A #Spendful April update! Enjoyed a family lunch at a local taco chain plus a cheeky bubble tea, got myself a new haircut, and loaded up on groceries at Trader Joe’s and Fresh Harvest for lots of homemade meals.

POV you forget to do the group assignment but the teacher is the world’s largest economy.

And #Spendful April has begun. Rather than provide daily updates (do not enjoy) I will post these weekly spending summaries. So simple and more informative in some ways. Freebies so far: picking up kids from “school” in the w e-bike, slow cooked black beans 🤤, learning to read, gardening with kids

Spring gardening! Trying all sorts of new things this year - a little pole bean tunnel for the kids to crawl, spring peas, chard (so forgiving), spinach, broccoli, tomatoes from seed outdoors, and just trying to cram in as much goodness as possible into my small boxes.

We have some fun and #spendful moments in April, including: A children's theater performance at The Alliance Easter egg hunt with the cousins Best friend birthday party GA Renaissance Faire and an actual date on our actual Anniversary weekend (11 years and counting!)

Who’s up for another #Spendful month? April edition. Same rules, same deal. And boy do we need it. March was a bloodbath in both dining out and groceries. We experimented with using a local farm coop for most of our food in March including proteins and sadly, it’s just too $$$. But now we know.

We're gearing up to study Canada for our homeschool global trek next week. The amount of Children's literature about Canada at the local library is DIRE. I have not had this problem with any other country so far. Writing to the library! 🇨🇦 Give me your favorite Canadian children's books!

My son finally slept an 8-hour stretch, the most consecutive sleep I've had in 2 years. I woke up at 5:00am and before 6:00am, I'd cleaned an entire room, read a newsletter, did a load of laundry, made a banana bread, made coffee, and had a complete convo with the husbie. Sleep is important.🛌

Officially starting a reading curriculum next week. We’ve slowly learned all the letter sounds and a bit of blending letters to make words. Grateful we can go at our son’s pace. We also started our first lesson on addition equations. #kindergarten #homeschool #eisforexcited

You have to go 🚽but you’re a mom. #toydelivery #metime #ittakestwo

Seeing some much red on the radar tonight as storms approach. We listened to a kids podcast (Who Smarted?) on tornadoes today. Fun fact, before 1950, the NWS was discouraged from saying "tornado" on air fearing it would cause panic! Stay safe! Stay weather aware! Thank you @altnws.bsky.social!!

Things just taste better when you’re outside.

I love to joke with our Canadian family about American national pride, but this year, we're going full Canadian on Canada Day. Red and white clothes, maple things, poutine, bbq and fire pit with Canadian beer. Canada is our sovereign neighbor and we want her to stay that way!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Mural complete! So cute.

This day I learned we need a Costco-size tray of corn to feed my small family of corn fiends. #itscorn #feedinglittles

Would love for dining out to stay hovering around $300 per month. Average is $560 which is even a reduction from the last "no spend". Will report back in March but we're already planning to have breakfast out at our local coffee shop this morning. (At least we are biking there...) 😆🚴‍♀️

Britton decided to switch banks at the end of last month = transaction history chaos. I can't really tell where our total spending reductions are at least right now. Final tally for dining out $303 Final tally for grocery $1289 (pretty good considering we entertained 7+ people twice this month!)

Some big purchases we made that just happen to fall in February (as in we set a target and saved for them and when the funds were available, we bought them.) #cashbaby $1300 Laptop (been waiting for this since July 2024) $1500 for Hotels in St. Simon's/Savannah $78 first hotel in our Canada trip

#Spendful Month final round-up: $250 homeschool co-op $32.39 Costco Gas $1.59 Costco Lunch $19.53 Wine from local shop $25 Cell phone (Visible) $808 Auto Loan (accidentally paid this twice!) Freebies: Lunches comped by work or points, sunny days playing outside

#standwithukraine

Progress on a $15 mural with some Posca markers and a projector borrowed from a friend. Don’t follow me for interior design advice. #kidsbedroom

We made some big purchases (vacay, laptop🙃) yesterday so just waiting for all the transactions to flow in. I'll probably do a wrap-up post tomorrow and then a little analysis to see how we did. Overall, "spendful" has been way more fun and enlightening than our classic hard-line "no spend".

There's an economic blackout planned on February 28th that seems to be a demonstration of the power of individual consumers. Love it. I'm interested to see how this protest plays out, but I hope participants realize they can do this EVERY day. I continue to find ways to shop local, shop small.

The People’s Union boycott calls for no spending on fast food, gas or at major retailers – “No Amazon, No Walmart, No Best Buy” – beginning at midnight on Feb. 27 through midnight Feb. 28.

