Very cool to see the technocracy paper with @grattonecon.bsky.social mentioned here, along with many other great papers. open.substack.com/pub/bestofec...

Based on many useful comments, @grattonecon.bsky.social and I have updated the working paper over last couple of days. We now explicitly extend the model to account for the risk of democratic backsliding and explain the rationale behind our assumptions more clearly. www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/60mq5...

Seems like a good time to read this beautiful paper! www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...

Immensely thought-provoking essay by @dacemoglumit.bsky.social! on.ft.com/3CU6rRD

Perhaps we should not be so surprised by the recent electoral results in many Western democracies. A key insight from game theory is that political coalitions may be less stable in the long term than we often assume. 👇

What do “populist” voters want from their representatives? Why not ask them? Kevin Arceneaux reports populist voters want representatives to: 1. Listen less to experts and do less research! 2. Listen more to ordinary people!

What do populist voters want from their government? In this research note, I found some interesting answers to this question. The TL;DR is that they want more democracy, not less democracy, but they are willing to achieve in paradoxically illiberal ways (or what seem illiberal to us scholars).

Fascinating paper on where 6000 global elites went to college. Billionaires, CEOs, heads of state, central bankers, etc. In a word: Harvard. Fully 10% of global elites went to Harvard. Elite US schools are over-represented (23% IvyPlus), but nobody comes close to Harvard. 🧵

On my way to the airport again. ✈️🌏✈️🌎✈️🌍 Touring “Bad Democracy Traps” with talks in Chicago (Harris), Turin (CCA) and Milan (Bocconi). LINK: www.gratton.org/papers/BadDe...

Great combination of theory + experimental work by Jacob, Lee, and Gratton. “when voters perceive higher levels of gridlock, they may discount extremism and be more willing to vote for candidates whom they would otherwise view as too extreme.” www.promarket.org/2024/06/26/i...

In new research, @marcjacob.bsky.social, @bartonelee2.bsky.social (our #StiglerAffiliate Fellow), and @grattonecon.bsky.social argue that legislative gridlock is not only a consequence of Congress’ polarization but also a cause of it. www.promarket.org/2024/06/26/i...

A new Stigler Center working paper proposes a mechanism linking legislative gridlock to voters’ support for candidates who hold extreme policy positions. @marcjacob.bsky.social, @bartonelee2.bsky.social (Stigler Affiliate Fellow), @grattonecon.bsky.social (UNSW): www.chicagobooth.edu/-/media/rese...
