Solid movie weekend, which always makes me happy. MadS: Hell yeah. 4/5 D.A.R.E. t-shirts I’M STILL HERE: Chilling. 4.5/5 soufflés CONCLAVE: Catty. 3.5/5 THE MONKEY: Sure I’d love it, but just could not get on its wavelength. 2.5/5 realtor business cards #FilmSky

As my son has aged into his teen years, I feel a little obsolete in all the normal ways. These fleeting moments of being needed are precious.

Another great night clocking in for THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM and Poe-inspired short THE CONQUEROR WORM, all as part of Late Shift at the Grindhouse, at @icfilmscene.bsky.social (with the inimitable @valetiowa.bsky.social). #FilmSky

This week’s movie I love that I fear will be, or already has been, forgotten. #FilmSky

Saw a couple unremarkable movies over the weekend, but I’ll focus on the positive: MOLOCH, which has been on my list a long while, was terrific. The sound, the look, the mood (dark, but artfully leavened). And that central performance by Sallie Harmsen. 4.5/5 sinister peat bogs. #FilmSky

What is the coolest shot in movies? #filmsky

Oh! Sweet Nuthin’

Calm down, Home Depot.

Two incredible watches this weekend. Saulnier does not miss; 4.5/5 dashboard cams. HIS THREE DAUGHTERS wrecked me in that final act; 5/5 bags of rotten apples. #FilmSky

Oh, is there a nachos-ball today? (Go, Eagles!)

Simple hack for feeling better about everything for a couple hours: Go catch an open-mic night, organized and hosted by the local high-schoolers. My son got to play some guitar on stage with some friends. Whole thing was done to raise funds for Shelter House, in Iowa City. Shit yes, kids.

Hell yeah, Friday. #NowPlaying

I do not know this man, but the banger obit he wrote for himself deserves a read. R.I.P., hoss.

Still think about this guy all the time.

Quiet—but goooooood—movie weekend. #FilmSky

This week’s movie I love that feels destined to be forgotten: LEAVE NO TRACE (2018) #filmsky

We feast. #filmsky

Damn good movie weekend. #FilmSky

Hell yeah. Well done, [Matthew McConaughey voice] Mr. Sodder-bergh.

Hey, look, spinning another perfect album.

This kind of rad folklore is germane to my interests as a piece of proud Mississippi River trash.

I still need to see CHALLENGERS, THE BRUTALIST, and THE SUBSTANCE (all on tap for next week!), but as of now, my favorites of 2024.

Now spinning a perfect album.

Good picture. Great performances. Dug it.

My first Lynch was LOST HIGHWAY, a seminal theater experience for me. A college professor assigned BLUE VELVET and enriched my understanding of it and all things Lynch in follow-up conversations. This week, I had a lengthy Lynch chat with a close friend. He’s always been *right there*. Goddamn it.

Now seated for a very long matinee, the way January intended.

Got to catch this January gem last night—first time on the big screen—for “Late Shift at the Grindhouse,” at @icfilmscene.bsky.social, Iowa City (with the venerable @valetiowa.bsky.social, no less). Dig it and hell yeah and praise be.

My RSVP to your party.
