Satellite and fiber broadband are not equal, and any policy that treats them as such will widen the very divide policymakers should be trying to bridge, writes Christopher Ali. www.techpolicy.press/when-you-wis...

Share your Social Security Administration disaster stories with Peter and then consider calling your member of Congress to ask what the hell they're planning on doing about it

It was great to draw on this in my remarks yesterday at the @civilrightsorg.bsky.social event on the weaponized #FCC.

Join us at this @publicknowledge.bsky.social event to launch the paper I got to co-author with @haroldfeld.bsky.social. In addition to the keynote speaker here, we'll be hosting CEO and Editor of Tech Policy Press @justinhendrix.bsky.social as Moderator, plus a great lineup of panelists... 1/2

I've decided to share this image of the top of the cable in case it's helpful to other journalists looking to follow up on my reporting:

Also: this is the second story TODAY where the administration only admitted that someone had been sent to El Salvador after the media reported that he had been disappeared without a trace www.yahoo.com/news/venezue...

On April 28, join @alissacooper.bsky.social, @annalenhart.bsky.social, @premmtrivedi.bsky.social, and Ramesh Nagarajan 4 a panel discussion of our new paper, “Building the Digital Platform Commission: How to Design a Regulator to Rein In Big Tech.” Register here: www.eventbrite.com/e/designing-...

Did anyone else catch that while Musk said he would "substantially reduce" his involvement in DOGE in May, he expects to continue for the rest of Trump's term?

I think this is correct.

Fordham Law Prof. Olivier Sylvain (@oliviersylvain.bsky.social) breaks down for Tech Policy Press (@techpolicypress.bsky.social) U.S. state laws aimed @ regulating social media. These statutes, he says, can be lumped into 3 categories: content moderation, data protection, & child online safety laws.

"Given the political value of the fake news concept for the first Trump administration, it should come as no surprise that the second Trump administration has figured out how to add some new wrinkles to its assault-on-journalism playbook. Enter 'news distortion.'"

"For as long as the internet's been around, people of color have been more likely than their white counterparts to fall on the wrong side of this divide." Communication is a human right!

Apparently, markets are unhappy with the likelihood that Trump might fire Powell and destroy the independence of the Fed. Because it's not like he ran on this stuff.

I think this misses something. Trump's core supporters are not really suffering. Sure, their 401Ks have gone down and their are nervous about the short term. But they have *faith*. There r good times coming for the believers who will be raptured to Trump Heaven.

An incredible admission as to the the times under Trump. But not that Murkowski says she will keep speaking. Her caveat is that she will focus on being effective, which does not always mean speaking bluntly or speaking truth to power. But talk is one thing. Votes r another.

Given that the Supreme Court 9-0 affirmed the "facilitate" language, this is considerable chutzpah.

Good grief!

As Donald Moynihan observed in his essay on the end of Direct File, “this is a dispiriting moment if you believe in good government, and especially the role of technology in making it better.” It’s the understatement of the year, for me, going back over 15 years of work.

Our new report at @publicknowledge.bsky.social makes the case for an independent regulatory body with broad powers for Big Tech. It’s based on concepts @haroldfeld.bsky.social first articulated in 2019. Think we’re crazy? It would mean Government Efficiency - get it? - and empower Little Tech.

The Supreme Court prohibited even threats of this nature in NRA v. Vulla. www.scotusblog.com/2024/05/supr...

The records show that Palantir is actively working on the technical infrastructure underpinning the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts which could soon impact U.S. citizens. 🔗 www.404media.co/ice-just-pai...

Tax ppl can speak to the statutory and regulatory questions. But as a 1st Amendment person, I can tell you that this is wildly lawless as a constitutional matter. Govt subsidies & exemptions are not free-for-alls to impose viewpoint based restrictions. Plus this is a nesting doll of violations - 1/2

Old enough to remember when the GOP thought the biggest scandal in the world was the Obama admin's IRS reviewing the tax exempt status of some right leaning non-profits.

My employer @publicknowledge.bsky.social has released the latest paper by me and @lisahmacpherson.bsky.social "Designing the Digital Platform Commission" publicknowledge.org/new-public-k... Some basic recommendations on how to build an effective regulator for Big Tech.

🎉 @publicknowledge.bsky.social is happy to announce our newest White Paper, “Building the Digital Platform Commission: How To Design a Regulator To Rein in Big Tech,” from Senior Vice President @haroldfeld.bsky.social and Policy Director @lisahmacpherson.bsky.social.

🚨 Today, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Mark Meador to the Federal Trade Commission, despite President Trump illegally terminating Democratic Commissioners Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and @bedoyaftc.bsky.social in violation of both the statute that created the FTC and Supreme Court precedent.

🚨Mark Meador should not be confirmed until Commissioners @bedoyaftc.bsky.social and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter are fully reinstated. Confirming him now rewards President Trump’s unlawful behavior and jeopardizes the important work of the FTC. We urge the Senate to vote "no" on this nomination.

Humprey's Executor comes 2 SCOTUS.The idea that court will take action on so important a matter on minimal briefing in a crash time frame, when there is no "irreparable harm" to allowing the case to proceed . . . Who am I kidding? It's just a question of whether it's 5-4 or 6-3.

In addition to the horror here ... "... an associate of ..." Watch how they're moving the circle out.

Trump drops the added tariffs on individual countries for 90 days (except China), keeps the baseline increase in across the board tariffs, and Wall St celebrates -- despite the fact that we still now have higher tariffs on everything and the China tariffs are over 100% It's all relative, I guess

Even if one thinks -- as DJT keeps saying -- that the Gilded Age (with the rise of Jim Crow, union busting and no votes 4 women) was America's "golden age," it was open immigration, not tariffs, that made rapid industrialization possible.
