The joy of the day - first crinkle of emerging Yellow Rattle

Here's a cool beetle I saw in Montana, a reticulated beetle (Priacma serrata). If you zoom in, you can see it has gone to the great trouble and expense of getting itself covered in high-quality Berber carpeting, a luxury few other beetles can afford. Males are attracted to the smell of bleach. 🐙🌿📷

If you are ever at Blickling Hall NT it’s worth visiting the mausoleum, where you will want to see the abundant Gyalecta jenensis on the northern face. One of only 3 Norfolk locations for this lichen.

A fantastic book. A perfect combination of knowledge from both lived experience and scientific studies to really get to grips with these two troubled species. And the story so well told by @richardkbroughton.bsky.social. Let’s hope we still have the birds as well as the book 20-30 years from now.

Some blue sky in this image of Wharfedale, Yorkshire, announces our move to this platform. The BBS will be having its annual Spring Field Meeting there, starting on Saturday, in this beautiful limestone countryside. It's been getting rather lonely on X/Twitter......

Currently working on one of my very favourite wildflowers. The lovely Wood Sorrel, Oxalis acetosella, made from fluffy wool fibres ☺️

Today's spider ID resources is Britain's Spiders, one of @princetonupress.bsky.social's WILDGuides. This is the current standard field guide, with ID and much other information for nearly all GB macro spiders and a few of the larger Money spiders (Linyphiidae). #spiders #arachnids #arachnology

Are you spotting Violets (Sweet, Hairy, Common or Early Dog) in bloom? Want to find out which is which? Check out this handy cribsheet: bsbi.org/wp-content/u... It was commissioned by the ever-helpful @botanybeck.bsky.social for #WildFlowerHour & was created by the amazing @naturelark.bsky.social!

With spider activity increasing, we're looking at spider ID resources, starting today at the beginner's end of the spectrum with our 17 Factsheets on common and conspicuous species - freely available to read online or print from www.britishspiders.org.uk/factsheets. #spiders #arachnids #arachnology

10 years ago, we had this idea of using tree cores of the French NFI @ignfrance.bsky.social to massively measure wood density in a medical scanner @inrae-france.bsky.social. This is now done for +100000 cores in +150 species. Congrats to Leban & colleagues Inrae/NFI ! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

"We're extremely concerned." Jono Ledley from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust tells @cathynewman.bsky.social that the North Sea oil spill is a "nasty cocktail of chemicals" that could do a lot of damage to sea birds and wildlife in the area. Read and watch: www.channel4.com/news/north-s...

Five years on and we’re still going round and round with whether Covid is airborne. There’s no scientific doubt. Denial broke us. healthydebate.ca/2025/03/topi...

Can plants be cuddly? I think so! I love #needlefelting them! I’ve just finished another little Harebell or Scottish Bluebell, I have to say, it’s adorable!! It arrives gift boxed with free tracked delivery in the UK 🥰💙 #handmade #art #BSNM www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1...

Lamentable.

For 8 years I worked to protect nature on the Humber Estuary, oil spill response was part of my brief, and what has happened today was the stuff that my nightmares were made of. Thinking of all those affected and responding to protect lives and wildlife www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Want to find out more about lichens, there are events listed in March in Cumbria, Hampshire, Shropshire, and Tayside britishlichensociety.org.uk/the-society/...

Lovely meeting of the @britishlichensociety.org.uk's data committee this evening. On a lichen theme, then, here are some photos I took whilst I was on the BLS's excellent LABS course (Lichens for Absolute BeginnerS) last year. #macro #macrophotography #lichen #nature

Nothing to see, here 😏 just the usual moss and lichen... Lichen with LEGS? And eyes?🤨 Better take another look. Behold the Lichen-like Spider!😄 Female of Araneus sp, probably A. circe or A. angulatus, lucky encounter during sunday's hike. #Arachnida #Spider #Invertebrates #Photography #SpiderFriends

I love it when the sun shines and the Common Whitlowgrass flowers are fully open. 🌞 So pretty. #WildflowerHour

Giant Orchids Himantoglossum robertianum in Oxfordshire this morning. A fortnight on from my previous visit and things have only moved on slightly: several in full flower in late February 2024! Anyway, let the orchids commence! @bsbibotany.bsky.social @ukorchids.bsky.social

yep. The nice thing is that we won't remember that this is why we can't remember anything. Silver linings.

Another health breakthrough.

The NHS strikes £85,000 deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink as part of a wider programme. This country is so fucked.

Curating a Starter Pack that will hopefully be useful to folk coming over to BlueSky and looking for all of the UK conservation orgs and recording societies go.bsky.app/Nget1LP Will keep adding to this. DM or reply to be added and please share.

Good morning, and welcome to a new week! Our featured tour this week is Butterflies of the Hautes Pyrenees - a guaranteed departure this July, and of course a tour that generates a donation to support the conservation work of @europebutterfly.bsky.social. (1/3) mariposanature.com/tours/butter...

Lovely history lesson about the Brecks from Bill. To learn more about ploughing for waders: wadertales.wordpress.com/2021/02/26/g... Paper by Rob Hawkes, @pauldolman.bsky.social et al #ornithology

When Trump was sworn in, Elon Musk's corporations were under more than 32 investigations conducted by at least 11 federal agencies. Most of the cases are now closed or likely to be closed soon, and the federal agencies are being defanged by DOGE. Funny how that works, huh?

Just FYI, Tom argued for universal welfare, abolition, public education, state-sponsored pre/post-natal care, family subsidies, & retirement for workers at 50 w/state pensions that would double at 60. He also considered the American revolution a failure, co-opted by self-serving, landowning elites.

Five years on from the pandemic, the right’s fake Covid narrative has been turbo-charged into the mainstream (MT @profstevegriffin.bsky.social) www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Exciting to watch Elon Musk pivot so elegantly from making his cars toxic to the demographic most likely to consider one, to making his Starlink a national security risk for all the governments who might have wanted it.
