I have a new book out today, the Portable Feminist Reader. I hope you check it out. audacity.substack.com/p/new-book-o...

"Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for." – Seamus Heaney

From a novelist, but relevant to historical writing on any sort: “So I read enough to understand the context in a general way, and then I started writing. The writing informed my research, and then the research informed my writing. I would shift between the two activities constantly.”

So it has taken a bit longer than promised but the Oxford Illustrated History of the United States is about to go into production! Watch this space for pub date and possible (shameless) semiquincentennial branding. And massive thanks to the stellar contributors who have been incredible to work with

When talking with folks about implications of threats to government programs, it makes sense to know what Medicaid is called in your state.

Watching and listening to a book talk by Kim Williams-Pulfer on “philanthropy from below,” with Bahamian life and organizations as the case. The concept recognizes how enslaved people and their descendants developed practices of living and responding within civil society with a sense of agency.

Happy Anniversary to the covid emergency declaration!

thing about community is you got to just make it with whoever's around. those are your people. right there. you're already in it. keep retying those bonds. send a letter. a text. make a call. a meal. yes, there's always room for another. say hello when you sit down on the bus. don't wait

This essay by Peter Coviello--on what it is that the humanities, public higher ed, unions, and people can do--is what's giving me life today www.nplusonemag.com/online-only/...

Could Roosevelt have stopped the Blitz by cutting off Churchill from Lend-Lease? Our experts weigh in.

"We say we can get more done at home — which is very likely true — but academic work is not just about getting things done. A college is meant to foster a distinct way of life. It aims to live in accord with values that are rare elsewhere: collegiality and the free exchange of ideas."

Finished inking in the words in my first-ever acrylic on canvas. These words are the ones being scrubbed from fed'l websites & being used to flag/deny NSF and FEMA funding. May we all be keepers of the Words.

Are you one of the many federal employees wondering what the hell is going on with those stupid bullet point emails? Well don’t worry. We’ve got all the guidance you could possibly need right here.

Teen Vogue and Wired becoming the most reliable publications was not on my 2025 bingo card, but here we are.

A student at IU Bloomington opposes a bill that'd ban student IDs for voting: "At best, it's a misguided policy that is building on anti-student sentiment; at worst, it's a targeted form of voter suppression to try to make it harder for students to vote." boltsmag.org/indiana...

One way I dealt with going online (almost) 5 yrs ago was to have this plaque & sword on the wall behind me. And to dye my hair--usually a blue that I called "comic-book blue-black." The pandemic isn't over. But I have retired & I am moving on to other colors. Ruby Red for the next period of time!

In other news, Ramadan is starting on Saturday. Be kind to your Muslims friends who are fasting. If you think we're ignoring you around 5 pm, just know we're in a Ramadan Hibernation Zone preparing for sunset when we can eat and drink.

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.
