SCOTUS has used the Free Exercise Clause to bulldoze the Establishment Clause off a cliff

The same Court that rejects the idea that religious discussions and displays can be coercive to non- and other-believers will likely rule that discussions and displays of LGBTQ+ existence are coercive to religious objectors. This is incoherent, results-driven doctrine.

for alito especially, racism is fake, anti-LGBT bigotry is fake, and the only real discrimination is against conservative christians who can't make public school curriculum by decree

I'm listening to argument in Mahmoud v. Taylor, the conservative Christian attack on books with LGBTQ characters in elementary schools, and it is impossible to overstate how contemptuous Sam Alito is of the idea of treating LGBTQ people with respect. He is a rank homophobe. Nancy Mace in a robe.

SCOTUS in June: if a teacher reads the majority opinion in Obergefell to their class religious families have a right to opt out of the lesson.

NEW: Meet My God Votes, which since 2023 has coordinated weekly worship gatherings in the Texas Capitol — and is now in statehouses in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Maine and Indiana. The group has close ties to GOP lawmakers — "God's avengers" — and says "God has a side on every issue."

Christian leaders acting like Christ shouldn’t be so remarkable.

OPINION by Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons: Gutherie writes how ‘the pope’s death is a reminder of the surprising ways his papacy was part of that wave of acceptance.’ READ NOW: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

My obituary for Pope Francis @pontifexes.bsky.social

Happy Easter. Today, I’m thinking about the pleas of Jennifer, the wife of Kilmar Garcia. And I’m holding onto the hope of the resurrection for overcoming “the experience of innocent suffering and the unjust use of power,” as James Cone described the crucifixion. www.whitetoolong.net/p/god-hasnt-...

"Imagine what the Civil Rights Movement would have looked like, if MLK had looked at opinion polling and said, nevermind, let’s pack it up, people love anticommunism, let’s pivot to that."

Happy #Easter Weekend! 🤣

if you are wearing a cross while you go after immigrants and push hate against marginalized groups then what i have to surmise is the cross is actually a medal for getting rid of someone you didn't like.

Happy Easter..but not for everyone imprisoned unjustly or missing religious services because of a Herod like president and ICE..

Personally, I think it should be front page news for at least a month if a sitting US President is using falsified evidence to try and deny due process to a man who has committed no crime, but that’s just me

A lot of the coverage of Paula White is so soft compared to other White House advisers. Read this excellent WSJ profile for a different take, focused on her financially profiting from her role: www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

I don't really care what the "political consequences" are of fighting for the proposition that *everyone* is entitled to due process before they are removed from the United States and sent to a Salvadoran prison. It's not really a principle if you only adhere to it when it's politically expedient.

We are watching, during Holy Week, a Matthew 25 goats & sheep moment. What will we do to the least of these, including those in prison? Will we give 2 goat thumbs up like Rep. Riley Moore or be like Sen. Chris Van Hollen?

My friend, fellow Baptist, and chair of the @interfaithalliance.org board committee that oversees my work @skyeperryman.bsky.social was named to TIME 100! It’s an honor to work with her and the great team at @democracyforward.org! interfaithalliance.org/post/skye-pe...

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

"The support I've had from evangelicals, Christians and everybody, people of faith really has been incredible. I believe it's been unprecedented," says Trump, whose admin is facing 5 lawsuits from dozens of faith groups, including entire Christian denominations. religionnews.com/2025/03/18/j...

Of note: rescinding Harvard's tax-exempt status would also, presumably, rescind the tax status of Harvard Divinity School. HDS, like the other Big Four divinity schools, is not affiliated with a religious tradition. It does, however, train pastors, priests, religious/spiritual leaders, etc.

NEW: An international student at the Catholic University of America, a college in DC often associated with conservative Catholicism, has had their visa revoked by the Trump administration. religionnews.com/2025/04/16/c...

"the president defied a Supreme Court ruling to return a man mistakenly sent to a gulag... and spoke of sending Americans to foreign concentration camps. This is the beginning of an American policy of state terror, and it has to be identified as such to be stopped" snyder.substack.com/p/state-terror

The authoritarian theocracy televised

I’m going to say something that shouldn’t be controversial but will be. If you are a Christian, you can support border control and immigration being legal vs illegal. You CANNOT celebrate deportations and get off on the cruelty, and be a real Christ follower. Period

Never, ever let anyone tell you Americans only care about their economic self interest and therefore we must frame everything through that lens alone. That merely aids and abets fascism. People care about the things they hear repeated over and again.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been sitting in a Salvadoran prison for over a month because the Trump Admin made a mistake. Now, the Admin is defying SCOTUS & refusing to bring him back. If we allow Trump to violate Kilmar's rights, none of our rights are safe. Kilmar is all of us.

While there are a variety of theological understandings of human sexuality and gender, we can all unite around the belief that nobody should fear for their safety or face discrimination based on who they love or who they are. cc @glaad.bsky.social

He is a union apprentice and raising three special needs kids, two of them from his wife's previous relationships so yes he is certainly in the running.

MAJOR SCOOP: The local detective who first accused Mr. Abrego Garcia of being a member of MS-31 was suspended from the police force and indicted merely WEEKS LATER for providing confidential information to a sex worker who he was paying in exchange for sexual acts.

Since June 1, 2022, @glaad.bsky.social's ALERT Desk has tracked 150+ anti-LGBTQ incidents targeting affirming faith-based communities in the US. These include 54 cases of vandalism, 38 cases of threats and harassment, 37 protests, 7 attempted arsons, 3 assaults, and 2 bomb threats.

Don’t get it twisted: the majority of Christians in America support LGBTQ+ rights, says our own @guthriegf.bsky.social at today’s Collective of Queer Christian Leaders rally at the U.S. Capitol. Christians for LGBTQ rights are the majority! 🏳️‍🌈

We found in our recent experimental study that politicians who talk about ending "anti-Christian bias" are often heard by White Christians as promising to stamp out anti-WHITE bias. It's a racial dog whistle, a less offensive way of saying "I'll stick up for White people." doi.org/10.1177/0956...

“this effort may appear to address certain forms of stigma against Christians, particularly against Catholics. In reality,it will weaponize a narrow understanding of religious freedom to legitimize discrimination against marginalized groups like the LGBTQ community.” www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

The courage of faith groups on full display!

Tonight we learned that it was indeed Andry, the gay man sent to El Salvador because of his “mom” and “dad” tattoos, who an American journalist saw sobbing as guards slapped him repeatedly and shaved his head. He is an innocent. And Trump sent him to a torture prison. Bring them back!
