I take one, one, one 'cause you left me And two, two, two for my family And three, three, three for my heartache And four, four, four for my headaches And five, five, five for my lonely

Came across this beautiful snow engraving made by a mouse of some sort, harvesting the fallen seeds from a bush.

I like the credit listing for Tom Waits for his guest appearance on Sparklehorse's album "It's a Wonderful Life"

One of these recent cold days, my dog kept wanting to go outside, then disappearing into the woods. We figured maybe she was having stomach issues. Then, the fifth time, after dark, she goes into the woods again... and emerges with the ball she had been searching for all day.

As president, I will give every American binoculars, because we the people are very short-sighted

This guy was a manidoo (spirit) who lived a very long time and influenced a lot of history. He shot a soldier in 1857, escaped the local sheriff's house, and swam the St. Croix to safety (or something). Seventy years later, he gave an entirely unrepentant interview about the event.

I took my Hok skis into a wildlife area and decided the best way to describe them is "snowshoes that glide." They're very useful for traveling on ungroomed trails, letting me keep up a regular walking speed despite four inches of snow, and not having to lift heavy snowshoes with every step.

The muskrats have been out quite a bit in our stream. They always make me think of the story of Turtle Island, after the great flood when all others tried to dive deep to grab dirt to start growing an island it was only the muskrat who was able to do it. You are never too small to do great things.

I just realized if last week's plane crash was caused by DEI, every previous plane crash must have been caused by white men.

I'm quoted in Mary Divine's article from yesterday's Pioneer Press about the new wildlife area Keystone Woods and the short-eared owls I was lucky enough to see there last fall.

Bowling in Bayport followed by a birthday party in Hudson gave me the change to take a shortcut across the St. Croix River on the ice road.

My beautiful and brilliant wife helped organize a poetry reading and open mic at our local last night, which was wonderful. At least half the readers I saw were people indigenous to this land, and everyone felt safe to bare some real soul stuff.

Walked among 250-year-old white pines recently, the oldest known trees in the southern half of Minnesota. Started growing at the time of the American Revolution. Some as tall as 120 feet, they are giant sentinels of deep time.

I know you hate this advice. I know you hear it all the time, but for gods sake you need to be calling your congressperson. Now. Today. If you have a GOP representative, you need to call and ask if they approve of stripping congress of its constitutional authority. If they like being powerless.

The AI industry getting sucker punched was an unexpected joy, even if it's because of devious Communist plots.

They did this in Wisconsin in 2023 and developers and realtors made sure it limited public opposition to the point it's gone to the state Supreme Court to decide if violating the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act is enough to stop luxury apartments.

I don't usually do these things but I have a lot of photos of a lot of bridges!

A birch bark canoe made by Ojibwe people in western Wisconsin, found in the 1880s.

"I stared at the map and got annoyed and cussed it." - William Least Heat-Moon, PrairyErth, 1991

Pardoning the insurrectionists, rioters, and other Jan. 6 rabble has to be top 5 undemocratic things in American history, maybe after Native American genocide, slavery, Jim Crow, and Japanese internment camps.

I'm all for free speech but irony should be illegal before age 16.

Budde served 18 years as the rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. #localangle

New bird terminology just dropped, shall be only accepted name forthwith.

I'm just going to work today, read and write and whatnot. It's an awful sad thing that is happening and still doesn't make any sense to me.

I finished the fifth book in the Aubrey/Maturin/Master/Commander series, it might be the best one yet. Chasing enemies through the roaring forties latitudes near Antarctica, subterfuge and espionage, and plenty of dialogue "approaching wit." Seriously the most fun you can have on the page.

A good friend brought these soapstone figurines back from the Arctic for my wife and I when we got married. Hand carved by an unknown Inuit artist. Buried in a box when we moved more than eight years ago, lost to all but memory, just excavated from the depths of long-term storage.

I saw the Bob Dylan movie and enjoyed every minute. It illustrates his prolific songwriting of that era, but doesn't really document it. Every five minutes he plays another earth-shattering new song and somebody stares at him looking flabbergasted. Then it moves on.

Starting the immigration raids in liberal cities is also a good way to guarantee large, angry protests which can be used to justify police violence.

Lutefisk dinner at Christ Lutheran Church in Marine on St. Croix today. Just Swedes doing Swede things.

I had the unfortunate experience of hearing Ron Johnson on the radio explaining why the fires are California's fault and federal aid should be withheld unless they destroy the ecosystem. Based on Bluesky, seems his colleagues are pounding other media with the same message this morning. Ugly.

Yesterday was a lovely, albeit cold, day for some winter fieldwork! Hiked in to one of our stocked trout lakes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to gauge recent angler activity. Fresh snow made it tough, but it looks like folks are doing some fishing! 🐟🐠🎣

"A Territory, indeed, which gives origin to the Mississippi, and furnishes more than a thousand miles of her banks, on her right and left, can neither be small nor obscure. Such is Minnesota." - Henry Schoolcraft (1793-1864)

I recently read firsthand accounts of the Hinckley Fire of 1894: "...The wind raised; there seemed to be an explosion, and in an instant the whole train, even to the ties under the engine were ignited, all in less time than a man could snap his finger." - Heroic train engineer James Root
