U.S. economic growth rate projection cut by half to 1.4%. China growth rate little affected at 4.5%, 3X faster. Per new World Bank estimates, change largely due to U.S. import tax (tariff) increase, from @deanbaker13.bsky.social. substack.com/inbox/post/1...

Amazing how hard it is to write: “Police shoot at journalists.”

This makes financial sense because the "AI researchers" are not being paid relative to their ability to develop functional, profitable products. Rather, they are like celebrities: paid to bring an audience, in this case shareholders chasing a bubble.

Trump's tariffs are working wonders; China is now projected to grow three times as much as the United States in 2025 cepr.net/publications... It's very MAGA!

“What the Apple paper shows, most fundamentally, regardless of how you define AGI, is that these LLMs that have generated so much hype are no substitute for good, well-specified conventional algorithms.”

So-called “less-lethal” weapons like those that have been used against demonstrators in Los Angeles can cause severe, lasting harm like nerve or brain damage or blindness. They can also kill. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

Something has happened in the months since January that has led the World Bank to dramatically lower its economic growth forecasts. And whatever it is, it's hurting the United States more than any other major economy. (China remains unscathed.)

Not telling you anything you don’t know, but this is rapturous, cult-like insanity. A total retreat into fantasy rather than confronting the challenges of the real world.

yeah I'm not sure this is so much a petty feud between two men as it is the president of the United States sending troops to attack the people they're supposed to protect

The political scientists who've seen these movies before are terrified, folks

This is the kind of thing that is going to happen constantly now that we have an unaccountable masked gang with complete impunity: Random scammers, stalkers and criminals are just going to pretend to be ICE, because why not?

Recent reasoning paper from Apple is an interesting study, & getting much attention (e.g., article below), but.... (1/2) www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Morale must be sky high!

State troops sent to Los Angeles by the Trump administration, without the approval of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, were expected to sleep on floors or outdoors, a source told the Chronicle.

Three things about this comment: 1. Homan is a White House adviser who doesn't have the power to arrest anyone. Neither does Trump. 2. Trump once again acts like he's not in charge. "If I were Tom, I'd do it." Uh, doesn't he work for you? 3. THREATENING TO ARREST A GOVERNOR IS A FIVE ALARM FIRE

Authoritarian propaganda 101: create or exaggerate chaos, insert yourself as the necessary solution, demand loyalty and praise. It rewrites history in real time, creating confusion about what did or didn’t happen. This is compounded today by the disastrously bad information environment.

It would be so great if Democratic elected officials started acting as if the president was trying to arrest them all, because he is.

I ran an experiment, simultaneously posting articles on Bluesky and X, and then testing to see how many people actually clicked and read them. The numbers on Bluesky are higher, both because the X algorithm downranks journalism, and because Bluesky attracts readers, not just shitposters.

Once again, she & Tim Walz were right & they actually did all the Things Democrats Must Do & it didn’t work because of racism, misogyny, & a totally broken media/information environment.

YouTube apparently quietly changed moderation policies back in December to be more in line with what it thinks the Trump Administration is looking for and the examples are baffling. I don’t understand what “newsworthy” means. Has famous people in it? This is basic crank content.

In a normal environment, it’d be a pretty big deal to see a president threatening a private citizen with “very serious consequences” if he donates to candidates the president doesn’t like. But in June 2026, news like this is eclipsed by dozens of other scandals. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

NEW: Trump is spiraling. We face the consequences. Where are the other branches? James Madison expected more from the other "departments," as he referred to them Tonight, at Law Dork:

My latest on reasoning models and that new Apple paper. open.substack.com/pub/joshuaga...

New article in Rolling Stone www.rollingstone.com/p/trump-dest...

Trump has federalized at least 2,000 National Guard forces and reportedly plans to deploy troops to Los Angeles over Governor Newsom’s objections. If that happens, it will be the first time since 1965 that a president has sent troops into a state without a state request. 1/19

Cannot stress enough that this is a pitiful action by a weak, scared, pathetic group of insecure, wannabe authoritarians, and they should be mocked until the end of time for wanting to bring in the military over some people protesting them at a Home Depot.

This is the second day in a row that federal agents shot us both

I've done a fair bit of research & read more on how to increase retirement savings. It's made me pretty pessimistic about every strategy except mandatory, universal pensions for baseline retirement income security. Lots of people just won't choose to save but will need $ later.

🧵; we’re in an alarming situation now but there is an established body of research findings on stuff like this and it is better to refer to that than doom in an undisciplined way that keeps us from reacting effectively to the current regime’s assault on democracy

There's actually an extremely large scholarly literature about this. With some regularity, dictators order their troops to shoot protestors, the troops are like "wtf no," and then the dictator falls. I'll dig ho and dump some cites below in a second

What’s happening in LA is an a good reminder of how ever more fragmented our information landscape has become On Bluesky it’s almost entirely about executive overreach; on X it’s “LA is burning; deport them all”

It's the Washington Monument in the background that really takes this to next-level dystopian

Good thread. I continue to be struck by how much of the AI buzz focuses on tasks LLMs don't seem to actually do well or helpfully - because they sound cool - and not on the things LLMs can do (but which imply only marginal increases to productivity).

Last month AI crawlers generated 90% of my site's traffic, forcing me to pay penalties Problem solved after moving nameservers to Cloudflare+turning on AI crawler blocking. Site monthly outbound data back to ~40GB per month, down from 800GB (!!) No impact on human visitors

🧵What Musk is experiencing now, along with many of his billionaire friends, is something they forsook respect, decency, and public opinion to avoid. It didn't matter. It won't save them. It never does in an autocracy. 1/8
