Incidentally, if you want to know why the government doesn't have any money and services are starting to fall apart, you may enjoy this graph, from this article ifs.org.uk/taxlab/taxla...

Too many people at the top of the BBC think that they should be competing with the private sector not providing an important thing that the market can't. Should focus on providing detailed coverage of 'what's in it?' that someone with the reading age of a seven year old can parse.

I'm watching the Parliamentary debate about the self-ID e-petition and my JAW IS ON THE FLOOR. The MPs speaking are hitting ALL the key pro-trans talking points: - transphobic bias in EHRC - nightmare of SC ruling - toilet bans are awful - must hear trans voices - IGLA rainbow map 1/

Column, on the prime minister who had room to manoeuvre and chose to besiege himself instead. Again. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Could not agree more with Dan here.

Particularly impressive given there are around 300k long-term unemployed people and 150k social care vacancies. Great that half of all those people happen to be in the right part of the country and suited to care work.

This piece by Philip Augar never quite faces up to the underlying contradiction in his proposals of trying to sustain a supposed market in higher education through a ratcheting up of state control of every aspect of the higher education system www.ft.com/content/7514...

This letter from Tony Vaughan KC, the MP for Folkestone, is the clearest articulation I’ve seen on the flaws of the interim update from the EHRC. The section titled ‘Legal Incoherence’ hits the nail on the head.

1804. Oceans are now Battlefields. In the South China Sea a British convoy worth almost £1bn today is spotted by the French. It should be a massacre. Instead, Commodore Nathanial Dance is about to defeat a French battle squadron using some paint and the most overplayed hand in #navalHistory. /1 🧵

Close to TWO THOUSAND academics and educators say TRANS RIGHTS NOW. (Sorry if you've seen this (and the historians' letter!) too many times. The lack of an algorithm means we have to keep reposting it to catch people, and this really matters.)

Ian has done an excellent job of explaining the judgement and its implications. Well worth a read.

Storytime. The Hospitaliers and their multi-cultural crews.

John Curtice notes on Today that mayoral races could be won with as little as 25% of the vote. But it's worse than that: if turnout in (eg) the West of England race is the same as in 2001 - 36% - a party might win with 9% of eligible votes. First Past the Post is an absurdity in these conditions.

Why Labour's strategy of endlessly alienating its natural supporters, while conceding almost every argument to its opponents on the right, is a recipe for defeat www.adambienkov.co.uk/p/five-years...

Unsurprisingly, Sex Matters have already produced dodgy guidance on what the SC judgment means, trying to pressure organisations to ban trans people from using the loo. The anti-trans movement has significant resources and are now seeking to reduce our rights in practice even further.

Trans people can react however they want to this absurd judgement. They are the forefront of this and being angry or afraid is entirely justifiable. This below advice I share for those like myself and others not directly impacted. Mind what is being said today, and especially who is saying it. 🏳️‍⚧️

Apologies for quote posted @marwoodlennox.bsky.social here, I'm responding to the Times article he's quoting (which is paywalled and while I support paying for journalism I'm not giving Murdoch my money if I can help it.) I'm also about to make a partisan point, but sod it, political parties exist.
