NSF employees were unlawfully reclassified from career to probationary, and then fired. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

I guess there's no polls here, but are you tired, yes or no

I shit you not. I am so tired.

In addition to being a PhD candidate and operational weather forecaster @ DRI, I close one of my local bars 2x a week. The general public has absolutely no idea what's happening. They think the cuts are fake, or making room for "good employees"

X-Files, probably. Second runners would likely be Parks and Recreation OR People of Earth

How about the day the sky was split in two? #photography #weather

Movie you've watched more than 6 times, GIFs only (I've also seen the quoted probably 200 times 🙃)

I'm calling this paper from @tlyza89.bsky.social, @hebrooks87.bsky.social, and @mjkrocak.bsky.social *Required Reading* prior to tornado season. Where Have the EF5s Gone? A Closer Look at the “Drought” of the Most Violent Tornadoes in the United States journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

This morning, the US National Science Foundation fired 168 employees, approximately 10% of its workforce, for no cause other than they were the agency's most recent hires. 🧪 Co-workers are leaving supportive messages before they have to clear out of the building at 5 p.m. Sent to me by a source ⬇️

I am doing aviation (and other) weather forensics. Agree with your assessment.

I worked in forensic meteorology for about 1.5 years with a case load that was probably 98% aviation incidents. The frequency with which we are seeing aviation incidents is pretty normal. You would be shocked at how many planes/helicopters crash in this country on a monthly basis.

If you care about science & higher ed in America right now, your world has changed. We have been forced into a battle we didn’t choose. Whatever our titles, our jobs now also includes emergency response, psychological first aid, organizing & many other things we weren’t trained in

Reminding myself that I’m low-productivity and do not contribute to public safety as I issue several Tornado Warnings in the dead of night on an overtime overnight shift

To probationary federal employees who have been terminated: Democracy Forward has filed a first-of-its-kind class-wide complaint with the Office of Special Counsel. If civil servants want to join in the complaint, you can email [email protected]

Roses are red Violets are blue If you are within the yellow hatched area, there is a 10% probability of an EF-2+ tornado within 25 miles of you

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

We can't get eggs in town, but I get my groceries from Misfits/Imperfect Foods, and they still have *relatively* cheap eggs. I don't eat a lot of eggs, but I've started ordering multiple boxes of eggs to supply my friends with. Let me be your egg dealer

Those that were laid off, here is a resource for you.

Sorry I logged onto the internet today

Laying off meteorologists at NWS, which was already dealing with staffing issues, is a threat to public safety heading into severe weather season. No doubt everyone will give their best, but this adds stress to workers at wfo’s. There’s so many bright young Mets in our field. I’m so sorry.

I really cannot believe my childhood career dream might end like this. Feeling so small and lost.

The AMS joins over 230 organizations and 2,600 individuals in submitting the following letter to Congress, expressing concern and strong opposition to the selective removal of public data from federal websites: bit.ly/42RqXwR

Is anyone else unable to log in to UCAR's Derecho HPC?

I forgot how absolutely unhinged Season 7 of the X-Files is

Wow, wow, wow. What a sunset just now on the Isle of Harris. Lenticular clouds glowing pink over the Harris hills!

WSMV4 and WKRN2 reporting two different scenarios for the Jackson/Overton/Putnam tornado warning in middle TN. WKRN2 reporting tornado on the ground in Rickman, WSMV4 saying the rotation is weakening 😬

Nope

#wawx #thunderstorm This storm had supercell structure and apparent twin waterspouts, here with Mark Stewart and Matthew Pfab editing the photos. I'm still not believing what I saw. Very dark at the time, but did anyone else see this near Seahurst park, South of West Seattle?

Any countries whose scientific research funding bodies are NOT currently under siege by their own national leadership would do very well announcing investments in bringing in foreign research talent right now

while The Horrors persist, let us celebrate less horrors overall…. because all three mega fires in Los Angeles are finally 100% contained!!

Breaking up your regularly scheduled doomscrolling with some KH waves from Boulder:

What a fuckin week, huh?

NSF's Undergraduate Research Coordination Networks in Undergraduate Biology program has been abruptly archived. The deadline was tomorrow. People were submitting proposals. This program is designed to support the American scientific workforce. I cannot see the point of this level of self-sabotage.
