Public service blogging at its very best, from @davidallengreen.bsky.social

Last July we elected a new H of C but we hear little of what the new intake is up to - 100s of new Lab, Lib Dem, Greens - m’while Tory, SNP & Plaid MPs continue to impact. Yet our broadcast media obsesses about framing the 2029 GE 4 years out. Sign here now petition.parliament.uk/petitions/71...

Ava-Santina, "We need to be weary of bad faith actors normalising privatising the NHS" #BBCQT "I promise you there is not a politician out there that is not doing it for personal financial gain"

Another interesting fact is that Britain's satellite industry is one of the world's most specialised and is worth more than fishing, steel, and video games put together. And most companies we work with in this sector are in the EU. Not to mention the research reliance and international workforce.

Also, UK publishing is worth £11bn and yet our IP and creative resources are being given away...

Britain's journey back to Europe will be a long one - ask the Political Editor of the BBC! Latest Inside-Out column philipstephens.substack.com/p/britain-ca...

"For about an hour" was, in fact, for seven-and-a-half minutes each, with the UK PM getting the last word, then leading a Q&A session with media. But this is such an excellent example of the mendacious, awful, biased reporting that has been the hallmark of the entire Brexit debate for a decade. ~AA

And you say the MSM isn’t shaping how Farage is seen. This from ipaper.

Because they're terrified of accusations they're betraying Brexit. It's the same in so many areas. They're hiding their successes and yelling about their weaknesses.

The FPA is dismayed by Sir Keir Starmer's press accreditation policy for the EU-UK Summit of Monday 19th May. The vast majority of EU news outlets have been denied access. We have written to @10DowningStreet to urge him to reconsider. @EUdelegationUK, @EU_Commission, @RSF_inter

All this while refusing to call out Brexit as one of the main factors for Britains low growth and the rise in immigration after “Brexit got done.” Which allows Farage to evade his responsibility for the situation he now so happily exploits. This all helps only Reform.

Here is the Sun's pitifully small apology for its lie about benefits tourism - a lie that was accepted as truth by millions and helped deliver Brexit. These lies are perverting our democracy. At a minimum, apologies should be published in the same location and size as the lie.

Reform UK’s plans to obstruct green energy projects in Lincolnshire put at risk almost £1bn in local investment and more than 12,000 jobs, How many people analysed policies before voting for Reform, the party that also voted against worker rights.

An anniversary worth marking. I'm sure we're going to see the very people who have trashed its legacy seek to appropriate WW2 today - so let's remember what was really fought for: peace, a more united Europe, a land fit for heroes (mark 2) and the defeat of fascism.

Sounds like Labour are sprinting to get a US trade deal done before their 19 May EU talks. Key things to watch out for: - Concessions we made? - Hampers our EU talks? - Stops us rejoining the EU? - Leaves us net worse off than before Trump's tariffs? - Stops future Trump tariffs on other sectors?

Hey British media, It’s no surprise that if you give Farage the run of the place, he’ll start winning. Time to do your actual jobs and start interrogating him on his Brexit shitshow, his funding, his Trumpiness, his idiotic manifesto, his real plans for the NHS… instead of drumrolling him into No.10

Still waiting for Farage-mesmerised BBC to devote more than passing sentence to fact that Greens have more councillors than Reform and that Ed Davey's Lib Dems have all bit wiped out the Tories in their traditional shire heartlands....

The gains made by the Lib Dems in the elections barely merit a mention in the Reform dominated news. The progress is real, significant and, unlike Reform, the party takes local government seriously.

✅ GDP boost. ✅ Trade stability. ✅ Shared values. 🇪🇺 All signs point to Europe. 🇺🇸 Yet the UK still pleads for crumbs from a hostile US. The monthly round-up of the government inching towards the fork in the road. @eastangliabylines.co.uk @jennyrhodes42.bsky.social

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a new rule this week that most filmgoers might’ve already assumed was in place: From now on, members of the academy will be required to actually watch all the nominated films in each category they vote in.

