Celebrating the Independent Spirit Award!

No ice cream today!! 🚫🍦

In almost all of my films there's at least one scene featuring rain. All kinds of emotions can be expressed with it. Rain can be calming, scary, unpleasant, cozy, joyful etc... Flow sound design by Gurwal Coïc-Gallas.

It is me, your favourite Influencer

Flow concept art by Arthur Gore. In the script, the cat's house was just an ordinary house. As the animatic and concept art were being developed, we decided to turn it into a sculptor's workshop. It's important to be open to new ideas and not to follow the script too rigidly.

While making Flow we had a few test screenings with our team. It can be very useful to hear comments from people who might have more distance from the film, but to me it’s even more useful to just be in the room during the screening to get a sense of their reactions before they actually say anything

Tip to filmmakers - avoid featuring water in your film. Very difficult.

Flow might be the first film where a capybara is one of the main characters. I was inspired by how peaceful and chill they are. And how diplomatic and friendly they are with every type of animal. Although I identify with the cat the most, my aspiration is to be like the capybara.

We wanted the animals in Flow to behave like real animals instead of walking on 2 legs and telling jokes. Our animators studied references for every shot. So basically we paid them to watch cat videos!

Flow is the first ever film from Latvia to be nominated for the Oscars or the Golden Globes. This really means a lot to us and hopefully will give a boost not just to the film industry but Latvians in general.

Nope

The design of the boat in Flow is inspired by Mediterranean, boats called feluccas. Since this is the most important prop/location in the film, we spent a lot of time on designing all the details.

This shot doesn't advance the plot and could be removed without distrupting the film, but it was important to me to have moments like this where we can get to know the characters.

Flow is as much about the cat's fear of water as it's fear of others. Water is used as a visual metaphor to convey how the cat feels towards the rest of the characters.

On our way to the BAFTAs!

Flow opens with the cat looking at it's image reflected in water. In the first shot, the reflection gets distorted, trembling anxiosly, but at the end it calms down becomes clear.

The two cats I had growing up. Josephine and her son Oigars. The cat in Flow is inspired by them, but I wasn't trying to copy them exactly.

Flow took 5 years to make. At first it was just me developing the story and with the producers looking for funding. Gradually we were building the team. The production was actually quite fast - less than a year. I think we can make the next film faster.

Working on Flow. September 2022.

Love Blender! I’m using it for my next film as well.

Léo Silly Pélissier, the director of animation on Flow (he's the capybara of our team) made a very insightful presentation about creating the animation at the Blender conference last year. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxz6...

New Flow trailer! Out now on @streamonmax.bsky.social It's absolutely insane to see these quotes from filmmakers who's work has shaped me, saying nice things about Flow! 🥹 www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCz3...

l've never reread the final draft of the Flow script since finishing it. I made the animatic based on my memory of the script. I thought that if the idea is strong enough, l'll remember it and put it into the film.

Flow has now made more than 20 million $ at the global box office! Not bad for a film that cost 3.5 mil €. And we're still yet to open in many big countries. This shows that there is an appetite for more independant animation and it’s rapidly growing. variety.com/2025/film/gl...

I’m excited to announce that due to popular demand, we will release the full animatic of Flow aka Float aka the Crazy Frog Edition. Instead of using storyboards, all the scenes are designed directly in 3D. Everything was made in Blender and rendered in EEVEE.

Cat's out of the bag. Flow will join the @criterion.bsky.social www.indiewire.com/news/breakin...

During early development of Flow, I experimented with a more flat art style. It looked nice from one specific angle, but it didn't work with a moving camera.

In Flow we don't know what happened to the humans or where the flood is coming from because the story is told from the cat's point of view and the cat doesn't know these things. We left some clues for you to figure this out yourself.

Chillin with my cat friends. Photo shoot in a cat cafe for the New York Times. Thank you @carlosfilm.bsky.social for the interview and Sinna Nasseri for the photos! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/m...

I asked our sound designer Gurwal to make this moment feel like as if a sound recorder on the set would actually be swept away by the flood. As if they wouldn’t be able hold on to the microphone and get the right levels making the sound just barely usable. I wanted it to feel rough, raw and dirty.

The Flow post-credits scene was a super late addition. Just weeks before the premiere, I had an idea to add a clip of the ocean after the credits, but the frame felt too empty so I decided to add a certain character. The crew had left, so I reused animation from an earlier scene.

I wanted the story of Flow to have a circular structure. At first I thought that the cat would return to it's home at the end, but that didn't make sense. Then I realised that it doesn't need to be the same actual location. Returning to this image was enough.

Screened Flow at Disney, Sony Animation and Laika!!

Working on my next film whenever I have a chance.

I start writing the music while I'm still writing the screenplay. This is crucial for me, because I need the music to guide me. Not only does this help us to avoid using temp music from other films, but also it helps me understand the story and gives me ideas for how it develops.
