We like to save our food raves for the articles, but our meal at Basil Cafe in Saint Paul last night was so good it qualifies as an emergency. Superb pad Thai - balanced funk / sour / sweet and perfectly cooked chewy noodles, and a heavenly tom kha with a Jupiter-sized citrus kick.

Brief thread about the Union Hmong Kitchen catered "Feast" meal. We sprung for it this past weekend for a rented house gathering of 15 guests, and it ended up at around $95/person, all costs inclusive. For catering/private cheffing, one of the best experiences we've had. 1/2

Minnesota-based writers: we're looking for culinary pitches centered around immigration stories. Connections between restaurants and overseas hometowns, multigenerational evolution of concepts/menus, etc. all of interest. Aiming to commission a couple longer works. [email protected]

A killer edition of the Tulip and Schooner newsletter coming tomorrow at noon: a deep dive with Minnesota distiller Jace Marti about Black Frost Blended Rye and Bourbon, and a deep dive into sake making in at Moto-i in Minneapolis. Subscribe to read it all: heavytable.substack.com

Via Twin Cities Business: Nearly four years after launching the food hall concept in Minneapolis, owner Patty Wall is looking to expand. tcbmag.com/market-at-ma...

A national Yemeni coffee chain Qahwah House is opening in NE Mpls and got review bombed by racist Kyles on Google Maps. People who couldn’t even be bothered to take a picture of the real business when they made the listing to bomb it. Internet, you know what to do. maps.app.goo.gl/kMpNprvBRhD5...

Star Tribune has published a well-reported look at the chilling impact of ICE raids on life and commerce on East Lake Street and beyond. (Illustration from our East Lake Checklist, by WACSO.)

Took a chance at Ono Hawaiian Plates at United Noodles and tried the sesame chicken, a much abused and often mediocre dish. I needn’t have worried - great crispy fry on the chicken, complex, tangy, not oversweet sauce, lots of sesame flavor. This place just doesn’t miss.

Mi Mexico Querido in Longfellow is closed. It’s a bummer; although their menu was unconventional in some ways the hospitality and food were generally on point.

Finally got out to cult favorite Kimchi Tofu House on campus. A few thoughts. 1) The soup hits the table at a rolling boil, which is amazing and I love it. 2) Superb, flavorful beef bulgogi. 3) Pretty sparse banchan but I think the kimchi is the best I’ve had around here.

We hashbrown out the year that was, assess the state of the local restaurant scene, and make bold predictions for what you'll be ingesting during the next 11.5 months.

PARTICULARLY good newsletter tomorrow: an interview with Sean Sherman about his upcoming Indigenous BBQ spot (no pork! no beef! no chicken!), a rave review for Le Burger, and a taste of Turkey at Sofra. Cheers to @jrnorton.bsky.social @jeannelakso.bsky.social @amyrea.bsky.social for the words.

As per a PR email: Chef Sean Sherman has bought the former Seward Co-op Creamery restaurant space and will be opening an indigenous barbecue restaurant and commissary kitchen. Name of the new spot will be NATIFS Wóyute Thipi.

Unparalleled value at the always excellent Dong Yang. The BBQ Beef is $17 but can feed 3-4 people. Love the stone bowl rice too.

I ordered this abbey cake from Jampot after seeing it in the @heavytable.com gift guide and boy does it deliver. It’s basically a very good fruit cake soaked in Bourbon.

Newest Central Avenue Checklist newsletter posted today, featuring the best East African Sport Platter we've tried to date at Hodan, skewered beef heart, a perfect bar, and possibly the worst brisket sandwich in the region. heavytable.substack.com/p/central-av...

Working on this Friday's newsletter, remembering the absolutely killer bananas foster we ate at Lagniappe on East Lake Street in Minneapolis. We'll have some thoughts on leaving X and a dive into the business model of the newly opened La Estancia, too.

We profiled Hi Flora! on our exhaustive tour of Lyndale Avenue eateries last year; sad to see it go. heavytable.com/lyndale-aven...

The team behind the magazine: We've put together a Heavy Table starter pack chock-a-block with writers / editors / artists / generally talented folks. Mostly but not entirely Minnesota-based. Lotta food knowledge in one place. Cheers! go.bsky.app/BQEEyqm

Got out to Kinzo Udon tonight. Initial thoughts: good noodles (chewy and tender), delicious broth (loved the tomato broth, also dug curry and beef broths quite a bit.) Novel service format, which is to say: true to Japan, new to our area.
