So glad I got to EP Neil Berkeley’s excellent doc on the inimitable Gilbert Gottfried, who would’ve been 70 today. Due to Gilbert’s penchant for comic irreverence, we kicked around calling the doc “Too Soon,” which turned out to be sadly prophetic.

20 yrs ago, Dr. Leo Spaceman was a joke. Today, he’d be appointed to a pivotal role overseeing public health.

Most fascinating tidbit so far: Sydney Pollack wanted Lorne to play Dustin Hoffman’s pal in Tootsie, the role that went to SNL’s Bill Murray.

Went to a documentary community hang, and I gotta say: anytime you’re not sure you’re ready to leave the house and be social in Los Angeles but you actually DO, you won’t regret it.

Today, we celebrate you, Josh! A special corner at the #SpiritAwards in loving memory of our late president, champion of independent filmmaking and donut enthusiast, Josh Welsh 🧡

Watched Moonstruck for the very first time tonight. In a world of cruelty and chaos, it was a respite of old world charm. Plus the Twin Towers.

Don’t sleep on Questlove’s Sly Stone documentary - now on Hulu, direct from Sundance. There’s a lotta noise out there but this one is tuneful and profound.

Every day I can’t help but think this all could have been avoided, we had lots of warning and a clear alternative, yet too many people who knew better had their heads up their asses. Every. Single. Day.

The problem with getting rid of incompetence is that you need actual competent people to do it

Today, they’d have already fired the guy whose job was to put up the sign.

As a contemporary of Mike White’s, part of White Lotus’ appeal for Gen X-ers is in blowing up a Love Boat / Fantasy Island paradigm with R-rated, premium, slightly John Waters / Jonathan Demme glory.

It may look like doomscrolling, but it’s actually hopescrolling, only the pickings are slim

It’s a bummer to read a long review of a doc series in a major mag that mentions none of the filmmakers whatsoever. Documentaries, they make themselves!

Lunchtime, which also means Onslaught of the For Your Consideration Eblasts

How long til the National Film Registry is only preserving Police Academy and Porky’s sequels?

Staying well-informed in the face of so much willful ignorance is a great way to feel dependably miserable.

Love Parker Posey but had NEVER seen Party Girl. Am remedying that tonight.

It’s one thing to stay informed, but why such glee and relish in amplifying posts, pics and videos of that which you claim to revile? Just stop.

I have a guitar and some books, what is this “superbowl” of which you speak?

Weird Al and Thomas Lennon discussing theater with Bert Kreischer is the podcast highlight of the week.

Nothing like a torrent of unhinged hatespeech to remind you why you left a social media platform.

So, terrible executive orders can happen quick and easy, but humanitarian, environment-saving, rights-preserving ones just weren’t possible?

Watch very carefully and see if you can spot my cameo appearance in the new Clairo music video (directed by the amazing Ayo Edebiri).

You couldn’t pull off these stunts unless a lot of people who knew better embraced willful ignorance as a badge of honor.

Having the lion’s share of John Waters’ oeuvre on the Criterion Channel is really helping me get through the days.

We had a real opportunity to protest in early November, it was called “voting.”

Severance feels like the only show that makes sense rn

Just think of all the proud parents whose kids went to law school to one day help dismantle the government.

Party of Observing Norms Politely Cites Lack of Precedent

My old friend Meghan Daum has written with honesty and moving clarity about the personal challenge of grappling with the fires. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/o...

The nobility of always being in charge yet never accepting any responsibility.

If Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are going to shill for mayo, can we at least get Julia Roberts and Richard Gere to stump for pastrami?

I look forward to the hearings when Hamburglar and the Mucinex Man are tapped to run the FDA

Sundance Look Back: Today, These Cutting Edge Hipsters Look Like Leonard Maltin

I’m watching Questlove’s jaw-dropping montage of SNL music, and it looks and sounds so effortless! The staggering thing is just to think about the sheer amount of planning, negotiation, and editing it must have taken to stitch it all together and make it look that easy.

When all seems horrible and you want to run screaming into the street, make art.

If you’re interested in the work of the late Jeff Baena, the darkly funny Life after Beth (with a pretty amazing cast) is on Amazon Prime for a few more days.
