Devika Hovell: being an international lawyer right now like being a librarian in the middle of a riot.

Tomorrow!

Don't miss out on a fantastic opportunity to network and meet #intlaw experts! Register for the 2025 #ASILAM at asil.org/am.

Of course, hardly critical to the State Department's mission to see how U.S. actions are being portrayed or perceived around world...🤔

With World Athletics now working to amend its regulations on female eligibility, this webinar is (again) extremely timely. Join us tomorrow if you are free.

Would a legal system in which the longstanding interpretation of the law could be suddenly overturned by the discovery of a long-forgotten, hidden meaning even make sense?

You can't quit; you're fired!

I am Spartacus!

Strong and important statement by ASIL President Mélida Hodgson. Fair to say these views are shared broadly among ASIL leadership, myself included.

Thanks to Harlan and the FILJ staff for inviting me to this and giving me the opportunity to write a weird thing. Sanctions may not be the hip topic they were in 2022. But I fear economic warfare is coming for us all, and I’m excited to talk with such an outstanding group.

Looking to make sense of our world of sanctions and economic statecraft? (Yeah, me too!) Next Friday, February 21 at @fordhamlawnyc.bsky.social, the Fordham International Law Journal symposium on Economic Sanctions: go.activecalendar.com/FordhamUnive...

We'll miss hypocrisy when it's gone

US aid freeze claims first victims as oxygen supplies cut off. Seventy-one-year-old woman dies after being sent home from USAID funded hospital. Others die after hospitals close in refugee camps www.telegraph.co.uk/global-healt...

I don't think people are fully appreciating the shift in worldview associated with this version of economic security. It's a zero-sum, nasty, brutish, and short, hungry hungry hippos world, and I'm not sure any conception of international law or global governance can survive it.

By the way, don't ignore the other news of a pause in the FCPA. That's a big one, too. Why? US firm competitiveness is US security. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Great material in this issue, including a full set of international decisions on climate litigation, curated by @akinkugbe.bsky.social.

Thank you to @mjdurkee.bsky.social for bringing me to @washulaw.bsky.social, to Brian Tamanaha for bringing his wisdom to bear, and to all the students who engaged so deeply + thoughtfully. In confounding times, it's solace to have such a wonderful group willing to work through it all together.

Happy to welcome my former colleague @harlangcohen.bsky.social of @fordhamlawnyc.bsky.social to @washulaw.bsky.social in St. Louis for the International Law Colloquium. Look out for Harlan's very timely, interesting project on defining security in IL.⬇️ Commentator is the incomparable Brian Tamanaha.

I think we need to ban the game Diplomacy until we add required notifications after each turn that "this is the number of people you personally just killed or starved by choosing to invade Silesia."

Thanks so much to @desireelc.bsky.social for inviting me, @dianemarieamann.bsky.social for incisive comments, @sarahquinnezz.bsky.social & Taher Benany for helping put it together, Dean Usha Rodrigues for welcoming me back, and to all the students + colleagues for the incomparably rich conversation

This one is not getting enough attention. At least on its face, it seems to be directing NORTHCOM (through the Secretary of Defense) to develop a military campaign to “repel” the “invasion” resulting from “unlawful mass migration.” 1/10 www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...
