over a decade ago my boss figured out if we're having a deep discussion about file systems and we've come to an impasse, he can just suggest we use AFS and my brain will immediately short-circuit.

Spinning drives do have lower temp thresholds. Often best to let them slowly come back to normal ambient before attempting to spin back up. Lubricants can get too viscous. I’ve seen it after power outages where datacenter cooling remained on (so temps plummeted in the face of no heat output).

Thanking the horse, that killed me…

I keep toying with the idea of draid but the full stripe file size limitation has me concerned but also… a quarter PB usable so….

I seem to recall the Dell 1950s were some of the first “rapid rails” to be fair.

The weaving of a Pentium is so accurate that I could label the functional blocks of the processor. Amusingly, the gallery hung the weaving backward. The wrong side is facing outward, so the chip is mirrored. I had to flip the image to make this diagram. 2/n

Admining Linux pays my bills, my fingers are most comfortable in macOS, I game on windows. I don’t think I’d be cool with any deviation of those except on the steam deck.

Switching from (i think) BOTW to RDR2 was always the worst. Go to mount your horse and punch them in the face instead.

For crab mac my wife does Colby jack and havarti with an extra spice blend on top. She swears her green chili was pepper jack and cheddar but I don’t believe her. I think she still did colby and not cheddar…

But at the same time, we’re going to be coming for colo power way sooner than i think most people in my space understand. We simply can’t keep pace with the power density curve. We will need hyperscalers in some fashion since they’re WAY ahead of us grabbing up power real estate.

And my answer goes right to your point, doesn’t it? What private vendor wants to deal with that view?

I mean, to vendor lock where they can?… Obviously super cynical but the IRI panel at PDSW was too short. “Nvidia is excited to help where they can in this effort with [our proprietary edge libraries]” was telling. The biggest risk I see there surrounds any data federation getting vendor locked.

Someone at a roadmap meeting today finally called out a vendor, “this is an HPC conference, we’re not here to talk about AI as a primary workload!” The hyperscaler cash cow is all a lot of these folks are seeing right now.

Whatever happens I’m dying to see scenes from The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon (a la Invitation to Love in Twin Peaks).

Stop. Pooping.

I’m told that’s not the only storage vendor to have brought a dumpster to the conference. Truck! I mean truck!

I normally don’t have anything to do the first day! Finally decided to do PDSW this year and bam! Huge line

I think the real event test is going to be (as sports twitter is slowly showing up here) a major championship game series.

The team handled the great Brazilian influx a couple months ago, I gotta imagine SC isnt quite the same scale.
comment in response to post
My favorite task every SC is triple checking every meeting I’ve scheduled to make sure the vendor and myself have the same timezone.
