Exciting news for those writing books on Asia. There's a new book series in town: Power Currents: Asian Media in the World! Edited by some great folks including @jonabel.bsky.social @cheryllsoriano.bsky.social and Rahul Mukherjee, this series looks exciting: upittpress.org/series/power...

As a former Fulbright Scholar (in Chile), I personally understand how terrifying this is. U.S. citizens around the world & foreign nationals in the U.S. — all Fulbright Scholars — have now had their incomes eliminated & are stranded. DOGE is an illegal, criminal operation that must be shut down.

Just got an email from the Fulbright Association. As of right now, funding has been cut off to 12,500 US citizens currently abroad and and more than 7,400 foreigner scholars and students in the United States

Multiple Fulbright scholars received this notice, that they will get only one week of stipend due to a "funding pause." Scholars (including ours) are in the U.S., with rent payments due and work underway. This is ridiculous.

Well said @asianstudies.org www.asianstudies.org/aas-statemen...

Thank you @asianstudies.org www.asianstudies.org/aas-statemen...

We have two job openings in the Media Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Non tenure-track, of interest for those who work in cultural studies or critical media, don't mind a full-time lecture schedule, and enjoy working with grad TAs. It's a three-year renewable post. Please circulate!

Just checked out some Japanese YouTube comments responding to news about US Secretary of Defense Hegseth signaling that the US wants Ukraine to surrender part of its territory to Russian invaders. It doesn't look like he's inspiring confidence in US pledges to protect Japan.

The NIH hospital treated me for hairy cell leukemia with moxetumomab, developed there specifically for this rare disease that Big Pharma won’t touch. It worked like a miracle - it’s been 2 years with no detectable disease. If you have a similar story, quote -post to build a nested thread.

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic. globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

Now more than ever.

Here's a piece I just wrote for the British Film Institute on colour in Japanese film, to tie in with the Japan Foundation UK's screenings of CARMEN COMES HOME as part of its annual touring season. www.bfi.org.uk/lists/10-gre...

The Journal of Japanese Studies’ Winter 2025 volume is now live! In addition to new-book reviews, find essays by Eugenia Bogdanova-Kummer, Samuel Yamashita, David Atherton, Christopher Smith, Andrea Germer, and Andrew Elliott. Visit online.ucpress.edu/jjs for more information.

I don't know how else to put this: This is fucking insane. NSF, a $10 billion grantmaking agency, is planning to lay off between a quarter and a half of its staff in the next two months.

Now is a time we need to support each other in academia across disciplines, across universities: Those in fields not under attack, need to help those who are under attack Senior faculty need to support junior faculty Privileged faculty need to support marginalized faculty #academicsky

Ah ok, well, glad we know now, I guess.

If you wanted no leaks you should have gone into Settings -> Security -> Configure privacy & security -> Privacy options -> Other -> Configure -> Media interface and clicked “Disallow.” The Leak setting is on by default but we understand your privacy is important so we’ve made it easy to opt out

we'll probably catch some shit for this one but the timing is impossible to ignore futurism.com/america-dead...

the headline is not “trump blames deadly plane crash on DEI” but “trump seizes on deadly plane crash to attack minorities”

1. Breaking News: Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting trans youth and teachers in schools who teach for them. It goes after "social transition" and threatens arrests. I will go through line by line, as I have the last 3 nights. Find the EO here: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

"Chicago Public Schools officials said ICE agents were denied entry to a South Side elementary school Friday morning. Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates called the situation "unprecedented" at a news conference Friday afternoon." #Chicago abc7chicago.com/post/us-immi...

Trump just took 500 Marines on standby to help with escalating California wildfires and sent them to the border instead, where migrant crossings have been at the lowest level they’ve been in years since July. Unbelievable. And apparently armed, which is new. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

SHARE WIDELY. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one. (1/3)

Die Zeit won't even show the salute.

Elon Musk did the Hitler salute twice during his speech today. But it isn’t clear what this gesture might have meant.

Data privacy rights are like bullet trains, walkable cities, and universal healthcare, a pipe dream, a utopian fantasy, something that's standard elsewhere but portrayed as utterly impossible in the United States.

The MAGA movement has convinced many that fleets of trans kids are being subjected to woke medical barbarism. The real numbers? 0.017% of youth are coded as trans and receive puberty blockers. 0.037% access hormone therapy. That's 1/20th of one percent. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Please consider signing the petition to halt drastic changes being proposed for East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield, one of the leaders in EA studies. Having visited the program multiple times over the years, I find such changes shocking. www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh...

East Asian Studies at Sheffield University is an amazing school. We held our 2023 Martial Arts Studies Conference there - for precisely that reason. Please add your voice to fight for East Asian Studies at Sheffield Uni. The UK needs MORE schools like this! www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh...

East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield is under severe threat, help me and my colleagues fight back on the proposed cuts! www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh...

So sad to hear my undergraduate department, the School for East Asian Studies at Sheffield University, is being targeted for cuts. It's a top dept in Japanese Studies, providing specialist knowledge rarely available at such quality. Please consider signing: www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh...

East Asian Studies at Sheffield under threat - please support www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh...

Offering support to colleagues in East Asian Studies at @sheffielduni.bsky.social who are facing severe cutbacks. Sheffield has been a vital nexus of knowledge production and exchange in Asian studies. It would be a huge loss if these cuts were taken on board. www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh...

Please support this important campaign to save East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield. A hotbed of brilliant academic research that should be preserved at all costs: www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/sh...

I'll be speaking (in English) about my (still) new monograph at Nagoya University, Thursday, 16 January at 17:00. 7th Floor Conference Hall (Integrated Humanities Bldg) 名古屋大学 カンファレンスホール (文系総合館7階) No preregistration necessary. 入場無料・予約不要・Q&A日本語可

Once again I am obliged to mention that I recently worked in a school district where the policy was teachers were not to accept gifts from parents worth more than $5 lest it affect our grading.

Come check out this online symposium on Japanese cinema! I'll be giving one of two keynotes and look forward to a group of really fascinating papers. Contact Motonori Sato at [email protected] for a Zoom link.
