Youtube is absolutely infested with these AI music channels. I've seen a million variations on low-fi, groove and funk genres, with an AI generated thumbnail. The audio is all Suno-generated tracks. Given the views and glowing comments, this new technique of pawning AI slop is very successful.

id Software's Command Keen 4 starts up with this cool intro sequence where the words "COMMANDER KEEN" scroll by in the background with what appears to be a transparency effect. I was curious how this was done.

Here's how the original Prince of Persia (VGA) for the IBM PC draws a level. Sorry it was tough to capture it right at the start - PoP does this very fast! #retrocomputing #retrogaming #ibmpc #emulation

A memory visualizer can lead to some interesting discoveries. Here's the in-memory level map for Wolfenstein 3D level 1 - with enemies clearly visible walking around. #retrocomputing #retrogaming #emulation #ibmpc

Watching Wolfenstein 3D Render in Slow-Mo Wolf3D renders to three pages of video memory, reserving the fourth for miscellaneous graphics. It flips between the first three pages to achieve a buttery-smooth framerate (for the time, and if you had a 486) #retrocomputing #retrograming #emulation

Another SCI animation, this time from Sierra's murder mystery adventure title, The Colonel's Bequest. It's a bit of a sleeper Sierra game - if you never tried it, give it a shot, it's pretty good! #retrocomputing #retrogaming #emulation #sierra

Here's another Sierra SCI animation, this time from King's Quest IV. We can see a little detail on the portrait on the left before it gets covered up by webs... #retrocomputing #retrogaming

Sierra's SCI engine was still vector-based, but it had double the resolution of AGI and much more advanced operations. Now artists could specify gradients and other patterns. Here's the first scene in Space Quest III showing off the increased complexity. #retrocomputing #sierra #ibmpc #retrogaming

An animation of King's Quest I drawing a scene into its back buffer before copying it to the screen. The sprites flicker at the end because the game is replacing the preserved background rectangles before redrawing the current sprite position. #retrogaming #retrocomputing #sierra #ibmpc

I wrote an article to explain why FastDoom is fast: fabiensanglard.net/fastdoom/ind....

A breakdown of observed demographics from my Bluesky feed

Sierra's old AGI games used vector graphics. On earliest versions of Kings Quest, you could watch the new screen get drawn line by line when you changed screens. Later DOS versions would do this rendering off-screen, and copy the results into graphics memory. #retrocomputing #sierra #ibmpc

Reminded today of this amazingly weird art in the Kaypro II owner’s manual. #vintagecomputer #vintagecomputing #retrocomputing #kaypro #8bit #1980s #80sdesign
