Is there a Moth Monday? Here's a stunning one from our recent Drakensberg tour in South Africa - Apollo Marbled Emperor (Heniocha apollonia). Although a big focus on that trip is flora, there is so much more to see! #MothsMatter #TeamMoth #MothMonday #bugsky

Now down to just 2 seats left on the butterfly bus....🦋🚌

Good morning. We love our British wildlife & our range of day trips & tours is increasing year on year. One of our most popular days out is in Sussex with @wildkatdahl.bsky.social for Purple Emperor, plus other butterflies & more. It's nearly full so book soon: greenwings.co/our-holidays...

Milky Orchid (Neotinea lactea).

Quality beats quantity every time for us and the experiences we want for guests on our tours. A superb specimen of the Cypriot endemic #orchid Ophrys kotschyi. Taken by a guest on our spring tours. We haven’t tried to count but over a hundred flowers on one clump maybe!

Fascinating plants. And larval host plants to numerous butterflies, such as the False Apollo and Cretan Festoon, which we will shortly see in Greece with our groups.

A little gem from Cyprus, Glaucopsyche paphos - the endemic Paphos Blue. Similar to G. alexis - the Green-underside Blue, but lacks the basal flush associated with that species. Shot of each for comparison. The alexis is from Rhodes, Greece. Both feature on our spring tours to Cyprus & Rhodes.

Good morning & have a good month! Have a Map 🦋 for March!

Growing up in Gloucestershire, I was fortunate to always have the Comma as a familiar friend. I had no idea that, at the time, it was a national rarity. It's so good to see that this species has bucked the trend and has expanded its range significantly since ... and is spectacular in all its stages!

March is now just around the corner & spring is now increasingly on our minds. Here's a photo of a pair of Cyprus Scops Owl (Otus cyprius), endemic to Cyprus. It was taken by a guest on one of our numerous spring tours there. More info on the owl here: birdlifecyprus.org/cyprus-scops...

'Mirror mirror' A pair of fresh Mirror #Orchid (Ophrys speculum) flowers. Not sure it is the fairest of them all, but it is certainly up there & is a joy to see them.

Another #orchid phone pic & it’s the terrific Ophrys tenthredinifera!

Good morning! Have a Fan-lipped Orchid for Thursday (Anacamptis collina). Phone pic as I sometimes go orchid hunting without my camera, it’s nice to travel lighter & it alters my focus to searching more so I can spend my time to cover more ground.

Could there be a more appropriate orchid for Bluesky!? Mirror Orchid (Ophrys speculum) phone-o-graph 📱

It's no wonder that there have been several attempts at introducing the European Map to Britain. It displays extreme seasonal dimorphism, lays its eggs in strings to mimic nettle flowers, and is the only European nymphalid to overwinter as a pupa. And what an underside, from which it gets its name!

Red Admiral lovers should rave about this beauty too. The Forest Admiral (Antanartia delius delius). Widely distributed species, from Sierra Leone to Congo, Uganda and western Tanzania. One we hope to see on our next visit to Ghana in May, as well as on our 2026 trip to Uganda.

🦋 butterfly & moth tours 🦋 View our latest calendar with a wide range of worldwide destinations: greenwings.co/our-holidays... We make a donation to @europebutterfly.bsky.social from each one.

We have room for 1, possibly 2 more people on this years trip... greenwings.co/our-holidays...

Fascinating (as nature always is!). Swallowtail 'step stoning' its way into Europe from North Africa...

Processing a few photos form last year, and was lucky to catch pollination of Common Spotted Orchid, Dactylorhiza fuchsii, by a honey bee (?). Part of a long sequence showing this process. The pollinia from previous flowers is clearly visible on the clypeus (?) in the second photo.

Given that 2024 was an awful year for butterflies, I thought about our most maligned, which is surely the Dingy Skipper (terrible name). But the way it wraps itself around a dead flowerhead in the evening, with its egg changing colour, like that of an Orange-tip, makes me love them nonetheless! 1/2

We’ve landed on Bluesky - just in time for our 90th anniversary! 🎉🦋 The Amateur Entomologists’ Society has shared its passion for insects since 1935, from butterflies to beetles - and even fabulous flies! 🦟 Follow us for news on our events, books, journals & more. 🐞🦗 #amentsoc #Entomology #BugClub

Cool article on reinforcing the Coenonympha oedippus population in Slovenia. Very important to share this practicle experiences! 👇

This beautiful moth caterpillar is a classic 'find the foodplant find the moth/butterfly'. Look for leaves of Honeysuckle with multiple 'pepper pot' or 'shotgun fired' holes in them and that is usually a dead give away for caterpillar noshings! 🐛

I'll be in Ely next month talking about the butterflies of The Fens. What once was, what to see now, and what we could be... Ely Museum, 21st March

Good morning! Let's start the week with a selection of picture postcards from our tours in Northeast Turkey. Names in ALT text We'll be back there in July for more butterflies & flowers. It's a confirmed tour & places are filling up, so do get in touch soon if you'd like to find out more & join us.

