I'm not sure about what media to pay for these days, but I never question my subscription to boltsmag.org. I appreciate the attention to what actually gets done in state and local politics.

Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government. That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

With the tragic assassination of a Minnesota Democratic leader, I’m going to underline this point again.

US Veterans peacefully protesting Trump’s military birthday parade arrested at Capitol Hill. This is the moment a 80+ year old US veteran is taken away in handcuffs for practicing his 1st Amendment right. #3E #NoKings #NoKingsProtests (🎥 @gregjstoker.bsky.social )

In 1963 the S African gov passed a law so they could detain dissidents indefinitely. Known as “Sobukwe clause” bc he was the only one sentenced under it. Khalil is the extension of this logic. They have MADE him a folk hero; his release is now infinitely more threatening! Repression just too heavy.

Don't Rank Cuomo! Mike Bloomberg is so anti democracy he CONSPIRED to stay on for a 3rd TERM after VOTERS DECIDED in 2 elections to term-limit the mayor. Not satisfied with 3 TERMS, Mike Bloomberg wants to chose a new mayor he can control. He wants a 4th TERM of influence. Don't Rank Cuomo!

@prisonculture.bsky.social and I have been encouraging people to read chapter six of our book, Let This Radicalize You, which deals with the question of "violence" in social movements. We have decided to share the chapter publicly, to offer some context and grounding for the current conversation.

Look at Trump’s Truth Social post. Consider his call with Newsom. He is incoherent, insane. Failure of corporate press to say that every day as he is taking us down the road to a police state is the gravest journalistic malpractice in American history. They will never redeem themselves.

I would simply stop cooperating with Republicans on anything in the Senate until they hold the Trump regime accountable for these and many other actions.

This is a lie. We all saw the video. The Senator clearly identified himself, and he did not "lunge" toward anyone.   If these miserable propagandists will lie to you about roughing up a U.S. Senator in a room full of reporters, what won't they lie to you about?

Everything is escalation now. Taking a step back is considered weakness. Consider that when thinking through strategy.

Apparently, because it’s 2020 again, I need to start a thread on police violence targeting journalists in the US. So, here we go: 1. Australian journalist Lauren Tomasi shot by police officer with less lethal munition. m.youtube.com/watch?v=yrFJ...

Request to all my journalist friends in Los Angeles: When you're at a Mayor Bass press conference, ask her to explain what SHE is doing about LAPD shooting journalists with rubber bullets, arresting/detaining them, and otherwise acting unlawfully. Her office is not responding to me these days. 🤷‍♂️

Note the thug on horseback beating someone who's calmly walking away. Really doing the uniform proud there, buddy. And people wonder why the police have an "image problem". 🙄

Zohran is up. Keep going.

Reminder that I AM LATINA AND PROUD. I am the product of immigration - my grandmother was undocumented and entered the country from Mexico as a baby. My mother was a fierce, gorgeous Latina woman of Mexican and Spanish descent.

So-called “less-lethal” weapons like those that have been used against demonstrators in Los Angeles can cause severe, lasting harm like nerve or brain damage or blindness. They can also kill. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

When we throw up our hands and say none of it matters, we're doing the fascists’ work for them. They don't need to hide their corruption if they can convince us it's pointless to look. They don't need to silence truth-tellers if we've already decided truth is meaningless.

NOW — I’m at the ICE OUT OF NEW YORK protest in Foley Square.

“Nick Stern, a British freelance photojournalist based in LA, had emergency surgery after a three-inch plastic bullet struck his leg on Sunday. Stern told the BBC that he was wearing a press card around his neck and carrying his camera when he was shot.”

What is happening in Los Angeles is not a distraction from Trump’s Billionaire Bailout Bill. The bill explicitly gives ICE and DHS the resources needed to do around the country what they’re doing in LA. We should call that out.

UPDATE: Nick is in good spirits and recovering in hospital. The doctor told me the injury was so bad that they treated it as if it were a gunshot wound. Part of a stun grenade traveled deep into the tissue and was only visible by a cat scan. He sends his love and appreciation for all the support.

the fact that people were told “today you are going to an elementary school to lie to teachers and kidnap kids” and didn’t immediately tell their bosses to go fuck themselves is all you need to know about why ICE should be dismantled

Hey, journalists covering LA protests — In light of multiple attacks against reporters, find here in this thread resources to help you prepare yourself for covering protests, protecting yourself in the field, and getting the help you need. Share and bookmark.

Dozens of journalists were assaulted by law enforcement in Los Angeles this weekend. The press were just doing their job -- a sacred one explicitly protected by law. Press rights orgs will follow up collectively tomorrow. Tonight, I emailed evidence to local/state/federal officials. My sign off:

Three months ago today, plain-clothes ICE agents abducted Mahmoud Khalil in his apartment building lobby after they'd followed him home. Free Mahmoud.

It's hard to overstate how destructive the reflexive "this is a distraction!" stuff that politicians and commentators and people are always peddling. Everything is happening all at once. That's how authoritarianism works. If you can't navigate and synthesize this, you're not meeting the moment.

I don't think this is press, but the public needs to see this as well. Imagine what they would do if they didn't think there were cameras everywhere.

This is wild. I thought it was going to be a stray but nope; you see him take aim from close range and just shoot the reporter while she is broadcasting.

When I, a professional law professor, point out something the Executive Branch has done that is unlawful, I continue to be surprised by how many people reply with some version of "what makes you think they care?" To be clear, no, I don't think this Administration is looking to me for legal advice.
