The 80-year presumption that western European countries can rely on US democratic solidarity for security is broken. No country in Europe can go it alone. National Security has transformed discussions on the UK's relationship with the EU in a week.

Amazing work here by Martine Brennan .

Even the cleverest members of the routed establishment have started acknowledging the old older is dead. This isn’t about changing personnel or diplomatic alliances, but suddenly finding our shared assumptions about how the world functions are no longer correct. sluggerotoole.com/2025/02/20/l...

Thought-provoking from the erudite former Alliance executive director @therealgerrylynch.bsky.social on Trump's new world: "My own doubts about the durability of the progressive order started in 2014, & from 2016, even as my rhetoric became angrier as a partisan of the Remainer movement..."

clearly Zelensky won’t do what Trump wants: capitulate or hand over the mineral resources of his country. So he must be blamed for failure , and Trump will have his revenge.

Last week @davidolusoga.bsky.social gave the annual National Humanities Lecture at the University of London. This was a superb account of how public history promotes and communicates academic research beyond HE. David's lecture is now available and is highly recommended bit.ly/3Qd1x5i #skystorians

From 21 February @royalhistsoc.bsky.social will be closing and archiving its X account. From this date all updates from the Society - and its promotion of work by fellow organisations for #history and the humanities - will be via BlueSky. Please encourage colleagues to join us here #skystorians

Fine, but I’d hope & expect that all government networks in major western countries don’t allow the download of unapproved GenAI apps onto connected devices already? If yes, that covers deepseek already If no, that’s really bad & gives rise to big risks beyond deepseek www.wsj.com/tech/ai/lawm...

Looking forward to hearing the responses to this…I think!

Interesting conversation between Stephen Roulston, Martin Brown and host Rory Montgomery comparing the education systems in the northern and southern parts of the island of Ireland. It's part of the ARINS podcast series considering policy issues in Ireland. open.spotify.com/episode/4dzX...

🚨 2 announcements from Stormont to help our environment & nature: ➡️ new fund to support Nature Recovery environmental projects with grants starting at £50k from @daera_ni ➡️ £580k for pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along 1.2km of Stranmillis Embankment @deptinfra

"Successful negotiations require commitment and tenacity. The UK appears to have neither. Six months after taking power, the government still hasn’t built on the meagre proposals in its manifesto... The EU waits..." - @anandmenon.bsky.social & @jreland.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Thank you to the constituent who contacted me about this tree in Rosetta, on the Ormeau. I’m working with others to make sure it is attended to as soon as it is safe to do so. Things are still pretty wild out there so please take care and stay home.

Someone misunderstood the definition of cat burglar.

Great turnout at PRONI to hear Prof. Marie Coleman and @sjamcbride.bsky.social on Secrets from the Files 2003

Members will be sad to learn about the death of our former colleague, Dr Richard Middleton, who was appointed to Queen’s in 1974 and retired as Reader in American History in 2006. Richard was well known for his dry wit and cheerful acceptance of collegial responsibilities.

@neilhegarty.bsky.social Thanks for the follow back Neil, that post about the snow made me smile on a very chilly afternoon

Good to see the @irishtimes.bsky.social raise this issue; their analysis is pretty spot-on. I would only add that there has also been a neglect of local archives (where lack of an archivist can mean no access for researchers) and semi-state bodies. These are vital. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/edit...

Some 7 yrs 7 months after I signed on the dotted line at Trinity Mirror and penned a few yarns for @belfastlive.co.uk @irishmirror.bsky.social and so on... I've filed my last piece as a staff reporter. What a high to set sail on after 2024's wins & many years with a great team. See you all in 2025😉

Many of the Stormont files declassified today are exceptionally bland. Gone are the candid views, blunt assessments and granular detail of decades past. This is likely due to two factors: The growing use of email and the looming Freedom of Information Act.

@pipmcgowan.bsky.social think you are spot on about the weather - just seen this on Met Office

@pipmcgowan.bsky.social Glad to see you on this channel too! Hope Christmas went well for you, our lights went up late thanks to Darragh - no more named storms please!

With previous technologies, younger people launching startups had big advantages as they were outside firms & early users In AI, they may not. Why? Because AIs produce good-enough work that novices can’t tell how useful they are or (as we found in our paper) risks & how AI fits into organizations.

Wee bump for this. New blog post coming next Saturday, which hopefully builds on recent great work by @edwardburke.bsky.social and which examines the fraught and sometimes violent relationship between unionists and the British Army: "The Specials had been firing on the troops" Part 1.

@dedalusdenaries.bsky.social Some pics from excellent event at Seamus Heaney Centre at QUB celebrating his craft at Christmas - even when Belfast traffic stutters, its creative heart beats strong and loud

okay how did it take me THREE YEARS at this university to find out there is a courtyard where the now defunct Byzantine Studies department had themselves immortalised in mural form??

'The problem is, the Dept for Infrastructure has been injecting cars into every vein, artery and capillary of Belfast for over 60 years. ...The dosage increases each year. There are now around 1.3 million cars distributed among 1.9 million people – the highest figure in the UK.'
