The problem is it has been filled with MAGA loyalists who are racist and are willing to break laws to push a fascist agenda. In essence, it has turned into a sort of modern day Gestapo. Trump has weaponized ICE to push a white nationlist agenda. That is very bad and we can't ignore that fact.

Kevin is right. This is a battle of optics as well. If all people see are foreign flags being waved in a crowd of protestors then it gives fuel to the administration's propaganda. If all people see are American flags then the administration has nothing left to hide behind.

In addition all the core components are open source. For that modest monthly fee, you could have hundreds of relays operated by different people or organizations and just ask for small donations to maintain the infrastructure.

I don't think you understand what an open source Federated protocol means. It doesn't need to be a business to survive. Anyone can host the infrastructure necessary to operate. With the recent changes to the relay infrastructure, you can host a server for around $80/mo.

The problem of social media is more complicated than that. Enshittification causes divisiveness because engagement around topics such as hate are much higher. So algorithms are tweaked to bring more of that to the forefront even though it is a minority on a platform. BigTech has created this problem
