#NoKings protest in Topeka, KS today was the biggest one I’ve seen yet there. #thisiswhatdemocracylookslike

I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III. Sound familiar?

Anyone wanting to invade the United States, now’s the time. The military leadership is hyper focused on several people carrying signs in Los Angeles, our tanks are randomly in DC, and our planes have fallen from their carriers into the ocean.

The June photo from @bugeric.bsky.social's and my calendar for this year is this shot of male and female Eastern Collared Lizards taken in Carter County, Missouri last May. #lizards #herpetology #EasternCollaredLizard

Thunderstorm cell in eastern Jefferson County, Kansas this evening. #thunderstorm #kansasstorm

A fun, lucky shot with 3 sizes of Calidris species of sandpipers lined up to show the size differences. Back to front: Pectoral, White-rumped, and Least. Photographed at Loess Bluffs NWR in NW Missouri on 17 May 2025. #birds #birding #shorebirds

Art of the Deal!!

I'm a little late sharing it, but this is the May photograph from @bugeric.bsky.social's and my calendar. This was taken in late May last year in Shannon County, MO. These are 13-year Periodical Cicadas in Brood XIX. #bugs #cicadas

Two of a flock of six female Red-breasted Mergansers (Mergus serrator) appearing to have a little spat at Wyandotte County Lake, Wyandotte County, KS on 26 April 2025. #birds #birding

Get out and nature this weekend!

The April photo from our annual calendar is this one that @bugeric.bsky.social took last spring of a Phidippus princeps in a red bud here in Leavenworth. #spider #jumpingspider

Some photos from today-this is what democracy looks like. #marchfordemocracy #march4democracy #marchfordemocracyKC

Democracy is not a spectator sport. If we don’t speak up, eventually there will be no one left to speak up. #MarchForDemocracy #MarchforDemocracyKC

Well, I ruined my day by doing our taxes and discovering that since we underestimated our income for 2024 when applying for healthcare (which has to be done before the year starts), we owe over $1000. It could be worse, but I really hate sending any money to the government right now. #taxes

Prairie sunset -we headed to the Olathe Prairie Center this evening to hear the American Woodcocks peenting. The bonus was this beautiful sunset. #sunset #PrairieBeauty

If the Supreme Court ultimately agrees with what the gov't is arguing today, that the President has broad Article II powers that would permit it to deport people & there can be no judicial review, then literally no one is safe.

American White Pelicans at Loess Bluffs NWR in NW Missouri today. I love these big pterodactyls. #birds #birding #MObirding

My partner and I joined the protest at the Kansas State Capitol today. #resist #fightfordemocracy #supportveterans

The March photo from the calendar @bugeric.bsky.social and I make for family every year is this awesome shot of a tree cricket singing, which Eric photographed here in Leavenworth, KS. #bugs #insectphotography

Sunset along the Kansas Turnpike this evening. #sunset #KSsunset

Dr. Charles Henry Turner was from Ohio; he earned a BSc and MSc from the University of Cincinnati. He was the first African American to earn a PhD in #entomology, which was at the University of Chicago in 1907. #28DaysOfBlackSTEMHistory #BlackHistoryMonth www.smithsonianmag.com/science-natu...

😕

We've had lots of these American Goldfinches at the feeders during the recent deep freeze, although they're still in their drab winter plumage. This one was photographed last April. #birds #birding

Exactly why I've been writing, podcasting, and damn near screaming about using the right language. The mainstream media is failing us SO badly right now. Stop. Calling. This. Shit. DEI. This is (re)segregation. This is racial purging. Cleansing Black people from positions of power.

Yup

Hundreds of cute little finch and junco tracks all over my snowy patio. #birds

Fluffy borb alert!! Cute little Tufted Titmouse on a cold day makes for a fluffed up little ball of a bird. Almost doesn't look real. #birds #birding

Watching the start of the USA vs Canada game, and I’m so glad to hear my Canadian friends booing my team and during the anthem. Our country f’ing deserves to be booed. #OCanada

A flock of Common Mergansers taking flight earlier this month at Perry Lake in Kansas. #birds #birding

Yes, this!

The caterpillar of a White Furcula moth (Furcula borealis) appears to be looking at its shed skin. Photographed in southern Missouri last September. #bugs #caterpillar

This dapper Swamp Sparrow, which didn't make the cut for our calendar, was photographed at Wyandotte County Lake in eastern Kansas last spring. #birds #birding

Black excellence: Twice as qualified, half as respected, and still passed over or labeled as a ‘DEI hire.’ Black folks have always known this because we’ve seen it happen to our own family members. I know I have.

Dr. Margaret Strickland Collin’s studied termites, and was the first Black woman to earn PhD in entomology. siarchives.si.edu/blog/margare... #BlackHistoryMonth #28DaysOfBlackSTEMHistory

BLACK HISTORY MONTH❤️🖤💚 Tuskegee Airmen in front of their P-40. African American military pilots and airmen who fought in World War II.

New month, new calendar photo-this photo, taken by my partner ( @bugeric.bsky.social ) in our neighborhood this past summer. #urbanwildlife #mammals

Laughed pretty hard at this one

My feeds are full of friends irate about 47's presser about the crash and how he spent most of it blaming Biden, Obama, and DEI, but when I watch #cbseveningnews they don't even mention that. They showed a clip of his first couple sentences. His lack of ability to lead should be front and center.

I'm still seething from all the news today, and I've rage posted on that Meta site, but here I'm going to share another rejected calendar picture. This dapper fellow is a Dickcissel. His name is onomatopoetic. #birds #birding

Another one that missed the cut for our calendar, I just used this photo on my mom's birthday card, so you get to enjoy it, too! This lovely Ozark Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton ozarkae) was one of several photographed on a glade in Carter County, MO last spring. #bugs #butterfly #nature

Another shot that didn't make our calendar this year is this Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Sapsuckers make a series of holes around a tree and then both lick the sap and eat the insects that come to the sap. #birds #birding #ksbirding
