The question is where are the companies? We know that tech, AI/ML, pharma, biotech, semiconductors, energy… huge parts of the US economy in 2025 depend on STEM development and training. Even farming - I've heard a lot about ML developments for farmers .. from an NSF-sponsored center 🧪

Yinz ready to stand up for science?

Evidently over the last few days (weeks?) my university IT has been sending all my email messages as spam. How's your day going? (Yes, I know all things considered, this is a very small problem.)

Thanks to everyone who came to support Ukraine tonight in Pittsburgh, including my physics colleagues!

I can confirm that @pittchemistry.bsky.social has admitted students - we’re having a visit weekend right now. Hopefully this is only temporary- the admin is being very cautious about a potentially >100M budget hole if NIH budgets are cut. www.wesa.fm/health-scien...

According to one current NSF employee, yesterday's mass firings cost the agency "decades of experience." From @cenmag.bsky.social: Here's what we know about the recent layoffs at federal agencies and the ripple effects they're expected to have on US science. cen.acs.org/careers/empl...

Over on LinkedIn, the head of the Executive Secretariat of the NIH -- a central part of NIH leadership 🧪🩺-- resigned with a lettter worth reading www.linkedin.com/posts/nathan...

Reminder: I'm helping to organize a symposium on "Chemical Reaction Networks, Retrosynthesis, and Reaction Prediction" for the Fall ACS meeting. We welcome submissions in many areas of studies of reactivity, including reaction design and optimization, ML and datasets, benchmarks, etc. 🧪 ⚗️ #compchem

List of "woke" science includes self-driving cars and solar eclipses. I looked at the list too. Great science at HBCUs. A study to understand why boys and girls learn math differently. etc. They know there's broad public support - so make a label and hide the details www.npr.org/2025/02/13/n...

I really, really want to put "barriers to cis-trans interconversion" into a grant proposal now. I'm even working on an NSF proposal for finding transition states? What other phrases should I add? Diverse training sets? Female graduate students? #ChemSky 🧪 ⚗️

First they came for the words… (And 🏳️‍⚧️ and grants and …) They seem to think if there’s so much happening at once, we can’t process it all…

Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 👩‍🔬🧑🏽‍🔬 The Women in Chemistry category on the Ci site has a range of graphics on women in chemistry, both historical and present-day! www.compoundchem.com/category/wom... #ChemSky 🧪 #WomenInScience

Somehow, #Pennsylvania is not on the list, despite over $2bn in NIH funding? Just called the AG and governor's office.

Years before one of the key Alzheimer’s proteins show up in a patient’s brain scan, a test developed at the University of Pittsburgh can detect small amounts of it in spinal fluid. The new research suggests the findings could lead to earlier diagnoses and better treatment for the disease.

If you're a chemist and you ever need to practice for an interview, email me instead of using an AI: [email protected] chemjobs chemsky 🧪⚗️

Hey #Pittsburgh folks - consider seeing __Trouble in Mind__ at the Pittsburgh Public Theater - now until Feb. 23rd. We went last night -- happened to also be #DivineNine night! Fantastic production. ppt.org/production/9...

If you’re an industry chemist who holds a BS/BA in Chemistry, we want to have a (compensated) conversation with you 🤗 Please share widely with chemical industry friends and colleagues! #ChemSky

Dear #compchem - @markussitzmann.bsky.social - is the code for the NCI / CADD resolver available anywhere .. in case a new server is needed?

The world is better with you in it. Yes, you. Keep your chin up. Light and kindness are still out there.

Sure would be a shame if #ChemSky had research on activation barriers for diverse cis-trans isomerization reactions or biased molecular dynamics for systematic sampling or measuring spin-polarization .. 😡 I guess I need to get some "Freedom Fries" with my lunch too?
