Aldo Martinez-Gomez received a DHS letter telling him to leave the country immediately before they find him. "Where do they want me to go? I was born in National City. I was raised in San Diego County my whole life."

Harvard professor of government Steven Levitsky studies how healthy democracies can slip into authoritarianism. He says the Trump administration has already done grave damage. Listen: tinyurl.com/495bnzbb

Minnesota is suing President Donald Trump’s administration for targeting trans children through executive orders, Attorney General Keith Ellison announced. “We will not let a small group of vulnerable children, who are only trying to be healthy and to live their lives, be demonized,” Ellison said.

"Mr. Prada’s disappearance has created concerns that more immigrants have been deported to El Salvador than previously known. It also raises the question of whether some deportees may have been sent to other countries with no record of it." 🚨

Proud to see American University (where I teach) on here!

The regime is so busy kidnapping international students and banning books that it can't keep the milk safe.

This is a bad thing

Sounds promising, but I suspect high profile defections will be the exception that proves the rule, esp bc: - Canada is reducing immigration levels - Higher ed is grappling w budget shortfalls and some of my Canadian colleagues have already lost their jobs

NSF has spent decades—and billions of dollars—trying to attract more women and members of underrepresented groups into STEM. Not anymore. scim.ag/3RUtgZg

Yesterday marked 100 days since the LA fires broke out. 🔥 It was a horrific start to the year, but also a period that revealed the most heroic and compassionate community spirit I have ever witnessed. We dodged the worst of the #Eatonfire but many are still in the throes of a long recovery. 😔

Welcome to the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave! Now keep your mouth shut if you don't want trouble.

I increasingly think this regime is a gigantic temper tantrum by people who want their ignorance and conspiracy theories to be given the same status as fact and truth. They have no idea how research or democracy works but they are hell-bent on destroying both.

When your mission is to slash and burn, you see everything as waste. But that "waste" is actually US - the society these programs serve. These fools don't have the first idea about what actually makes us great.

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

This speaks volumes about the state of academic freedom in the US. I encourage well-meaning French universities and American expats to work w/ cultural experts to ease the adjustment for everyone.

Even if a foreign power invaded us I am not sure they would intentionally destroy food safety oversight like this.

The health care pioneer boldly announces that in light of "recent national events, we’re embracing an opportunity to accelerate Mayo Clinic’s belonging journey."

Our citizenship will not protect us.

Thirty-eight of 43 experts cut last month from the boards that review the science and research that happens in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health are female, Black or Hispanic, according to an analysis by the chairs of a dozen of the boards.

Wow. This is so counterproductive. Banning the study of culture doesn't make cultural complexity go away. It just means that leaders will be less equipped to wisely navigate it.

A US citizen says he was aggressively detained with no explanation while entering Vermont. Officers reached for their gun and demanded to go through his email. "I really thought things would change... when we have Mr. Trump in office. Things actually changed to the worse."

I guess their concept of a plan for making us great is to stop tracking data. If you can't see problems, and you stop trying to solve them, they... go away, right?

The Trump administration ripped Kilmar Abrego Garcia off the street, ignored due process, and illegally deported him to a torture prison in El Salvador. It is un-American, immoral, illegal, and needs to stop.

A free and open society doesn't taze protestors or call people brainwashed for asking their reps questions.

I want to tell you why the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia should matter to you. The one power you cannot give the executive is the ability to imprison or expel anyone regardless of their legal rights. That is our key check against autocracy. And we are watching it disappear.

An organization representing 72,000 academic professionals at 125 Canadian universities and colleges advises its members to avoid non-essential travel to the United States. https://www.caut.ca/latest/2025/04/caut-advises-academics-against-non-essential-travel-us

A perspective from my home state of AZ: "When we defund the humanities, we don’t just save a few dollars. We silence stories. We stall learning. We strip rural and underserved communities of access to history, culture, and education."

Meanwhile on LinkedIn people in my network are busy sharing ChatGPT action figures of themselves. Not saying there's no place for fun... but the disconnect is astounding.

"When liberalism was firmly entrenched, its discontents could treat authoritarian ideas as interesting avant-garde provocations. Authoritarianism in power, however, was always going to be crude and stupid." - Michelle Goldberg

Another horror story at the US border.

My first time getting an earthquake alert while on a zoom meeting... brb have to duck, cover and hold on! 🫨 #sandiegoearthquake

"Its goal isn't just to shatter a few institutions. It intends to crush the power and authority of whole professions, to severely weaken, if not purge, a social class." - Franklin Foer The regime has declared war on me and my career. Staying silent is not only reprehensible but pointless.

Well it’s true that we shredded our alliance with the entirety of Europe, our historically successful trading relationships, our role as leader of the G7, but at least we built strong ties with El Salvador, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, so it could imprison our people

To maintain my sanity, I take a break from the news and social media over the weekend. On Monday, everything looks much more bonkers and unhinged, and I can never tell if it got a lot worse, or if I just see it more clearly after being away - or both.

What a betrayal. Like so many other regime decisions, it is cruel to those affected and counterproductive to our country's broader interests.
