OMG. Look at the Trifid Nebula. Never seen or known it to be surrounded in full by the blue reflection nebula, and I have photographed it many times. Full announcement happening at 8am LA time (just before the Pulsar Conference starts here), which I think is about 1am Sydney time. Can't wait!

fucking hell

Trying solar photography again, there's some nice active regions right in the middle! AR 4100 is just below centre, and AR 4099 is just above and to the left. AR4100 produced a huge flare earlier that should light up the auroras in the coming nights! #astrophotography 🔭

A bit of #Jupiter (NASA / JPL-Caltech / SwRI / MSSS / "Hawksmoor-70")

This movie shows the bubbling surface of a distant star, as captured with unprecedented clarity by the ALMA observatory. R Doradus is a huge star. Each of these bubbles is 50-75 times the diameter of our entire Sun! 🧪🔭 www.almaobservatory.org/en/press-rel...

17th May is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. The date commemorates the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to remove homosexuality from its classification of diseases. We exist. We don’t need a cure. #IDAHOBIT

NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell ~1.6% in the first quarter and have now been flat or down for more than a year. This is the first time on record that emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand.

Quick reminder for space lovers: if you’re into space exploration, skip the shady content farms of the legacy social networks… BlueSky’s full of talented folks turning raw space data into stunning original visuals. Here’s a list for you, go follow and support them 🚀 go.bsky.app/PUXRaYf 🧪🔭

going to go full reddit atheist for a moment but at the end of the day any pope is still the pope of a horrific global religious institution

First serious attempt at solar photography — lot more detail than I expected at 300mm! AR 4079 is HUGE, I could even spot it without magnification 🤯 #astrophotography #sun

Lagoon (middle) and Trifid (above and to the left of it) nebulae in Sagittarius, ~21m37s exposure Plenty more neat stuff in this field too, including one other Messier object + a few globular clusters (NGC 6544 just below Lagoon, NGC 6553 a little further down) etc #astrophotography #astrofotografia

Last night's quarter #Moon, colour enhanced to showcase the variance in lunar mineral composition #astrophotography #astrofotografia

#Mars (bright orange/red dot below centre) and the Beehive/Praesepe Cluster (M44) last night doing a nice lil' conjunction dance #astrophotography

I hope everyone working on LLMs has reckoned with their role in building a technology that, so far, has offered little to no benefit to humanity — while causing real harm by degrading art, undermining labor in creative industries, and straight up automating political propaganda

Had another go at processing the Carina Nebula, with the same data as last time — might have to stick with Siril from here onwards 🫨 #astrophotography #astrofotografia

Stunning colours! Blue stars are the hot ones (like the blue part of a flame), the white stars are a little cooler and orange / red stars are the coolest. Antares is a red supergiant star, nearing the end of its life. It will one day explode as a supernova and become a neutron star / pulsar! 🔭🧪

Kalb al Akrab — Antares, the heart of the Scorpion, and the loads of dust and other stars in its region in the sky. Might even have snuck in an asteroid or three in there :) #astrophotography

I love adding this one data point to economic charts. It works every time.

Signs of alien life on exoplanet K2-18b may just be statistical noise www.newscientist.com/article/2477...

I hate these “what have we become?” type posts because since Europeans first arrived in the Americas, some population has been subject to these kinds of policies and actions Yes things are getting worse in some ways, but stop denying history. It’s racist among other things.

First go at the #Moon in HDR, with a bit of colour enhancing on the sunlit side, from a couple nights ago. Earthshine was looking amazing! #astrophotography

A bit of #Jupiter (NASA / JPL-Caltech / SwRI / MSSS / "Srilal")

"Not strong evidence" - @spschmidt.bsky.social "Almost certainly not life" - @tessafisher.bsky.social In which I round up some Community Response on the exoplanet biosignature paper from last night 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

TBH this comment by the author has dramatically reduced my optimism about the "possible signs of alien life" exoplanet result being likely to hold up to further scrutiny. 🤨 (Chris is a prominent astronomer who has written several papers on exoplanets and planetary atmospheres.)

PSA: It is never aliens.

Ontem lancei um vídeo nas redes vizinhas sobre TURISMO ESPACIAL e por que quem gosta de astronomia NÃO deveria estar apoiando isso ⚠️ Link abaixo pra quem ainda não viu:

🚨 I have another record to share - carbon dioxide (CO₂) averaged a record high of 428.2 ppm in March 2025 10 years ago March averaged about 401.7 ppm Provided by gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/. Climate monitoring and data like this are at risk. #StandUpForScience

I hope everyone remains safe and also that people know that a corporate spaceflight of only women astronauts for a company owned by a deeply destructive billionaire who is enabling fascism is just public relations for fascism and has absolutely nothing to do with feminism
