Megill is 89th percentile in Movement Spread, which is wild for a guy who throws nothing but a FA and KC

Did I spend considerable time considering and testing modeling structures that would be more robust to a weird, unicorn pitch with a new tag, or did I just get lucky that the upcoming StuffPro update likes Skenes's splinker now? The world will never know.

Just feels like a good time to note that the ABS 'mid plate plane' and batter height dimensions aren't some new thing they're testing out, it's the result of a few years of testing and trial-and-error.

ICYMI, some code for clustering pitches and calculating movement vs expected. Check it out and- more importantly- check out Nick's Kaggle competition for predicting Ks using arm angle

Students: THIS 👇 is one of the reasons to do the #SMTDataChallenge. A *big* part of analytics success is communicating your awesome ideas to non-quants. The Data Challenge helps you learn how. It’s no accident 20% of ppl who’ve submitted projects have been hired in sports!

We'll soon have many public versions of DDZ. A reminder that Max laid out the methodology pretty well here: dynamic-dead-zone.streamlit.app

Last weekend I went to Fair Park and took some pictures of some enduring Art Deco architecture, and then I wrote about it (and the weirdness of going to the fair when there isn't the fair). witchhazelphoto.beehiiv.com/p/empty-buil...

we're still in the midst of a subscription drive, of a sort, and could use all the help we can get to keep prices right where they are and the value proposition as rewarding as possible. Admittedly the start to 2025 hasn't even matched 2024, so please spread the word far and wide.

Steve makes an excellent point as to how we should define Early/Late. At the moment, I took the easy (wrong?) way out, and set a line parallel to the front of the plate, but individualized to each batter But, I've thought about a line that is more natural in terms of the swing, which is ... 1/2

Today at @baseballprospectus.com : Do projection systems have an easier time with players who have a lot of MLB experience compared to those with a limited body of work?

Correlations between bat speed changes and the BPro dashboard hitter metrics changes. Bat Speed increases are associated with increases in both HRs and whiffs. Also associated with an increase in DRC+, suggesting on average the additional HR are worth it, but tons and tons of individual variation.

Today's reason for a @baseballprospectus.com subscription: The third-time-through-the-order penalty for pitchers is well-established. The cause, though, is not. Is it batter familiarity? Is it pitcher fatigue? @srbrown70.bsky.social has the data.