"British exports to the EU fell sharply after Brexit and have yet to recover, remaining 11% below their 2019 levels. Astonishingly, 4 out of every 10 British products once stocked on EU shelves have now vanished." @jamesmaccleary.bsky.social MP lays bare the damage Brexit has done. 👇

At least 12 civilians killed and over 90 injured, including 6 children: this is Putin’s “peace record” from last night. Russia alone is blocking #peace in #Ukraine and in Europe. No one wants peace more than the people of Ukraine.

Why do we use 80-year-old metrics to understand today’s economy? In The Measure of Progress, @dianecoyle1859.bsky.social argues that only with a new approach to measurement will we be able to achieve the right kind of growth for the benefit of all.

"The government’s ‘red lines’ are stifling debate" Exactly that.

“ Keir Starmer seems to want to handle Trump’s bullying trade tactics by trying to get him to be nice to Britain... However, it isn’t possible to placate or do deals with people who are deliberately trying to undermine your fundamental core values”

The 28% bill increase that Water Companies received in April was supposed to go on infrastructure. Instead they are adding a zero to their infrastructure 'costs' so it all just goes on more profits. Only Nationalisation will stop the pollution and the theft.

Overseas pressure groups targeting civil society in the UK is something that urgently needs more scrutiny. The National Trust has frequently been campaigned against via a group whose directors and funders are thousands of miles away. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/a...

This is all true but it’s not strong enough. America isn’t ‘indifferent’ to Europe’. It’s actively hostile to liberal democracy. An autocratic Europe would be America’s ally again. This isn’t a battle between America and Europe. This is a battle between liberal democracy and its enemies.

The Trump administration has drafted a memo to Congress outlining its intent to end nearly all federal funding for public media, which includes NPR and PBS, according to a White House official who spoke to NPR.

I wish the Labour govt would just openly admit that UK economic interests are better served by realignment with Europe, rather than timidly rolling out smaller initiatives in the hope no one will notice.

“These demands to remove & restrict books are not the result of any grassroots or popular sentiment…The majority are now originating from well-funded, organised groups and movements…” Sounds familiar to anyone who’s been dragged into UK culture wars too. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/a...

Important research by my colleague @alisonhicks0.bsky.social informing this news article, who interviewed UK-based school librarians facing book-banning challenges. A dissertation student of mine last year uncovered similar trends with a nationwide survey - #librarycensorship is def growing in UK.

Switzerland will be rejoining several EU programmes following an agreement with Brussels. Meanwhile Labour act like a drowning man refusing to grab the available lifeline. www.worldradio.ch/news/bitesiz...

💥 Our research shows deep alignment with the EU on goods and services could offset the impact of Trump's tariffs on the UK economy. Listen to @pimlicat.bsky.social explain more on @lbc.co.uk 👇 www.bestforbritain.org/naomi_smith_...

I see the Times is running with the made up numbers about millionaire relocation from the firm that specialises in millionaire relocation again, then

🚨🚨Unless you forgot, #brexit is still a complete & utter disaster for the UK with just a bottomless pit of misery and pain. Lab position on EU customs arrangement is ludicrous since #brexit given the current economic context makes absolutely no-sense to maintain even for short-term political gains.

Great story - also one reason why I tell students to use apps, and understand how they work as part of security training for journalists….you would think erm others might do this

The government has published no evidence to suggest that cutting disability benefits will get people back to work. The evidence it has published found that these cuts would plunge hundreds of thousands of people into poverty. I’m joining @trusselluk.bsky.social in calling on the gov’t to rethink

Kemi Badenoch blames more pot holes on electric cars Apparently, increasing number of pot holes have nothing to do with the Conservatives cutting annual road maintenance from £4.7 billion in 2010 to £1.6 billion in 2024

Trevor Phillips just said what we’ve danced around for 9 years: A US trade deal means chlorinated chicken, lower food standards & worse trade with the EU. The 2016 ballot paper sold a fantasy - that we could have both. We can’t. EU or US. Only 14% want the latter. #BrexitReality #trevorphillips
