Getting Started

I wish we would do an experiment for a few weeks where all NICU visitors and staff wore masks. We are so short-staffed right now because so many people are sick. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we just TRIED masks, and wouldn’t it be great if leadership realized that they WORK?

We could just be reading great books, watching good movies, and eating fruit. Instead we have to survive/fight miserable power hoarders. What a waste of limited time.

It is not sustainable to have people come to work while sick, not require masks, resulting in more people sick, then asking us to work extra shifts, even if sick, leading to more illness, then implementing disciplinary action when we call out sick. It is exhausting. WE NEED MASKS IN HEALTHCARE.

There is a long list of things we do each shift to keep our NICU babies safe, from checking placement of lines & tubes down to the 1/4cm mark, to getting extra help before making the tiniest adjustment in positioning of a 400g baby. But you can come to work with Covid and don’t have to wear a mask.

I was walking through the PICU and overheard two nurses talking about a kiddo with chronic respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Someone was pushing a PPE cart down the hall toward his room. One nurse asked if the kiddo was okay. "Oh, he's fine. He just has covid." She said it so casually.

This may be an unpopular take, but when athletes & celebrities visit kids being treated for cancer and don’t wear masks, it diminishes their efforts. It would send a message of care and show such great leadership if they would mask up. Of course, hospital staff could also lead the way . . .

I appreciate knowing there are people out there (on here) who care. It’s tough to be hopeful right now, but interactions with some of you have helped. Thank you. ❤️

I work in the NICU. Every delivery of a newborn is a wild reminder of the crazy chain of events that has to happen for each of us to be here. And sometimes in the NICU we see what happens when glitches, big or small, occur along the way. It truly is amazing. Put a mask on, please, for the babies.😷
