On this day in 1980, the US hockey team defeated America's future ideological bestie and strategic ally in "The Miracle on Ice"

Authoritarian leader cult alert

Was walking my dogs at sunrise this morning, stunned by the beauty of the world while being crushed by sadness over what we are doing to it. The dissonance was profound.

This is awesome.

Nice mineral-rich country you have there, it'd be a shame if something happened to it. American thuggery. www.reuters.com/business/us-...

Buzz's Minute Men will be much more effective armed.

On this day in 1916, the Battle of Verdun kicked off in France, the longest single battle of the War to End All Wars. 10 months later, it ground to a halt, at a cost of 700k casualties including 300k dead, and the obliteration of 9 villages and surrounding areas. So it goes.

This has never been in doubt since 2015.

It's only been one month 😳

When you've already ensured the end of democracy and want to retire on top

On this day in 1847, the surviving members of the ill-fated Donner party were rescued from the Sierra Nevadas, but not before half the group had starved to death. Because listening to ignorant authority doling out bad advice has consequences, as we are about to find out once RFK Jr gets warmed up.

Combine the 43% of Americans who are susceptible to authoritarianism with a strident 24/7 right wing disinformation machine and an apathetic center voting bloc, it's easy to see how America gave up democracy. Question is, can we get it back. www.prri.org/press-releas...

When W.W. Jacobs wrote The Monkey's Paw, he predicted the internet

The larger point here is that they are busy making their lies the official record. Before too long, *we* will be the conspiracy theory crackpots.

Watching documentaries about events leading up to World War II hits very differently now than even a month ago. Given the amount of information available, and the bright people who have been pulling the fire alarm for years now, it's absolutely mind blowing that we have chosen this path again.

It appears that in recent years, enough people have TL;DR'd the unpleasant little corporal with the funny moustache.

When my dad told me decades ago that after a while, enough people will say the holocaust never existed to make a difference, I assumed he was referring specifically to the Third Reich's atrocities, not the wholesale reimagining of truth in the first part of the 21st century.

Right before I get curb stomped by a jackboot, I'm going to be giving special thanks to the ignorant, gullible, bigoted, and/or greedy assholes who voted for this.
