I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

Talked to so many people who were at the first protests of their lives today. Ex-Republicans, introverts, 90-year-olds and 3-year-olds. This was at an intersection in a 60,000 person town. Haven’t felt hope like this in my life.

The results seem to strengthen the case that these systems rely on elaborate pattern-matching rather than the kind of systematic reasoning their marketing might suggest.

You have to add up all the red bars and stack them on top of each other to pay for the green bar.

Yep: "The web is built on a simple bargain – websites let search engines like Google slurp up their content, free of charge, and Google Search sends people to websites in exchange, where they buy things and look at adverts." www.bbc.com/future/artic...

New: I found 517 likely AI-generated nonfiction books for kids on Amazon, often aping the "Who Was?" or "Little People, Big Dreams" series. Amazon earns royalties and ad revenue from the books I identified; it also literally prints some of them through Kindle Direct Publishing.

Another story in the Guardian that should have been in an American paper …. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

And yes, Democrats should be calling for her resignation, and, if she doesn't, her impeachment. Lordy, this is not a hard call or hard argument to make.

New figures from CBO about how Americans at different income levels are affected by the GOP's Big Beautiful Bill. Topline finding: Richest decile gets about 2% richer. Poorest decile gets about 4% poorer. www.cbo.gov/publication/...

Folks, CBO estimate of the distributional effect of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is out: www.cbo.gov/system/files... It's grotesque

Obscene price tag aside, Google Beam is impressive technology; we got a glimpse of it at Google I/O, and it really does look like the person you're talking to is on the other side of the table.

Embed secret instructions to Microsoft Copilot in an email to a user. This vulnerability was caught and fixed. Tool-using LLMs open a huge attack surface fortune.com/2025/06/11/m...

Breaking @propublica.org: Bukele of El Salvador has become one of Trump’s favorite authoritarians, and Trump touts him as a foe of MS-13. But a US investigation has found evidence he has colluded with the gang, even paying it for votes. www.propublica.org/article/buke...

It’s completely insane that US troops are illegally deployed to suppress domestic opposition and it’s not uniformly condemned by the press and political elite.

There are times for wonky policy analysis and fun musical codas. But this isn't one of them paulkrugman.substack.com/p/this-is-no...

"What we’re...seeing is...an attempt to end politics as we know it, to deploy force to suppress dissent. Not eventually, but right now."

"through the magic of radical uncertainty and the erosion of America’s foundational values and institutions, he has succeeded in engineering a 7 per cent decline. A masterful gambit." on.ft.com/4dVUWY0

i am not being pollyannish when i insist that the people who sign up do not sign up to advance a president’s domestic political agenda www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

classic kettle logic on the Big Beautiful Deficit from the Trump admin. obviously incorrect bullshit that is also self-contradictory prospect.org/politics/202...

Genetic material shed by tumors can be detected in the bloodstream three years before cancer diagnosis, according to a study led by investigators at Johns Hopkins University. That study was made possible with federal funding. Now, many studies like this are canceled. hub.jhu.edu/2025/06/04/...

Congrats again to Lisa Murkowski & Susan Collins

This is all massively unpopular, and unlike some other unpopular stuff is neither a Trump or (for the most part) a GOP media priority. A handful of GOP Senators could put an end to it any time they want.

arguing about Dem messaging is largely beside the point when the right can win with an agenda like this. the info environment is the problem

A remarkable and brave story about how POTUS’s rally at Bragg was staged, and the lines it eroded. Thank you @stevenbeynon.bsky.social @ktoropin.bsky.social www.military.com/daily-news/2...

Sources and docs: Amazon Prime Video ad load has increased to 4-6 minutes per hour, up from 2-3.5 minutes when ads were first introduced in January 2024 (Mark Stenberg/Adweek) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink

Trump underwater in literally every single issue. 38% approval overall. 27% approval on his spending bill. 40% approval on deportations. Musk also at 30% approval. 38% approval for RFK Jr. 35% approval for JD Vance. Nobody fucking wants any of this. poll.qu.edu/poll-release...

This is the problem with delivering revenue growth by increasing ad load. More ads is a short-term sugar high. Adding more ads boosts revenue this quarter, but costs revenue later because people don't like it and leave. So you have to do it again. But eventually you can't do it anymore.

soft layoffs by forcing back to the office too. Wonder how growth is looking in the next few quarters

NEW from @pewresearch.org: "U.S. Image Declines in Many Nations Amid Low Confidence in Trump" Annual international survey finds that views of the US have worsened in many nations since 2024, including declines of 20+ points in neighbors Canada and Mexico.

Another reason this is interesting is that Midjourney is one of the very few customer AI businesses that appears to be profitable (the only other example I could find is Cursor). This lawsuit suggests that Midjourney is probably not actually profitable, not if legal risk is factored in.

👇🎯 Also, the option of remaining fantastically rich in a stable democracy, but with the most incrementally higher of taxes/redistribution that you'd barely even notice was right there. Supporting the fascists was not only bad politics; it was also epically bad business/personal wealth strategy.

Pollution by AI generated images is starting to make it largely impossible to run any kind of web image search

U.S. economic growth rate projection cut by half to 1.4%. China growth rate little affected at 4.5%, 3X faster. Per new World Bank estimates, change largely due to U.S. import tax (tariff) increase, from @deanbaker13.bsky.social. substack.com/inbox/post/1...