Good morning & here’s to a good week ahead! Here’s an Ophrys omegaifera, to 🥊 your way into Monday morning!

Good morning! Here's a collage of Ophrys orchids. All possible (& many more) on the exclusive @greenwingstours.bsky.social orchid tour I set up nearly 15 years ago. 2 places available, hope you can join us! 1-8 April. Donation to @bsbibotany.bsky.social from this & all our botanical tours.

If you love butterflies & moths, here is a fine flutter of folk to follow on Bluesky! 🦋 We continue to add to this list so will share it from time to time. Also, a useful thing for people new to the platform hopefully. go.bsky.app/6DY9XM5

Most butterfly species overwinter as larvae (www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species_phen...). One memorable encounter was finding an overwintering Silver-washed Fritillary larva on its silk pad. I like to think that one of my heroes, Frohawk, would have appreciated this photo (his illustration attached)!

More magic from our Montes Universales butterfly tour in Spain. The Iberian Sooty Copper (Lycaena bleusei).

A montage of images from our unique Montes Universales butterfly tour, which we researched & launched in 2018 and have run annually since, even during the pandemic. That didn't stop us going to enjoy the wealth of butterflies there, and nothing else will either. We can't wait to get back there! 🦋

📢 NEW tour! For 2026 we invite you to join us for a high summer butterfly tour in Slovenia. There'll be a riot of Erebia's & a rich supply of other species, on our exploration of the highlands & lowlands of this beautiful country! For full details please click here... greenwings.co/our-holidays...

The Wood White settles with its wings closed, so how can you tell male from female when the diagnostic black spot, found on the apex of the upperside forewing, cannot be seen? Well, the male has a white patch on the inside of the tip of each antenna that is brown in the female - male & female below!

593 butterfly species & 100's of memories - that sums up our last Peru butterfly tour from late last year. Here are a few, sent to us by our guest Jim. Yes, the butterflies are the main focus, but these trips offer so much more to the naturalist & traveller who wants to experience amazing places.

Illuminating article by Ben, who is also one of our butterfly tour leaders 🦋

Urban botany, Peruvian style 🇵🇪

Butterfly fact 11. Males emerge before females to find the best mates in a phenomenon known as protrandry. Brimstone males are seen first in spring because they are active at slightly lower temperatures, females wake up a few days later. Read more in ‘Butterflies:’ from @chiffchat.bsky.social

Two places available for the @greenwingstours.bsky.social original flagship orchid tour. Join us on my Greek island home for a great week of wildlife, food, culture & sunshine (there's always plenty on the island of Helios!). Message me for info & to discuss, or... greenwings.co/our-holidays...

It is nice to look back sometimes. This quartet of images come from 2014 & the launch year of our exclusive butterfly tour of the Eastern French Pyrenees. We can't wait to get back there with our guests again! 🦋 Names on photos, other than the first, which is the unmistakable Violet Copper.

Between 2014 & 2016, I studied the Chequered Skipper in Scotland. One memorable encounter was watching a larva spin silk between the edges of a leaf. As silk dries, it contracts, and this pulled the leaf edges together to create a protective tube. Amazing! More at www.dispar.org/reference.ph...

Krueper's Small White (Pieris krueperi). We hope to see this species during our tour in partnership with @butterflycorfu.bsky.social this year. Read more about the butterfly & Corfu BC via their excellent website… corfubutterflyconservation.org/species.php?... @europebutterfly.bsky.social

Good morning! Here’s another group of Gargano images. We see far more than orchids, despite them being fantastic & obvious stars of the show! The picnic lunches our guide team Paul & Lois serve are equally fab btw! Week 1 greenwings.co/our-holidays... Week 2 greenwings.co/our-holidays...

One of our best examples of camouflage is found in the Purple Hairstreak larva, which has evolved to look like an oak bud, making them extremely difficult to locate. Early entomologists advised that the easiest way to find larvae was by touch, rather than sight!
