The Guardian view on social care: while politicians dither, those in need suffer - The government isn’t dithering, it’s deliberately kicking the issue into the long grass, shameful. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

In the last interview of his life (1996), astronomer Carl Sagan gave an eerily prescient warning of the dangers that come when you cannot ask skeptical scientific questions of those in authority. Watch and ask yourself: was he right?

New post just out from @ldfreedman.bsky.social "The Art of Bad Strategy" - on the car crash of Trump's tariff shambles and the wider lessons to be learnt. (£/free trial) samf.substack.com/p/the-art-of...

Kent County Council elections take place on 1st May. The map below shows the results of the previous election in 2021. You would think the Tories must have won at least 80% of the vote, in fact they won less than 50%. That’s what our old, tired electoral system produces locally and nationally.

A strong Europe that rolls on at high speed: not just possible. Necessary. Efficient EU train services offer clean and smart ways to travel. We want to bridge gaps in the EU's rail network with a new high-speed rail plan ↓ europa.eu/!nvqbGc

The EU is expected to push for special youth visas at next month’s summit. Starmer should say yes 🇪🇺👍 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The Guardian view on City deregulation: a recipe for recklessness. The Treasury seems to think relaxing financial rules will boost growth. There’s little evidence for this idea – and every reason to believe it could exacerbate risks. Correct! www.theguardian.com/business/com...

Britain gives verdict on key issues - Most people want to see closer trade ties with the European Union. Asked whether Donald Trump's erratic trade policy means the UK should seek closer ties with the blow, 50% of all voters agreed. Just 14% are opposed. 🇪🇺👍 www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

Trump’s idea of an Easter message, full of love, compassion, humility? No, it’s Trump!

In GE2019, the Tories got 56% of seats on 44% of the votes. In GE2024, Labour got 63% of seats on 34% of the votes. We need to change this system so that seats match votes - voters should get the MPs and policies they vote for. #ChangeTheVotingSystem

Trump is against a fairer, more proportional voting system. Probably the best reason to back electoral reform to date!

Two-party politics is dying in Britain. The electorate are on a collision course with the electoral system. First past the post is an amplifier: the winner takes all, everyone else gets nothing. When voters divide between multiple choices, it’s a recipe for chaos. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

If you live here you should pay your taxes here…

True statement. Unfortunately if the UK/US trade deal goes ahead the fabulously wealthy global tech giants like Amazon will pay even less tax! Isolated and alone Brexit Britain will have to do what Trump demands.

Britain, a trading nation, now has a vital choice to make about its priority trading partners: - the EU, where agreements are made, kept, reciprocal, based on international norms, & enforced by a court - the USA, where agreements are made, broken, changed & broken again at a whim, with no recourse

2023: Donald Trump to Nigel Farage, "If I was president I'd end that war in one day, it'll take 24 hours. It would be easy" 2025: Marco Rubio, "If it's not possible to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine then we're at a point where President Trump is at a point where he'll say we're done"

In case you missed it ... This is the electoral truth about Brexit that for some reason Labour continues to ignore. #RejoinEU 🇬🇧🇪🇺