Day 25 #Spendful February $42.80 Dentist $60.27 Internet Freebies: skipping rocks, riding bikes, beep beeps, melting down and picking ourselves back up again

To be completely fair to Britton, he did spend the morning saving us over $1000 by switching insurance plans, switching up bank accounts, etc. And he's starting a new job tomorrow! 🕺

The wheels seem to be falling off a bit here at the end. We had a couple not-so-spendful purchases $25 and $40 Britton's action figures purchases 🤦‍♀️ $15 Revolution donuts (an apology purchase to Elim for eating some donuts he was saving - I will let you guess who did that.) 🤷‍♀️

Day 24 #Spendful February $49.43 Target sundries $37.07 Local Mediterranean spot (Spontaneous decision to dine out so the whole family could attend track club kick off) $42.18 Aldi $9 Ebay, Calculator for taking PE Exam $3 Kroger, basil $22 Petco cat food

Day 23 #Spendful February $30 Whole Foods Grocery, mostly fruit Freebies: Enjoying a library audiobook Differ We Must by Steve Inskeep, new season of White Lotus

Gah! Got behind while having fun. Day 21 and 22 #Soendful February $333 Beddy’s bunk bed sets (matching bedding for the kids bedroom upgrade) $$$ Retirement Savings $57 Water $49 Gas $23 Pet Food Freebies: hanging with grandma, having friends for dinner, pajama chamber music concert for kids

Day 20 #Spendful February $77 Minute Clinic from when Britton had the flu $32 Simplisafe Subscription $$$$ For the mortgage Freebies: learning how to spell the word “fart”, starting a new scoby for homemade kombucha, playing dolls in a historic home

Day 19 #Spendful February $39 Consumer Reports subscription (plan to purchase some new appliances this year) $60 Blick Art Supplies (Kids renovation, homeschool) $35 Aldi soy milk (SO MUCH SOY MILK) $38 Fresh Harvest Farm Box Home meals are so much better + Elim at a cooked carrot!

And forgot to add $215 for medical. Still paying off that surprise gallbladder surgery... #old

Day 18 #Spendful February $60 Sticker labels for all the kids stuff (finally ran out after 3 yrs) $25 Britton’s Professional Engineer registration $44 Chik-fil-a That last one is the least spendful purchase so far. There was a big mistake with our grocery delivery and I was unprepared!

Day 17 #Spendful February $49.90 bulk baking supplies Costco $41.12 Medical (birth center) $30.03 Home Depot (kids bedroom Reno) $202.86 van oil change, wheel alignment Freebies: Extra family time with the long weekend

Enjoying some analog rage posts during our walk in the park

Day 16 #Spendful February $51.79 Publix (Soy Milk, Creamer, Coffee) $15.08 Home Depot (Sandpaper and spackle for the kids room renovation) $23.60 a couple items for homeschool Freebies: Delivering a meal train to a family, lots of wrestling that turns from laughter to screaming to laughter again 😆

Day 15 of #Spendful February $13.40 Items for Scouts (whistle, flashlight, etc.) $190 Trader Joe's (Freezer and Pantry restocking - included in my tally from my last post.) Freebies: Made an ice cream truck out of an old box, Felix woke up and said "all done nigh nigh da da"

We're 15 days into our month and $764.49 into our grocery budget. I make most of our food as from scratch as possible - a benefit of being home. I think a lot about groceries and meal planning and yet, it is so hard to move the needle on this expense.

A belated Day 14 #Spendful February $14.60 Whole Foods $91.33 Farmer's Market (Includes $42 2x dozen yellow roses for yours truly in case you thought I'd go without 👸) $45.90 Buena Gente Cuban (initially we were thinking WaHo for dinner, but after a hike in the morning, we were ready to EAT.)

No better way to test your reflexes than cooking a new recipe in a dirty kitchen with two young children who know how to drag a step stool everywhere. At one point, the youngest had scissors and was starting to cut the older kids pant leg. #cominginhot

Day 13 #Spendful February $41.85 Patel Brothers (Elim requested palak paneer for dinner, we also got my favorite salty Indian snack!) Freebies: Britton’s boss took him out for lunch today, the kids loved playing with bubbles we got at party

About halfway through February and down 72.4% in expenses, but it's not over yet! Barring any unexpected expenses, 🤞 would love to settle around 50% below our average spent by the end of the month. February 2024 was a mess with a new baby and medical stuff. We only reduced expenses by 20%.

I know I am calling this a #spendful month but it’s really just extra #spendful. We use @ynabofficial.bsky.social to make decisions with our money that align with our values all the time. Not eating out today even though we were celebrating was a good example.

Day 12 #Spendful February $131.56 Natural Gas $40.21 gasoline $10 to mail a college transcript Big News! My husband passed his FE (first try) and is a huge step closer to getting his professional engineering license. We celebrated with food we already had. 🍻🫑🍚

Freebies today? I don’t know man. We had a fun weekend which usually means a disorganized week. Just trying to survive to Friday (when we can have more fun 🫣😎!)
