Managed a few garden jobs before a hailstorm stopped play. Sowed early purple broccoli, kalettes and brussels sprouts. Planted some more onion sets into modules. Sowed a little terracotta pot with mixed spicy salad leaves. Potted up ten bare root eryngium flowers (sea holly) and a dwarf fig tree.

My sweet peppers finally woke up (right) chillies about a week ahead (left).

Been shuffling spring bulbs pots around at home.

Trying again with terracotta strawberry planters, going with bottles down the middle, bottoms chopped off, cuts in sides. Makes it easier to direct water to the roots of the bottom most plants which otherwise dry out despite your best efforts in high summer.

Sweet peppers and chillies sown into the propagator.

Managed to sieve the shite out of Westland's John Innes no 1 young plant compost to make some useable seed compost. Really need to get me some willy worms (wormcasts) to mix in for the next batches. #compost

Heated propagator filled and back in business. MrsGrow is hosting book club tonight so I'm not allowed it on the kitchen windowsill (whatever would her guests think?) Needs 24 hours to warm up anyway before I sow peppers and chillies 🫑🌶

In the greenhouse at Tilgate. Great Grandad George at the back. His sons Ted and Jack (my Grandad) left.

To celebrate finishing 6 months of chemotherapy treatment and making it to my 48th birthday, we are having a little get-together at lunchtime on Sunday March 9th. It'll be in a local hall here near Dorking. Social media friends welcome to DM me to get themselves invited 👍

I've decided to try my newest strawberry plants in vertical pockets and planters this year, on the warm south facing wall of the house. Had no luck at all last year with the greenhouse or raised beds due to low temperatures. Trialling felt pockets (x2) and plastic troughs (x4). On clearance at B&Q.

Beautiful day. Still not cleaned the windows.

Great prices on onion sets in this morning's T&M offers. Peonies, Agapanthus, Eryngium and Oriental poppy collections quite decent value too. www.thompson-morgan.com/newsletter-s...

25% off everything at Sarah Raven, including the items in their flash seed sale. Had to place a little order.

Goodbye chemo suite. I hope I never see you again! Last one done. Now to get through my last week of post chemo fatigue and avoid any more germs. Normal life from March 1st.

Catching up on Monty Don's British Gardens. How beautiful is Wollerton Old Hall Garden? Must visit one day. Probably on a return trip to Bodnant.

You have to wonder if there'd be any public gardens at all in Britain without volunteers. #BritishGardens

Must be time for Monty Don and his journey around Little Britain again. #BritishGardens

Where do you go? I wanna know. The allotment mostly, since you asked. #TOTP

Flash seed sale at T&M, 89p a pack. Good prices on things like wildflower mixes. Pumpkins, chillies etc. www.thompson-morgan.com/newsletter-s...

Wondering if the bag of Melcourt compost I bought yesterday at the garden centre will have defrosted yet in the greenhouse.

Another blood test complete. Reward of £2 grasses and nepeta.

It's Sunday, it's 8pm so it must be #WildFlowerHour! Please share pix of wild or naturalised plants you spotted in bloom this week across Britain & Ireland. Mystery plant? Use #WildFlowerID to summon help from friendly @wildflowerhour.bsky.social botanists!

Just spent 3 hours cleaning up my growlikegrandad Instagram follower list, amazed to see so many accounts gone inactive. If you're on Instagram and you ARE actually publishing photos of flowers, allotments, giant pumpkins etc. follow me so I can find you and follow you back 👍

Wassail! "Goodbye cancer!" was my chosen offering to the open circle this year, "Giant pumpkins!" a bit lower down the priority order. From the heart, blessed be.

Amaryllis handover on the left, stem two about to take over blooming. Giving it some sunshine before it returns to the fireplace. Others catching up. Another still to plant (gifted at Christmas).

Monty in Edinburgh vs. MrsGrow in Edinburgh #BritishGardens

Took our honeymoon in Scotland in January 2007 (wedding anniversary on Monday), toured four castles from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, Dingwall to Fintree (via the Cairngormes). Was quite foolhardy to plan a drive during the winter but it was beautiful. #BritishGardens

Now THAT is a walled garden. Free access to seaweed! #BritishGardens

Took me back to Tom Baker narrating Little Britain there Monty. "Britain, Britain, Britain. We've had running water for over ten years, we have a tunnel connecting us to Peru, and we invented the cat." 😂 #BritishGardens

Time for the all new #MontyDonsBritishGardens - presume we can agree to use the #BritishGardens hashtag for ease?

Seems like I was lucky to develop an obsession with UK garage in 1997 and escape the year's #totp offerings in favour of underground white label vinyl mixed by dodgy metal case carting DJs.

Don't remember this awful track at all. Out Here on the way out I guess. #totp

A nice surprise - Monty Don's Around the World in 80 Gardens is on BBC2 now and presumably available on BBC iplayer again. One of his best.

2025 and the first amaryllis to bloom is nearly fully open.

Merry New Year.

Christmas with my sister involved long hours playing the board game Wingspan. A sort of birds meets monopoly game which was a lot more fun than it at first appeared.

What I thought was a quick garden side job to rehome some bushy lavender, turned into 2 hours digging out brambles and nettles, rebuilding a rotten raised bed, and pruning and manuring the trellis grape vines. All assisted by MrsGrow for heavy lifting as one of my arm veins is inflamed. #gardening

£18.99 for 50 litres of manure at B&Q. What's so special about it? You'd have to have shit for brains to be that stupid.

Who told Steve Coogan he was able to do an impression of Roger Moore? This BBC documentary is bizarre, like it's being narrated by Alan Partridge.
