One of these recent cold days, my dog kept wanting to go outside, then disappearing into the woods. We figured maybe she was having stomach issues. Then, the fifth time, after dark, she goes into the woods again... and emerges with the ball she had been searching for all day.

I took my Hok skis into a wildlife area and decided the best way to describe them is "snowshoes that glide." They're very useful for traveling on ungroomed trails, letting me keep up a regular walking speed despite four inches of snow, and not having to lift heavy snowshoes with every step.

The muskrats have been out quite a bit in our stream. They always make me think of the story of Turtle Island, after the great flood when all others tried to dive deep to grab dirt to start growing an island it was only the muskrat who was able to do it. You are never too small to do great things.

I finished the fifth book in the Aubrey/Maturin/Master/Commander series, it might be the best one yet. Chasing enemies through the roaring forties latitudes near Antarctica, subterfuge and espionage, and plenty of dialogue "approaching wit." Seriously the most fun you can have on the page.

A good friend brought these soapstone figurines back from the Arctic for my wife and I when we got married. Hand carved by an unknown Inuit artist. Buried in a box when we moved more than eight years ago, lost to all but memory, just excavated from the depths of long-term storage.

I saw the Bob Dylan movie and enjoyed every minute. It illustrates his prolific songwriting of that era, but doesn't really document it. Every five minutes he plays another earth-shattering new song and somebody stares at him looking flabbergasted. Then it moves on.

Yesterday was a lovely, albeit cold, day for some winter fieldwork! Hiked in to one of our stocked trout lakes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to gauge recent angler activity. Fresh snow made it tough, but it looks like folks are doing some fishing! 🐟🐠🎣
