Another captivating Lincoln book is Ted Widmer's "Lincoln on the Verge," about the President-elect's circuitous, 13-day whistle-stop tour from Springfield to DC in Feb. 1861 amid death threats (Baltimore Plot). I'd watch any movie or series that sprang from this book! Just a few riveting scenes: 🧵

160 years ago this morning (April 26, 1865), the 12-day manhunt for Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth ended. 🧵

Ex-Rep. George Santos (R-NY) sentenced to 7 years & 3 months. In December 2023, Santos became just 3rd House member since the Civil War to be expelled -- and 1st since Jim Traficant in 2002, when he was sentenced to 8 years for accepting bribes and kickbacks. history.house.gov/Institution/...

Indulged my love of congressional history with this story about new Republican Reps. Tom Barrett (Mich) & Nick Begich (Alaska), respectively the great-grandson & grandson of late former House Democrats. What they've learned about congressional ancestors they never knew: news.bgov.com/bloomberg-go...

Congratulations from this battle-scarred veteran of presidential vote-by-district calculations. An authoritative project. Grateful to the many state and local election officials who have provided assistance over the years.

Ahead of 2004 Illinois US Senate election, Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R) announced retirement in April 2003 (comparable to Durbin this cycle) Tribune then noted Democrats who had lined up to oppose Fitzgerald included "state Sen. Barack Obama of Chicago" (who was not the early front-runner)

"Abraham Lincoln’s entry to Ford’s Theatre at 8:30 P.M. on April 14, 1865, was majestic in its simplicity. He arrived with no entourage, no armed guards, and no announcement to the crowd." - James L. Swanson's excellent "Manhunt"

#LASEN: Ex-Rep. John Fleming (R), seeking to oust Sen. Bill Cassidy in 2026 GOP primary, loaned $2 million to his campaign per FEC filing: docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/…

#WI03: Emily Berge (D), Eau Claire City Council President, filed papers with FEC to seek Wisconsin's 3rd District held by Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R): docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/form... Van Orden re-elected by <3 percentage points in 2024 over Rebecca Cooke (D), who's running again

#VAGOV: Abigail Spanberger (D) vs Winsome Earle-Sears (R) will be 11th governor's election in history with women as both major-party nominees, according to @cawp-ru.bsky.social: cawp.rutgers.edu/election-wat... I noted that & wrote about the first 10 for @bgov.com: bgov.com/next/news/SU...

A yes vote from Oz's 2022 Senate Republican primary opponent (Dave McCormick) and a no vote from his 2022 Senate general election opponent (John Fetterman)
