Took the collecting blinders off today - for years I thought I needed to pay $25+ for a 1949 Bowman card of Neil Berry, only to realize that he has cards in 1950-52 (some that I like even more!) that can fill my need for much much less. Changed my mindset, changed my spreadsheet, and got my card!

Vladdy was such a badass that in the 2012 Topps set he appeared on both leagues’ top three active batting average leaders cards.

On this day in 1919, Monte Irvin was born in Haleburg, AL. Many had thought he would be the man to integrate the big leagues. My favorite Irvin fact? He earned SIXTEEN varsity letters in 4 sports at Orange High School in NJ. Here’s an in-progress painting of him with Newark in 1939.

For my latest newsletter, I wrote a bit about celebrating my son's birthday, coming out of my depression, struggling to find a sense of purpose, and the worthwhile work of making space for what is good and beautiful in the world. otherthoughts.beehiiv.com/p/out-of-the...

A question for #cardsky and maybe specifically people like @npbcardguy.bsky.social. The 2025 First Pitch autos of Masanori Murakami have a completely different signature from anything I've ever seen from him and I'm wondering if Topps screwed up or if there's something else going on.

Made soup for a sick neighbor yesterday, emailed a friend today with a detailed offer of help for after she has surgery next month. I think the way I’m gonna survive all this is going to have to be on a small, local level, just taking care people where I am and however I can.

Bringing this up to @craigcalcaterra.bsky.social’s attention, because this seems right up his alley

New to my collection: 1910 E93 Standard Caramel of Hall of Famer Fred Clarke

For those interested, I am blogging this set. #cardsky 93ud.blogspot.com

😭

I’m struck by the similarities between the Orioles and Tigers offseasons. Both signed a bunch of players, but neither really addressed their weaknesses from last year. Strange approach

No hate from me on the Tigers offer here. Is what it is

🙄 To reiterate my earlier point on this - I want Cobb to do well, but we could have signed Verlander to the exact same deal and believe not doing so will prove a bad move, notwithstanding the extra plusses of letting a Tigers legend end his career in Detroit

Wishing Chet Lemon a very happy 70th birthday! He has been very ill lately 😔 Lemon was GREAT. He had a 124 career OPS+, including 135 from 1978-1984. And he was an excellent defensive center fielder. Only 3 CF in history had +90 Rfield and +200 Rbat: Willie Mays, Tris Speaker, and Chet Lemon.

The sound of booing energizes Philadelphia the way they harvested children's fear in Monsters, Inc.

19 years ago, I ate a paella that was so good I've never forgotten it. 10 years ago, I jotted down the line "Shortly after Zinedine Zidane head-butts Marco Materazzi, I eat the best meal of my life" and then spent a long time trying to come up with the words that would follow it.

Well, after having this on my watchlist for like 3 years, I finally bit the bullet and added a new card to the Every Tiger collection. From the extremely difficult 1934 Annis Furs set

I know the world needs art & literature & yada yada but can we be real that it feels pretty silly to catch up on the news in the morning & then be like, okee dokee, time to go finish writing this poem I started about a weird bug I saw the other day. Yes, this is an actual poem I’m working on.

The toddler’s music request this morning is Wheels on the Bus on repeat but instead of the same song again and again he wants to hear a different version of the song each time & somehow listening to 25 slightly different versions of Wheels on the Bus is so much worse than hearing the one on repeat.

Very pleased to see Flaherty back on the Tigs! Fills a major need in the rotation and he’s good! The big need is still that extra bat, though the options are limited

To clarify: Alex Faedo was granted a fourth option last offseason because he had less than five years of service time in MLB or minors due to injuries. Last year counted as his fifth year, so even though Tigers didn't use the option, they couldn't carry it over. So he's out of options.

Tigers new to the mix, though no posts yet
