Good news in the world

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines. The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds. It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

USAID’s website has been deleted, all that is left is a note saying all personnel are now on administrative leave and personnel outside the US are to be brought home. Completely illegal, no act of congress or even executive order was signed to dismantle the agency

this hurts worse than the tariffs 😭

Canada is arguably putting more direct pressure on elected Republicans than any U.S.-based group or organization including the Democratic Party www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

Rescuers have freed a Humpback Whale entangled in ropes at a Skye salmon farm. The rescuers said the rope was wrapped around the whale's head and left fin. The rope is believed to have snagged on a heavy duty chain anchoring a mooring buoy to the seabed. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Rare bird flu strain found in California raises potential of wider spread. First U.S. detection of virulent #H5N9 strain, at a California duck farm, draws scrutiny as evidence of genetic re-assortment that could trigger human outbreaks, by @fenitn.bsky.social wapo.st/4jArJ7u via @washingtonpost.com

Was literally talking to the union representing federal air traffic controllers earlier today about how there’s already a major shortage of air traffic controllers and the resignation offers they all just got from OPM could seriously endanger public safety.

BREAKING: Trump administration rescinds order that attempted to freeze federal aid spending, just one day after it was issued. nbcnews.to/40AkVhq

This comments section is the first time I've felt even a shred of hope in eight days.

Nearly all coffee consumed in the United States is imported, and the largest source of that coffee is Colombia. Trump is putting a 25% tax on our top source of coffee, and that tax will be passed on to American consumers

Dudes rock

This is NOT a reason for exercising the pardon power & it's not a legitimate use of presidential authority even if Trump is legally entitled to do it. Rewarding people for their political support of your candidacy by pardoning their kids is a sign of political corruption.

BREAKING: On his first day in office, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will withdraw from the #ParisAgreement on climate change. Read the statement by Ani Dasgupta, President & CEO, WRI: https://buff.ly/3PIhhx6

Won't somebody think of the views? sfstandard.com/2025/01/14/g...

We cannot borrow (or tax) our way out of a crisis caused by the failure of those pricing properties (including their owners) to take climate reality into account. The scale of overvaluation is too large, and public funds are desperately needed for programs with actual widespread public benefit.

I always said “this is the best year so far in human history to get cancer” and John retorted, “yeah, but next year would have been better.” Truly ridiculous how right he was…

This is a fascinating article, and a reminder that TB is caused by impoverishment as much as it's caused by bacteria.

Heartbreaking. We had just learned she had another calf after her loss. Just a few weeks later, she’s lost this one too. Frustrated with writers describing this as “apparent” grief. It is not anthropomorphism to know kinship with wild animals and grieve a common pain… to love our children.

Spokane passed a bunch of housing reforms recently—eliminating parking minimums, increasing height maximums, reducing lot minimums, allowing more missing middle, & expanding property tax exemptions for new multifamily projects—and now they're building record amounts of housing

Yup. City planners literally printed this in an apartment open house I went to in Vancouver. An apartment as a “shield” for rich homeowners, from arterial noise and pollution. Hundreds of apartment renters used as human shields.

We know, firsthand, the solutions to this problem. And yet…
