This is revolting

Democracy Dies in the Hands of Jeff Bezos

Boycotts are taking hold. Protests are on the rise. Federal courts are hitting back. The Trump-Musk-Vance regime's popularity is plunging and DOGE is losing credibility. GOP leadership is now advising lawmakers to avoid holding in person town halls. Keep up the fight.

Good debunk of a notorious fossil fuel lie. In reality, as low-cost wind and solar enter the dispatch queue, high-cost fossil fuel plants in the stack go off-line, saving consumers money. The more they are off-line, the more the savings.

A win, at least for the moment, for human rights and the rule of law. Underscores how crucial the courts have become right now.

For the US to side with Russia and North Korea to oppose a UN resolution condemning the illegal invasion of Ukraine defies all common sense and adds insult to the countless injuries suffered by the brave Ukrainian people. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/24/p...

What stands out in these numbers is not that South Koreans remain among the unhappiest (overworked) people among OECD countries but that crime is increasing sharply - both property crime and violent crime. Korea is still a relatively safe place day to day, though less so than before.

President Macron politely telling the truth. www.cnn.com/2025/02/24/p...

In Trump, Putin and Xi Jinping can plainly see a version of themselves. He is doing their work for them. He is damaging American democracy, diminishing American power, and destroying American alliances with an energy and an efficiency that must exceed their wildest dreams.

None of this has anything to do with effectiveness, or “lethality,” or promoting “warfighters," or any other buzzwords. It is praetorianism, plain and simple, and it is an assault on our military and our democracy. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Lessons learned from the way South Koreans blocked the president's martial law decree last year: 1. Take action proportionate to the threat and move fast 2. Persuade military forces to side with the people 3. Be prepared to prevent the next martial law 4. Create festive, diverse forms of resistance

Good for Gov. Mills. This is the standard. DO NOT BACK DOWN.

The latest sorry example of the predatory global politics of Trump 2.0. @timothysnyder.bsky.social calls it sadistic, and as US strategy, it is also incredibly shortsighted. Whenever we Americans next run into our own unforeseen national hour of need, how will the rest of the world respond then?

Donald Trump wants to strike a deal to end Russia's war on Ukraine. What could possibly go wrong? For Europe, just about everything, it seems.

The main focus for Europe: ◾️Strategic autonomy; ◾️Own security; ◾️Reviving European military potential and military production; ◾️Ukraine is not an instrument but a partner: Ukraine has the knowledge and experience in defense and military production.

Lord Patten has a way with words: “We have Trump and his oligarchy of ignorant shoe shiners vandalizing the network of organizations, agreements and values...which have given most of us, including America...an extraordinary degree of peace and prosperity." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/o...

Facts: *Zelenskyy's approval is 57% *Russia invaded Ukraine *Total US aid to Ukraine - $119B *Total EU aid to Ukraine - $151B *Zelenskyy is democratically elected *Ukraine constitution does not allow elections during martial law From @rihardskols.bsky.social , EU Parliament member Trump lies

The way the US under Trump 2.0 appears to be appeasing Russia's aggression against Ukraine is ominous and potentially devastating - for Ukraine, for the longstanding US/Europe transatlantic partnership, and for all democracies worldwide that value a peaceful, rules-based international order.

Elon Musk is making wild claims that #DOGE has found evidence of massive Social Security fraud.... The reality is that Musk's young engineers don't seem to be able to understand COBOL databases while Musk is misrepresenting the Social Security data www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

Is Musk demanding the data held by the Social Security Administration in order to make it more efficient? Unlikely. Here's a better explanation: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

"The longer and further Trump and his acolytes proceed with their authoritarian ambitions, the harder it will be to resist, and the greater will be the risk not just to our democratic process but to our basic liberties. The key is to unite in defense of our democratic checks and balances."

On this Presidents' Day in the United States, prescient words of warning from George Washington's Farewell Address in 1796:

60 MINUTES: “Utter nonsense. The most accountable aid agency in the world is USAID… DOGE fired their top 58 officials within an hour of arriving…” This was never about efficiency. Full: www.instagram.com/reel/DGLXa9r...

Fed prosecutors Hagan Scotten and Danielle Sassoon “both understood that they could not make a deal with the devil, following orders they knew were wrong, and come out with their integrity intact. “It’s a lesson the Republican Party as a whole failed to grasp when they succumbed to Trump in 2016.”

Neo-Nazi terrorist and convicted mass murderer Anders Breivik, who killed 77 people in Norway in 2011, cited this same Napoleon quote in his manifesto.

I had to check and see if this is real. It is. It's the unabashed assertion of a dictator. It's an open renunciation of his oath of office.

Not a moment too soon for the Democrats to form a shadow cabinet, just as British political parties in opposition appoint "shadow" secretaries to hold the ruling party's feet to the fire and explain daily how a better country is possible. See this piece by Yale historian @timothysnyder.bsky.social

American institutions—from the media to Congress—continue to underreact to the unraveling of our democracy. Overseas our media would not hesitate to call what we’re living through a full-blown autocratic coup. Here's my attempt at the story they should write: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-trump...

I just followed the Associated Press and I suggest you all do the same.

More details on the plot behind impeached South Korean president Yoon's martial law decree: arrest some 500 political opponents - including judges, lawmakers, and journalists - and hold them in detention centers, while also making a bid to extend Yoon's presidency past the limit of a single term.

Musk, Vance & Trump all misrepresent democracy. When they say “democracy”, they mean a free-for-all with no rule of law, where the winner takes all. When Europe says “democracy”, we mean proportional representation, collaborative politics, citizen rights, and agreed guide rails guaranteed by law.

As Vance takes swipes at European democracies, the real worry in Europe and beyond is the fate of Ukraine. As Germany's foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, put it: "A sham peace would not bring lasting security, neither for the people in Ukraine nor for us in Europe or the United States.”

The lawsuit alleges the migrants have been "disappeared into a black box" and are unable to communicate with attorneys.

This is so deeply inhumane and clearly violates due process.

My latest for the Atlantic Council reflects on the cost of appeasing Russian leaders for the crime of aggression: invasion, occupation, annexation. What will be some of the costs if this policy is pursued? ⬇️🧵 www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrain...

This resort facility now being demolished by North Korea is one of the last remnants of the "Sunshine Policy" two decades ago, when South Korea tried to build collaboration between the two Koreas. It's sad to see it go, especially for all the families separated by 80 years of North-South division.

BREAKING: France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain & UK sign a joint statement vowing to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty & demanding a role in the peace talks. This is leadership. It’s also unprecedented. A western alliance is having to form against a new, twin & united threat: Trump & Putin.

At a time when just about all of us worry about the future of the planet as well as threats to democracy, this new global citizens' assembly is a promising step forward for both.

The assaults on CFPB, USAID, DOE, etc. underscore how Trump's and Musk's DOGE, besides being unconstitutional, is not about "government efficiency" but is all about damaging and dismantling programs, services and safeguards that protect and benefit everyday people in the United States and worldwide.
