More crocheting for the apocalypse.

I made my first blanket. Practicing for when I’m fired and exiled for speaking against the evil empire and have to clothe my family with only my bare hands. Hahaha! Haha. ha.

Today I am grateful for my friend Jeny Carlson, pastor of @northminsterpres.bsky.social, who invited me to spend the whole summer learning and preaching about (and against) White Christian Nationalism last year. I am re-listening to some of our sermons from that time and finding it encouraging.

A blessing, for these days. From the Black Rock prayer book.

Seems to us that when empathy is called sin, we have completely lost any theology of grace. Christ's commandments were very clear; love God, love one another as God has loved us. Humans can't do either one without empathy.

I’m more of a North Face guy but this seems a bit extreme

My sermon is decidedly mid, but I did finish the other crochet fingerless glove!

Another Saturday, another sermon revision after a week of muddling through study, prep, and writing. I really do love preaching, just not at this exact moment.

Breathe. Embrace your free time. Pour into your community. Respect what you can't control. Reject nihilism. Remember pace and perspective. Burnout is the enemy and helps no one, least of all yourself, and should be stridently avoided. That's the only way we're gonna get through this. And we will.

First crochet project! ✅ Now to try to make its twin…

In light of the recent executive order about gender, I found these words from the #PCUSA LGBTQIA Advocacy Committee very heartening: "We affirm that transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, and intersex people’s lives embody the overflowing richness of God’s image into a diversity of expressions.

Look up the Declaration of Barmen. Read it. Read what happened to its authors. Remember many denominations have said this is central to their faith.

Last week sermon writing was a slog. I kept procrastinating and getting interrupted. Finally on Friday night I had enough words to call it good, and closed my laptop until Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised when I found a decent draft, cleaned it up, and preached it with my whole chest.
