Anyone want to weigh in on this? Or can source any of it?

Not just in the UK. (tribalism + social segregation) x (status and economic pressures) = rift between knowledge and craft workers

Doing the prep work for @harkaway.bsky.social's newest. Somehow I missed this one when it came out but... no surprise - it's superb.

In the United Kingdom, I would have had to pay in order to do a PhD. In the Netherlands, it is free. Indeed, most PhD candidates are paid employees earning €40,000 a year before tax. Scholarship PhDs earn €20,000.

My latest review video is of @harkaway.bsky.social Sleeper Beach. Don’t sleep on this book folks! youtu.be/gnGhiSV4SAY?...

I've seen a few posts like this. But given that Grangemouth was allowed to go under, with ample warning, I think it's just that the government check how Reform are polling in the immediate area and base their response on that.

Professor Gina Neff of Queen Mary University London told the BBC ChatGPT is "burning through energy", and the data centres used to power it consume more electricity in a year than 117 countries. This is just ChatGPT, not even all Gen AI. Using more electricity than >60% of the world.

"Pictures are famous for their humanness, not for their pictureness." Kurt Vonnegut discussion of art in his 1997 novel Timequake offers one explanation why people might find AI creations unsatisfying.

Oh happy day! Got the new @harkaway.bsky.social novel delivered from Hive online bookstore this morning - looking forward to catching up with Cal Sounder and the Titans!

I’m re-reading this before getting into Sleeper Beach, and it’s not that I’d forgotten how much I enjoy the @harkaway.bsky.social tone, it’s that I’d sort of forgotten the feeling of enjoying it so much.

Yeah, I think saving steelworks is the right call (vital for national defence aside from anything else), but we should absolutely be doing the same for HE (and not murdering the HE sector through bad funding in the first place)

Again: Britain (not just this government but all of the recent ones) has a problem with knowledge work. Fishing, steel are manly proper jobs with a Victorian sense of place and history. Creative industries & HE are treated as secondary; derided or ignored.
