Wouldn't an OSTP director wanting to “reinforce scientific rigor and excellence,” consider it a golden opportunity to inherit a scientific integrity project to build on? Instead, we got a golden facade, behind which lurk threats to science in federal spaces altogether. blog.ucs.org/gretchen-gol...

1. Trump cuts to science have massive impacts and deserve mainstream attention like this. 2. Health research focused on understudied populations conducted under the Biden Administration is in no way equivalent to the political interference in research happening now. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/26/p...

The richness of President Trump's Science Advisor accusing others of politicizing science as they gut Federal science agencies and target politically contentious science topics—like climate, equity, and vaccines—with surgical precision is really quite something. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Honored to be named to @bloomberg.com Ones to Watch List alongside an all-star set of folks announced today, and looking forward to the Bloomberg Green Seattle event next month. Let's get to work. 🧪⚡🌍 www.bloomberg.com/features/202...

Kings don't belong in America, y'all. #nokings

Seeing all the "last day" posts from EPA staff today is heartbreaking. You deserved so much better, my friends.

I was honored to give the @societyforepi.bsky.social #SER2025 plenary today about what it means to be a scientist in this challenging time. I'm energized from conversations with the epidemiology community and all we can collectively do to action.

"Behind the rhetoric of scientific values like transparency, reproducibility, and integrity, the [executive] order disrupts longstanding process and policy in US science and undermines the principles it claims to uphold." - @gretchentg.bsky.social & @jbd-phd.bsky.social www.bmj.com/content/389/...

"If we are to achieve a true gold standard, we need federal leadership that supports, not dismantles, the U.S. science enterprise and whose actions follow a bold positive vision for the future of science." - Jacob Carter of @scilight.bsky.social & @gretchentg.bsky.social of @ucs.org

National Institutes of Health employees have had enough. Impressive showing of more than 300 staffers ask leaders to "return the NIH to its mission and abandon the strategy of using NIH as a tool for achieving political goals" in their Bethesda Declaration. www.cnn.com/2025/06/09/h...

The Trump administration recently released the deceptively named “Gold Standard Science” executive order. The order disrupts longstanding process and policy in US science and undermines the principles it claims to uphold, @ucs.org www.bmj.com/content/389/...

The Gold Standard Science Executive Order should set off alarm bells for anyone who cares about evidence-based policy. The EO resurrects efforts to restrict the science that can be used in agency decisions. More from me and @jbd-phd.bsky.social in a new @bmj.com Opinion: www.bmj.com/content/389/...

Our Federal agencies are facing dire threats. The cuts to staffing and programs across the government has already been devastating. And now Congress is working towards further destruction. Today I spoke at a rally outside NOAA. Keep up the pressure. #SaveNOAA. Save Science. Save Lives.

"The order, issued May 23, outlines new rules that put political appointees in charge of upholding high scientific-research standards...this executive order is setting up the permission structure to throw out valid scientific information, @gretchentg.bsky.social says." cen.acs.org/policy/Gold-...

The order “steamrolls” longstanding efforts to create a buffer between science and politics, says @gretchentg.bsky.social , who helped to develop scientific-integrity policies under Biden that the new order revokes.

Great to see the scientific community mobilize immediately on this Gold Standard Science EO. This is the opening act. Expect more from this Administration under this directive. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

As the US prepares to spend as much as $38 billion to produce hundreds of new explosive cores, called plutonium pits, to arm new nuclear weapons, our new analysis argues new pits aren’t necessary to maintain the existing US nuclear arsenal. Read our report: act.ucsusa.org/4kZ4X9p

Great to see these @standupforscience.bsky.social "Teach Ins" happening across the country. actionnetwork.org/event_campai...

Last week, President Trump issued an EO directing federal agencies to scrap Scientific Integrity Policies & undermine science-based decision making. ”The Trump administration intends to weaponize science to undermine public health and safety protections," said UCS President @gretchentg.bsky.social.

While couched in science-supporting rhetoric, this EO reveals how the administration intends to weaponize science to undermine public health and safety protections. We've seen these moves before. www.ucs.org/about/news/e...

There are presumably dozens of stories like this from across government: Mission-critical labs and components that DOGE /Trump officials didn't bother to learn about (or intentionally targeted) where the public will be harmed if they're eliminated.

If we can't do the science showing harm of pollution, we can't protect people from it. "Virtually all of the air-quality standards that we have today are built around evidence from this exposure facility.” www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Since Lincoln was President, the National Academies has provided unbiased expert guidance to the government. I’ve had the privilege of serving on multiple committees, and the excellent staff takes their responsibility to help the country very seriously. What are we doing here?

If true, this is a deeply concerning move from the Trump EPA. There is no meaningful path to reducing US carbon emissions without limiting greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas-fired power plants--the largest domestic stationary source of GHGs. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/24/c...

opening this, seeing 'rcp 8.5', immediately closing the tab and staring at the wall quietly for about 10 minutes or so

The Trump administration just dropped an executive order, "Restoring Gold Standard Science" and there's lots to unpack. This EO reveals more about how the Administration will approach scientific integrity and science in regulatory contexts. Some initial thoughts. 🧵 www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

This is not how we do science. It is challenging to even articulate the scale and severity of disruption to the US science enterprise happening in real time. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Dick Garwin, eminent physicist and member of the @ucs.org board of directors. www.ucs.org/about/news/r...

Science Magazine gets it wrong. 🧵

Thank you for your leadership and your wisdom in this moment, @alondra.bsky.social.

The Trump administration is dismantling American science on multiple fronts. One of those fronts I’m deeply concerned about is the attacks on the Federal science advice. But this is an area where the scientific community can do something about it. 🧵 secure.ucs.org/a/2025-05-22...

We were learning how new technologies could improve mobility for communities. We were gaining insights on what transportation investments work best where. We were asking research questions that hadn't been asked before. Wild to see it all reduced to "woke research."

This budget is laced with racist, anti-science, petty, and cruel language that should be beneath the president. If enacted, it would leave communities at the mercy of devastating climate impacts and deprived of public protections that save lives and support the economy. www.ucs.org/about/news/c...
