, accompanied by the wind-creaking of the tall trees…

These are the hushed days in between…

Peace

Just in time for the solstice and the start of the holiday week… snowfall in Boston…

This is a preview of our nonsensical future, where public health agencies can’t promote public health and lifesaving vaccines are hidden away like an embarrassing secret. arstechnica.com/health/2024/...

Can never be too visible at night.

Why isn’t there a 24/7 White House war room coordinating urgent action to protect people and democracy from the upcoming depredation?

This rings true. Defending the status quo doesn’t work when the need for systemic change is obvious. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

I happened to see some of my photos of the Folk Collective at last month’s Scorpio house concert in JP, and it strikes me that songs of love and liberation are exactly what we need.

Gotta celebrate the wins.

Agreed. But I’d take it one level down—we need to rebuild and expand our sense of community and return to a more personal recognition of the people around us. It’s much more possible to fight for the people we don’t know if we can at least recognize their shared struggles among the people we do.

I love this letter (1970) from Charles Schulz to a 10-year-old boy who asked him "what makes a good citizen?" It's been making the rounds and I thought I'd share it here, too. In these difficult times, we have to hold one another more closely and fight harder for the world we want. Don't despair.

Here’s a legal question from someone with zero legal background: even if a president is protected from prosecution for illegal acts by the SCOTUS decision, isn’t anyone carrying out an illegal order still liable for the crime?

7-year-old me says a lot about who I’d later become. Between Star Trek (TOS) and the closing days of Apollo, I launched into a life intertwined with technology, space exploration, and thinking about the limits and possibilities of us humans—all with an underlying optimism about our shared future.

Swordplay is a great workout on an unseasonably warm and sunny afternoon — and it’s a powerful way to burn off some of the past week’s accumulated stresses.

These rough days call for more cuteness. Albert is on the job.

My older sister contracted polio as a kid before the vaccine was widely available — and she is still dealing with the medical consequences to this day.

Despite everything, autumn in Boston is still lovely.
