Here's a banner you can hang on your door to signal that your office is an inclusive space. A CUNY faculty member worked with a designer to make this to support students, but it could work in many settings! Downloadable link in comments. #AcademicSky #diversity #DEI

This sounds like a good opportunity for anyone thinking of leaving the academy or wondering about how to apply their PhD more broadly. #altac #leavingacademia #careers #PhDcareers

I have trouble leaving work behind at the end of the day and I know academics do too. So here's a good tip from author Cal Newport: create a quirky phrase that you say at the end of your workday. Then repeat it if you find yourself being drawn back into work. Article in comments! #AcademicSky #AcWri

This sounds obvious, but be sure in grant applications to have a statement early in the proposal that gives a quick, concrete overview of the research. Sometimes we get so focused on the details that we forget to share the bigger picture! #AcWri #AcademicSky #writingtips

Here are some really helpful reflections for making time and space for writing (and just plain staying sane) during these difficult times.

"... wherever the content seems unbelievable, inscrutable or chaotic, it is best ... to look around it, for actions or effects that are far more portentous.... [this] reveals a strategic takeover of national interests that will demolish the state’s functionality..." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/o...

Since I left my faculty position and transitioned to owning an editing business, people have wanted to know more about how I did it. So I finally wrote down that story! #academicsky #freelancer #altac #careerchange #acwri #editing www.goldenrodeditorial.com/blog/startin...

A client just told me that he is trying to be bold when working on his argument. I think "bold" is a great word to use for this kind of work! Sometimes we are so worried about people pushing back that we soften things too much. But strong arguments are bold! #AcademicSky #AcWri #AcademicWriting

Beware friends who say, "book chapters must not be above 10,000 words." In reality chapter lengths vary a lot. It's more important to think about total book length and to make sure chapters are roughly equal in length (except for intro and conclusion). Blog in comments. #AcWri #academicwriting

When I'm talking with academic authors, they often compare themselves to others who they see as more prolific, better writers etc. Remember that we never know what resources others have access to. They may teach less, have more home support, or more $ to hire editors and coaches. #AcWri #writingtips

How do other #freelancers feel at the start of a new year? I've been struck by how my project management software puts me back to zero. Zero hours tracked, zero income in, etc. It feels stressful, even though I know that this is in a sense an arbitrary starting over.

Here's an exciting effort to help make Palestinian poet and activist Refaat Alareer's posthumous book of poetry a best seller. Order a copy today since it's being released tomorrow. www.dropsitenews.com/p/refaats-bo...

❄️ Today is my first day this winter editing while its snowing! ❄️ As an editor, the weather can affect how I feel about my work. It's cozy to be reading about Arabic philosophy while watching bright flakes float down. Does the weather affect how you feel about your work? #AcWri #AcademicSky #writing

Here's an invitation to pause & read your draft for what you LOVE in it! Last night while teaching, I had a lovely chat about finding the good/beauty in our own work, seeing what *is* working. It's such a shift for many writers in revision mode, & vital! #WritingCommunity #WritingAdvice #AmEditing

#editors and #faculty. I'm helping a client on a grant and am trying to wrap my head around the difference between the conceptual framework and the lit review. I'm never done a grant that had these separate sections before. Thoughts? #AcWri #academicwriting #PhDSky #facultywriters

I just finished editing a 100,000 word manuscript on the Ottoman empire. I'm always surprised at the end of working on a manuscript about how I often feel sad. It's like I don't get to hang out with a friend anymore who I spent a lot of time and care on! #writers #academicediting #editing
