being a person everyone suddenly wants to feature in their articles not because of all the work you've done but because all your work is in ruins

1/ The Government’s proposed plans on copyright and AI will weaken writers' copyright protections and allow AI companies to use creators' work without permission or payment. But we are fighting back!

In the post-truth world, something needs to be repeated constantly: russian occupation is not peace, it is a death camp. More than 440 graves were found in the forest of Izyum in 2022 after its liberation.

🇬🇧🇺🇦 Rock, Paper, Scissors won the #BAFTA2025 Award for Best Short Film. The film, directed by Franz Böhm, is based on real events during the Russian invasion and tells the story of a surgeon who operates on the wounded in a shelter and his son Ivan, who goes to the battlefield to defend Ukraine.

🇺🇦 In our interview, @timothysnyder.bsky.social warns: "We have a failure of imagination of how bad things could get for us if Ukraine were to be defeated (...) We live on borrowed time, borrowed from the Ukrainians (who) are paying for it with their lives" Full video 🔗👇 www.rfi.fr/en/video/202...

Just published, Victoria Amelina's stories about the Ukraine invasion before she too became a war story; her life tragically lost in the terrible conflict. Described by Philippe Sands as "rare, powerful and affecting". In her memory we stand in solidarity with Ukraine.

Sadly, a hearing to review Pinar Selek's fifth prison sentence due to take place today was postponed until 25th April. We offer her our continued support and solidarity. Free Pinar Silek.

The rule of law and democratic has been distorted in the U S so no longer recognizable if not lost.

Last night on Holocaust Memorial Day, HAI honoured the victims & their families. My heartfelt thanks to Fintan O’Toole @fotoole.bsky.social for his skilful examination of the Holocaust & antisemitism through a lens of Irish history & literature. View: bit.ly/3PPAc9g Our conversation starts 36.30

I wish Primo Levi was read and discussed more - especially The Drowned and the Saved, which unsparingly examines the layers of human complicity in atrocities like Auschwitz. A Divina Commedia for the 20th century (and ours).

Our statement regarding the Holocaust Memorial Commemoration at The Mansion House in Dublin yesterday. Please note: We are not the organisers of this event.

This is what resistance looks like...with words of compassion, with truths spoken. with cris de coeurs and with gentle but impassioned wisdom. Now is the time to resist. I resist.

As it should be

Really interesting interview

An investigation we ran last week catalogued atrocities in Sudan including paramilitary RSF fighters executing unarmed captives. More evidence of RSF executions was published today by Sudan War Monitor (end of article) 👇 sudanwarmonitor.com/p/saf-suffer...

#FreeMahvash I stand in solidarity with Mahvash Sabet. The Iranian authorities must not imprison this wonderful poet because of her Baha'i religious beliefs. We support Mahvash in Ireland and around the world.

'FRAGMENTS', new novel that is sister-novel to 'A Requiem For Hania', will be published on 4 March (hardback), paperback on 6 May. A book I'm very proud of: moving, painful, thoughtful.

Greatly looking forward to our event on Holocaust Memorial Day. Fintan O'Toole @fotoole.bsky.social in conversation with HAI founder, Oliver Sears, chaired by Zuleika Rodgers. Why Talk About the Holocaust? Beyond Auschwitz: 80 years of remembrance. Book: www.holocaustawarenessireland.com/ourevents

Special gifts from friends from Ukraine. Brilliant writing, and their kindness knows no bounds. May they find peace and hope in this new year. To you, my many friends.

Highlighting arrest of journalist Cecilia Sala by Iranian authorities. An excellent journalist. Cecilia should be released immediately. Charges have not been explained and Italian embassy given little or no access. Please elevate. @irishpen.bsky.social

These folks are great and so very important.

Wonderful interview in Craft Magazine with Ukrainian poet Iya Kiva. Thoughtful and thought provoking. English version craftmagazine.net/en/iya-kiva/

Stories need to be told. Voices need to be heard. Words need to be spoken. www.theguardian.com/world/2024/d...

This poem is by my friend Ostap Slyvynsky, vice president of PEN Ukraine. Reading is by Jill Navarre from India. Watch the video: wonderful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3HP...

Narges Mohammadi had been temporarily released from prison in Iran. May it be permanent. She is a true role model. We know she has been ill. So very pleased to hear this. May she be followed by so many others.

Hand carried to me from U.S., Ostap Slyvynsky's wonderful A UKRAINIAN DICTIONARY OF WAR. Tearing at heartstrings. Buy this book, support so many who bear witness and survive.

Vraiment formidable. Magnifique...

This defacement of a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust is one of countless such acts of vandalism which defames Jewish victims, their families and the Holocaust narrative, exonerating Nazi perpetrators, justifying antisemitism and blaming Jews for the murder of Palestinians.

This young journalist from Afghanistan has been named young journalist of the year. Her name is not provided for her safety. www.thomsonfoundation.org/latest/afgha... Brilliant....

I have just read SPEAK SILENCE by Kim Echlin. A painful, necessary read. It is important to remember. I highly recommend this read, although it is not easy. But eyes and thoughts particularly for me in context of this fine work on Ukraine, Sudan, so many dark places, important.

Wonderful Kurdish poet Ilhan Sami Comak finally freed after almost 31 years imprisoned. Arrested as student in 1994. In book of poetry ed. by @carolinestockford PEN Norway: 'If I have managed...the endless possibilities of life... know that this creative act was poetry. Welcome home, Sami! THRILLED!

@margaretatwood.bsky.social wrote a letter to imprisoned #JimmyLai via #PENInternational for Day of the Imprisoned Writer (15 Nov). Read it and other letters to imprisoned writers! www.pen-international.org/our-campaign...

Blue sky sauna on a snowy day up our mountain--way to put the world aside.

How many of these do we have?

World may be falling apart but here a bit of peace. Needed.

For new contacts at a platform hopefully less filled with vitriol, or so it's hoped: Sister-novel 'Fragments' coming in 2025. Do read Hania and reach out if you have:
